CLIP DESCRIPTION:
John (Joaquin Phoenix) performs "Cocaine Blues" and gets the prisoners revved up in Folsom Prison.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
James Mangold's Walk the Line tells the life story of country music legend Johnny Cash (Joaquin Phoenix), focusing primarily on the long courtship he had with June Carter (Reese Witherspoon). The film is structured as an extended flashback opening with Cash readying to take the stage at his historic Folsom Prison Concert. The film touches on his childhood, relating a horrific early incident from his life and establishing the troubled relationship he would have with his father (Robert Patrick). Cash joins the military and leaves home. During his time in the armed services he begins writing songs and romances a hometown girl (Ginnifer Goodwin). After the end of his duty he settles down and attempts to begin a music career, but his wife has trouble adjusting to his dreams. Cash auditions for Sam Phillips (Dallas Roberts), signs to Sun Records, and soon finds himself on tour with a roster of young soon-to-be legends that includes Elvis Presley (Tyler Hilton) and Jerry Lee Lewis (Waylon Malloy Payne). On this tour he meets June Carter, the daughter of the famous Carter family, and they take a liking to each other, although she refuses any serious advances from him. Cash gains world-wide fame thanks in part to the inspiration he gets from June, but eventually his marriage crumbles and he develops a serious drug addiction. The film is based on Cash's autobiographies. Phoenix and Witherspoon performed all of their own singing in the movie, just as Sissy Spacek and Beverly D'Angelo did in Coal Miner's Daughter a quarter-century before.

I swear, Joaquin Phoenix can do anything. The fact that he was really singing in this will always blow me away. That's not an easy voice to impersonate.
Not only voice but mannerisms and still be good. Joaquin was excellent.
It was Joaquín singing?! I haven't seen the movie yet, I guess I was too young to be interested when it came out but from the short clips I've seen, the singing is eerily similar to John. I thought it was John singing.
Im happy to be a baratone
@@iamsultana It is Joaquin singing and he won a Grammy for it
I'm gunna be honest it sounds nothing like Johnny Cash... But that doesn't detract from how absolutely amazing phoenix was in this movie and the attempt to sing like him is really impressive. The voice is off but he has the inflection and cadence down perfectly. He really did the best he could do, that anyone could do imo
How he didn't win an Oscar for this performance is beyond me
He did!
Best comedian
Lmao!
Smh many agree with you my friend.
Unreal he didn't win for best actor. One of the best performance I've seen!
+Jarrod Schrunk F'in travesty!!
+Jarrod Schrunk Well Seymour Hoffman in Capote was pretty damn good.
Really thats crazy how he didnt win
+Jarrod Schrunk yea he was very good
The fact that he actually sang for this movie is insane lowkey.
Wait till you see a star is born lol

This should’ve been his FIRST Oscar. He KILLED this role!
FACTS!!! He was robbed
He was amazing in Gladiator, he was deserving of an Oscar then too
He was impeccable in The Master as well, he got robbed multiple times
Agreed! He should’ve won it for this and his performance in Gladiator. I don’t get it
@@vedanshkhanduri352 I agree completely. And now he's played Napoleon in a movie by Ridley Scott - I can't wait to see that one because I love both Ridley Scott's movies and Joaquin's acting. I'm sure he's great in that one too - when I saw some of the stills of him as Napoleon I first had trouble believing it was him.
Fun fact: Joaquin Phoenix was an actor way before he played The Joker.
he’s awesome
He was amazing in Her

@@TBT707 "sis"? Lol I'm not a girl.
I’m glad people are beginning to notice him more after joker
Joaquin Phoenix is a really versatile actor.
The Savior Gladiator, Walk The Line, Her, he's realy awesome
The Master and Inherent Vice, whether you love those films or not his performances were incredible and very unique
Exactly. I remember him from Parenthood with Steve Martin and Rick Moranis, a teenager learning about hormones and sex. Now, this and his brother dying. He's come so far.
Sacrificial Lamb he is the BEST
And the new version of the joker
I swear this is such a testament as to how good Joaquin can act. He got Johnny’s serious eyes perfect. Johnny suffered from dark impulses, he never acted on them, but I think this is what endeared him to prisoners and convicts, in his heart he knew there was very little difference between him and them. I just love Johnny Cash.
Very little difference between them and any of the rest of us, which may be why songs like this resonate with so many people.
The man did illegal drugs every day, he could have easily ended up being a prisoner. To say he never acted on his dark impulses just comes off as wide-eyed. Other than that, torally 👌🏼
@@mattygeno not wide eyed. Many people have done illegal drugs every day for awhile including myself. I'm sure to someone like you we should be locked up for life or executed. Dark impulses of beating or hurting women was what I was referring to, many of his not so popular songs refer to this.
So, mr. deep and insightful, I will attempt to enlighten you, probably a complete waste of time but.......... This world is tough, which means this world is a wonderful place and people are horrible, dishonest, self serving, but very predictable. Despite this predictability some of us need a break or at least the ability turn on the autopilot switch, this in no way earns us the viscous judgment of dishonest hypocrites probably guilty of far far worse crimes against people than a little dust inside of a small baggie.
Sad sad dilemma we find our society in, where evil is rewarded and integrity is crushed into nothing in hopes that it never inconveniences evil again in the future. 👋👀
You're heart gets finally broken in this life when either you see your heroes as human or realize love is simply a product of probability or timing. Best regards.
@@markmartin3152 Oh, god no, I’m a recovering addict myself.
He does not look like Johnny Cash. Horrible portrayals and casting

Probably one of the best biographical movies ever. I think His performance was brilliant. Worthy of an Oscar.
Hefipale Burp Joaquin Phoenix is one of my favorite actors after seeing this movie when I was 6!!

Hefipale Burp no
I know the capitalization of the "H" in "His" is by mistake, but a small part of me thinks that it's a vague reference to "Her"
He was nominated, but he didn't win.
I love Joaquin. He’s a genuine artist. No hollywood theatrics, no publicity stunts. This guy goes radio silent for big stretches, gets into a character on an amazingly deep level, then comes outa f--in nowhere when he’s ready with an outstanding performance, and thats regardless of the movie too. He does good even when the movie is bad.
Publicity stunt? Have you heard of ‘I’m Still Here’? It was such a masterful troll on Hollywood and the reality tv types.
I love how Johnny Cash sang his music for everyone. He was such an amazing man
Amen
The face expressions he makes...they are stunning.

Did you see how he got Johnny's crooked grin down in the middle of the song? This guy's a genius actor. Nobody can sing like Johhny did, but this guy does such a good job.
Johnny Cash did a great job of impersonating Joaquin Phoenix.
It isn't discussed much, but this was one of the greatest movie scenes in the last 30-40 years. Speaks to Joaquin Phoenix's talent also.
Joaquin completely disappears into every character he plays. One of the greatest actors ever!
Baller
I like the scene but that’s pretty arbitrary hahah.
it really is!
When he shifts the guitar and points it like a rifle, there's a split second where he actually looks exactly like Johnny Cash.

I think Johnny Cash did a great job of impersonating Joaquin Phoenix.
“This songs for your warden!” Such a badass
You don’t tell Johnny he cant play provocative music
Stephen Coyle indeed, Johnny was the ultimate rebel cowboy rockstar!
To be honest, thw warden deserved that after trying to dictate what Johnny sang to the prisoners. I just wonder if it really happened like that. My mother read the book and she said the movie wasn't completely accurate.
@@ranaowens5537 even if that dialogue wasn’t accurate I think him singing to prisoners was a middle finger to music at that time because no one had done it
The whole scene is great, from him smashing the glass and Reese Witherspoon’s “God I love that man” look to his facial expressions. He is unbelievably talented.
His performance was truly uncanny. As a kid watching this film I actually thought he was the real Johnny cash.

I love the part at 1:50 where the man is looking like he got so much joy out of hearing the "dressed in black" part. He probably heard the real Cash perform it and it brought back memories
I would like to hope that the man genuinely was just excited and joined in ^^..And that head nod by Phoenix to him was just such a beautiful and genuine moment ^^
I think it was because Johnny nodded at him

Joaquin is no stranger to music and singing... Look up how he was raised.
@@Timothy1987 I think the movie did benefit more with Joaquin singing it instead of just using recordings of Johnny Cash. The main reason is because if they used the recordings of the real Johnny cash, then it would make people ask the question of “Why should I bother staying on these scenes? I can easily listen to Johnny Cash”. Having Joaquin Phoenix sing instead of Johnny Cash works a lot better because it makes the movie more unique.
I hope this made sense!
This one is one of the best scenes ever made in the history of a movie, at least for me. Truly... the performance, singing, the build-up that goes through the entire movie, the guys who were in jail probably for years, having a short time of freedom through experiencing the music...
Johnny Cash was writing gangster rap a loooooong time ago.

Ooh you so cool omg that’s so edgy and funny omg hahaha
My dad interviewed Johnny Cash a few months before this concert, he produced a radio show and interviewed almost all of the performers for a venue named Melody Fair, located in WNY. At this time in his career, Johnny had begun to make his views on the war in Vietnam known, and it wasn't accepted by everyone. When the album came out my dad grabbed the promo copy and sent it to Columbia with a note that "Mr. Cash said that he would be glad to autograph a copy of this." He got the album back with the autograph and a note from Columbia that read, "We were glad to make this request for you, but we were under the impression that you would actually buy the album."
