FILM DESCRIPTION:
James Mangold's Walk the Line tells the life story of country music legend Johnny Cash (Joaquin Phoenix), focusing primarily on the long courtship he had with June Carter (Reese Witherspoon). The film is structured as an extended flashback opening with Cash readying to take the stage at his historic Folsom Prison Concert. The film touches on his childhood, relating a horrific early incident from his life and establishing the troubled relationship he would have with his father (Robert Patrick). Cash joins the military and leaves home. During his time in the armed services he begins writing songs and romances a hometown girl (Ginnifer Goodwin). After the end of his duty he settles down and attempts to begin a music career, but his wife has trouble adjusting to his dreams. Cash auditions for Sam Phillips (Dallas Roberts), signs to Sun Records, and soon finds himself on tour with a roster of young soon-to-be legends that includes Elvis Presley (Tyler Hilton) and Jerry Lee Lewis (Waylon Malloy Payne). On this tour he meets June Carter, the daughter of the famous Carter family, and they take a liking to each other, although she refuses any serious advances from him. Cash gains world-wide fame thanks in part to the inspiration he gets from June, but eventually his marriage crumbles and he develops a serious drug addiction. The film is based on Cash's autobiographies. Phoenix and Witherspoon performed all of their own singing in the movie, just as Sissy Spacek and Beverly D'Angelo did in Coal Miner's Daughter a quarter-century before.

I don't care what anyone says, Joaquin and Reese were magnificent in this movie, the chemistry is amazing and Johnny and June would be proud.
sorry, but I didn't like June Carter. a so-called woman of God who committed adultery and slept with another woman's husband. I don't care what the issue was between Johnny and Viv, he wasnt right to do that to her. he could have left her first. that's just humiliating. I know Viv was a bitch to him, but he could have at least broke off with her first. that's all I'm saying. he loved who he loved, but it still wasn't right. good singer tho..Joaquin did an excellent job singing and portraying him.

@@_nay__ I think the whole movie really gives a different perspective of cheating and what love is. To say she wasn't a woman of faith because she was in a situation that none of us have gone through, and due to the choices she made is ridiculous.
HealthyMix well said, Johnny was a heartfelt man. I can relate to both sides. You can’t pass judgement, plus I am sure June was contrite which is why she held off for so long. No human is without fault. You stated that well.

Fun fact: Joaquin and Reese actually had to go through a school to learn how to sing. And the audience at the “shows” are actually real people watching them preform. So this is actually is a performance and a movie together

Academy winning performance for Joaquin. He should have won for his role in this film. Nobody could have pulled this younger Johnny Cash performance off the way he did.

The last movie I watched with my grandfather as he died from cancer. At this scene he was drugged up but still tapped his toe along with the music. I always think of my grandad when I see this movie, and I will always be grateful for that ❤️

No one can compare to Johnny Cash's voice, but damn Joaquin did as good as job as anyone could. And I think Reese Witherspoon did a much better job than June Carter making this song harmonious.

max baca realistically this will be a very studio processed version of what they sang. You can hear the digital tuning of the vocals. In a real live context it probably wouldn’t sound as perfect as this.

This is my favorite sequence in the film. Johnny and June are falling for each other and neither can nor wants to admit it. It’s a fantastic use of music as commentary upon what’s happening in-scene
This movie was a gift for Joaquin to really show what he was made of ( for his late brother ) and for the late johnny cash as the grestest musical biography ever made. Captures many senses of art through art and music.

This is probably the best biopic film ever made. I love it so much. The singing is so beautiful and his mannerisms of Johnny Cash are on point.

This is the best scene in the movie. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon should have gone on tour as a musical act. Phenomenal singers. I don't like country music, but I love their magical rendition of this song.

1:33 - Watch how Jaoquin's facial expression changes when he sees his wife Vivian noticing how much he and Reese are enjoying each other's company. After the show, Vivian says "Stay away from my kids, June" but had she said all that was on her mind she would have said "I just saw how you've already stolen my husband. I'm not going to let you steal my kids, too."
Edit: Also notice how Johnny’s father looks toward Vivian as if to say, “Do you see what’s going on up there????”
Vivian stated in her biography that June pursued Johnny aggressively. Vivian said that June told her she was going to have Johnny and her kids.
Ding. Ding. Ding. Thank you. I couldn’t agree more. To be honest, Cash was a good supportive husband and loved his wife Vivian, but She became so unsupportive when his career kicked off. When trying to be there for her, she was annoyed and walked away. Right then, that pushed Cash away and encouraged him to be unfaithful.
Cash is still mostly responsible for ruining his marriage, but Vivian has to take some of the blame as well. Can’t deny it.

She had The same kind of interests that he had. Also, June Carter clearly was more supportive of him in his Battle with drugs then maybe his 1st wife? Some stuff we just don't know

I made it to the theater for the matinee just before Walk the Line ended its run. A little early, but I was surprised to find I was the first to sit down, so dead center. Previews start & still just me. Movie starts & still all alone. Nobody else ever showed up. I felt like Elvis renting the entire theater. Literally felt I was standing right behind these two for this song.

From Arthur Flint/Joker to John R. Cash/Johnny Cash and all the other performances in between (Commodus from Gladiator, Freddie Quell of The Master, Theodore from Her, etc) of which he's worked alongside legends with incredible performances of his own. The guy is an absolute beast and master. I believe he will be reflected as one of the greats of our time.

I loved hearing Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon singing together as Johnny and June. I loved this song so much I bought it from iTunes. These two actors really are amazing and the story they portrayed was beautiful
Love the lighting in this scene - Cash and Carter are lit normally in the front, and given a deep red highlight from behind. On stage, it's business as usual for these two professional performers, but internally and kept away from the audience, there is a fire burning between Cash and Carter. I'd even go so far as to call this a love scene between them.

It was actually quite a debate around Joaquin before he played the part if he could pull it off because he is only 5'8" when Johnny was 6'2". A bit of height difference. Although I find his performance in the movie outstanding. Great acting/singing.

20,21-year-old kid wrote this song. Nobody from hibbing Minnesota. Dropped out of college. Made up a story about how he dropped out of high school traveled around America during the circuses and learning from old blues men how to play that dare guitar. Really he hit to take his way to NYC and started playing and coffee houses and would eventually go on the tricked on what he got through at a hospital in New Jersey and play for him. Then the great John Hammond would seem a nightclub and sign him instantly but he would be known as Hammond's folly because his first album didn't go anywhere. That first album was self-titled Bob Dylan. And nobody suck him in the fool after Dylan came out with the one to knock out punch of Freewilling Bob Dylan, a folk album that defined folk music for the next decade or more that conquered the folk scene that contained not only this song but other gems such as Masters of war don't think twice Karina Corrina owing that little diddly that song that really defined a generation blowing in the wind. Yeah Bob Dylan want to know about prize for the picture. If you know this man's discography you really understand why.

Before becoming Joker, he was Johnny Cash. Joaquin Phoenix is an awesome actor.

@@graceclark3481 wasn't June a singer since she was born? In the movie johnny listened to the carter family when he was a little kid and said he wanted to become like june carter cause she was a great singer at age 6 or so. So June sang her whole life.
June could sing but it really wasnent her talent. Her great talent was comedy. Cash adored her and her voice and encouraged her to sing more.

it's so amazing how they preformed in the movie, they were perfect for this. it's also so nice to see how much fun they had making this film. Walk the line is my favorite movie and my love and respect for Joaquin, Reese, Johnny and June has grown so much since this movie, it's so sad knowing i'll never see johnny and june preform live but they are gone and not forgotten. They are legends and rolemodels. And also alot of credits to Joaquin and Reese for doing such an fantastic job
