    I really enjoyed this video on citrus preservation. One element about the "bitter" peel is that it is invaluable to maintain a healthy blood sugar, as antidote for borderline diabetics, those having weight issues, "bitter" is the Chinese remedy to balance one's constitution (Prakriti). In Indian Ayurvedic medicine the balancing tastes are hot & Sour (Pitta) remedy for too cool a constitution, bitter (Vata) as antidote for too much sweet (Kapha) like carbohydrates which making one heavier, all of these "tastes" are included in both Chinese remedy and Indian remedy, included in each meal for a balanced constitution. Therefore, one can make a bitter tea from the more bitter inner peel of the citrus as a balancing remedy. Great Video, thank you!!!

    I have an orange tree in my backyard - completely organic. I certainly will try dehydrating the peels for tea - such a great idea! I do make a wonderful kumquat pie from ground kumquat using their peel (the sweetest part) and insides less the seeds mixed with sweetened condiensed milk. It is wonderful so now I think I should dry the peel from those sweet kumquats to use for tea, for flavoring in cakes and cookies and breads. Oh my, you've got mind mind swirling now.

    I make rosehip tea that immitates the taste of mulled wine by adding cinnamon, ginger and cloves, and then a dash of blackberry shrub made with apple cider vinegar for some extra tang and sweetness. The orange peel would really make it complete.
    Firelighters would be a good use for non-organic dehydrated orange peels, and when stored close to the woodstove would make the room smell lovely.
    The pith is worth saving as it contains healthy bioflavenoids.

Organic were just a little too $$ in Pittaburgh area. (And almost unavailable here) I didn't have a dehydrator then, so grated peels without the pith and let sit on a cookie sheet on the deck. Yum!! Hi, as informative as ever, thanks. Orange/Grape Fruit/Lemon skins when burnt to ash have extremely high levels of Potassium (not as high as banana skins but still extremely high). When used as plant fertilizer (at the correct time) the ash will increase flower production which in turn will increase your fruit harvest. When added to potting mix the potassium in the ash will help grow bigger stronger roots. I used to think only phosphorus did this to roots but potassium is also important. Better to burn them outdoors or with a strong extractor fan indoors!

    Love the ideas. We don't have access to what I call good oranges in Western Kentucky except around the holidays and the mediocre oranges are expensive being as you are taking pot luck as to whether they will be fit to eat, so I don't have a lot of peels. I dry mine. I do love a bottle of orange vinegar for cleaning my stove, but I just use as many of the dried peels as I have to in my plain vinegar. I make apple vinegar in 5 gallon buckets, super quick by chopping up whole ground fall ugly apples from wherever I can get them. I set the bucket by the cattle watering trough I use to collect water for my plants and dip out what I need. Remember this is for laundry and floors etc.; no need to be picky. I have done it long enough I can eyeball a little sugar to jump start it and it's off and running. Truly as close to something for nothing as I'll ever get. You have inspired me to make a lemon flavoring. I needed some last night and all I had was a lemon!

    Great video, thanks. I also don't mind the pith on my dehydrated oranges/lemons but when I find a nice big box of large citrus fruits with thick piths...I'll grab the opportunity to process them for the pith, dehydrated and powdered, it makes a really nice natural pectin for jams/jelly. Although I prefer to freeze my zest. I also like to keep dehydrated zest on hand as well as powdered. Something magical happens to a Lemon dish made with rehydrated zest and powder together.

    Hi there. When looking for uses for orange peels, you were my go-to. I see what looks like orange oil in the thumb nail, is that correct? Do you have a video for it? Because I love the scent of citrus, I want to use it as a body oil.
    Also, because I can't fathom adding another electric appliance to my little apartment, I simply put the peels I had in the sun to dehydrate. We're in Texas, and we got some nice warm days last week. I finally remembered to put the peels outside. Now I have some grinding to do.
    Thank you for all the time and work you put in to make your content. You're very much appreciated 🥰

      @RainCountryHomestead  Před 2 lety

      No, it is not orange oil but am pretty sure I explained what it was in the video if you get a change to watch it.
      If you are wanting the vitamin C to stay intact, I do not recommend drying in the sun or at a high heat. I rarely do any on my electric dehydrators but rather on the rack close to my wood stove. They dry quite nicely there and I know I am able to preserve that vitamin C better that way. If I use them in teas though, the C will be lost but more quercetin is released

I wanted to know about what I might be able to do to use orange peels rather than trashing them....I didn't learn anything because it's just overwhelming. It's like I'm drowning 😫

      Some people really appreciate the fact that I give a good many options rather than just doing a video on only one or two. If it is too much, you have a couple of options: pick a slower play back speed and take notes or only pick out one or two things that work best for you and forget the rest. These video take a lot of work and hours of time just putting a single one of them together. Complaining about getting too much information over something that cost you nothing but the time to listen does nothing to help either you or me any more than those I get that complain I am not giving them enough. I am always working on improving my presentation but I will also do what I think is best for the general public. I will NEVER please everyone though, no matter how hard I try and stress myself out over it....

    All of this is really helpful. I'm curious if you've made any creams or salves with orange peels. We recently got a abundance of "Philippino limes" we call them Calamansi. They don't really have any pif. We have only been juicing them but I want to see if I can do more with them. We have over 50lbs and going to pick more next week. I'm curious if you think it would be too acidic for a body butter or nighttime face cream.

    Thanks for more great suggestions. Orange creme pie sounds amazing! I like the orange colored clothing that you are wearing for this video. After watching several of your videos I have a question. With a guess, how many canning jars do you have in total? Thanks again and have a great weekend!

      I made sure to dress to match for this video. I do not get a chance to wear my orange things much! haha!
      I really have no idea how many jars because I add to them every year when people give them away or I score on them at garage sales. I have LONG since lost count but I know I have a lot!

    Thank you Heidi, just subscribed. Your video popped up about orange peels as I have been wanting to keep them, I have frozen lemon zest and juice separately. My question is, I consume an orange or two at a time, not enough to spark up dehydrator so can I keep them somehow till I get enough? I want to make the orange chicken and will add zest to Chelsea buns when I get round to it. Thank you from Perth, Australia, originally from beautiful New Zealand.

      On the rare occasions that happens (usually in the event I am going to use them for vinegar) I simply put mine in a jar in the fridge until I am ready for them

    It's hard to find organic oranges in Mississippi to unless you have your own trees

      Our local store has organic Cara Caras and I love them but they recently just upped the price to $3.49 per pound!

    you know that pkg'd True Lemon or Lime? I'm thinking that if we use these a lot anyway, to dehydrate then grind into a fine power using a coffee grinder. I like to use these powders in my water or teas or where I want more of these flavors.

      Not specifically but I toss expended orange peels from my teas, fermented citrus peel drink or vinegars in the garden.

      This video is a few years old so before I had better camera and lighting but I show how to make a garlic rosemary infused oil as well as the oil I use in my skin cream (though I add more herbs to the one I make now): czcams.com/video/pLNbKoY5v5c/video.html

    Quick question, I am just starting dehydrating. Can you store the orange peels until you get a couple of oranges of peels or do you need to dehydrate the same day? Thanks for all your helpful, informative videos.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  Před 4 lety +5

      Yes, you can just put them in a jar or other sealed container and store in your fridge until you get enough to do what you want with them

    I cannot handle sugar very well. So I don't bake sweets at all really. Any foods that would taste good with dried up orange peels? Rice maybe?
