Hello. The rotary control for the talkback it's not talkback input preamp gain, it's the output level of the talkback circuit after the LMC. The talkback preamp has a fixed gain of +45db. So if you crank up that knob you are not hitting harder the Talkback compressor. Greetings from Argentina.

Thank you brother! I appreciate this, now I can properly add my drums from my daw through the LMC.

@@Kierant2010 yes, I believe he is routing his drum track from his DAW through the talk input, and then back into his DAW or some other recording device. That's how I would do it! Specifically on snare or percussive sounds

@@johnnymandez Hey man, didn't see this initially but im 99% sure he duplicated the track in ableton, and it sending it out seperate outputs from his interface. He's essentially processing it in parallel and sending it back out the master of the SSL SiX! Pretty cool use for breakbeats, and since its in parallel you can really dial in the LMC for the right crunch

well our friend above posted a cool video using the same technique in parallel, seems like I should do a video explaining that process a bit and how to mix the two types of compression into each other :)

There is NO WAY to route the talkback mic to the main bus internally. The TB mic input only gets routed out the foldback outputs. So in this video Paul must be sending the talkback mic out the foldback outputs and then back into the SSL Six thru EXT 1.... Also Paul keeps referring to EXT 1 as an output. EXT 1 does not have an output. EXT 1&2 are for bringing external signals like a phone for example into the SSL Six, it is only an INPUT. Also, the EXT 1&2 switches in the foldback, monitor and master sections are to switch the EXT 1&2 signals into its respective bus. Below is text copied from the SSL Six manual referring to the foldback section.
Three switches intercancel in order of priority from bottom to top are the TALK, EXT 1 and EXT
    2, with the following functions:
-TALK - switches the output of the Talk section to the Foldback Output
    - EXT 1 - switches the External Source 1 input to the Foldback Output
    - EXT 2 - switches the External Source 2 input to the Foldback Output.

Hey thanks so much for this, and you're totally right! I'm gonna do a bit more research over the next few days but I'm quite sure you're correct in that the talkback doesn't go straight to the main bus, but rather it goes through the foldbacks. And yes, I was saying it wrong through the video, those are not EXT 1 or EXT 2 outputs, but rather they are the foldback outputs that corresponds with the EXT source inputs.

You are only ever sending it out the foldback. You can come back in to another channel to mess with the signal though you have a lot of options.

I'm sorry to say, but the "crunshy sound" you hear when you turn up the volume up on the Talkback Mic, is distortion from the console or the interface after the mixer. You need to get your gain staging right. Meters CAN turn red, but they are not supposed to. You should keep the meters around 0dB and only go into the amber lights occationally. You will end up with a much cleaner overall sound. Start out with keeping the faders around 0dB - not channel fader on 5dB and main fader on 5dB - look at the meters ;-)

i love drama personally, it helps give us a better perspective on the whole topic, like how the different preamps sound as well as the actual sound of the compressor. Awesome! Feel free to use the timestamps in the description to skip through the video and avoid the drama!
