I've recently acquired a Portastudio 424 mkII and I've been trying to figure out the best way to use it. Do you typically record onto tape and than play it back to record it into your daw? or just use the machine itself as a pre-amp (which I think your explaining in your video) but not really recording into the machine itself? just running the signal through it but recording into your daw?

Hey, you should experiment with anything you can think of and see what sounds the coolest. one of the best parts of using tape is that you can create effects and tones that are way harder if not impossible to create on your DAW, which can inspire you or help you make your music sound different than what may be out there. I like to record entire songs back onto tape, or specific stems and then record them back into my computer. Kinda like mixing them on tape and then send it back to the DAW to finish the song!

I've got an MPC One and it simulates vintage tube based equipment or lofi amps or low-sample-rate harmonics etc AMAZING. you could probably get a good sound out of one of those but the pure variety and quality offered by software fx is hard to beat.
I've made drum tracks that sound 100% like they came out of an old drum machine
you just got to find the right combinations
unless you're rich and can waste money on random used vintage stuff, and like spending hours wiring stuff up just to make small variations in sounds

MPCs are a really classic sound and many producers need that device to get their beats to sound exactly how they want! testament to how important tools are for our creative process!
