  • We caught up with Aaron Gwin at the Tennessee National downhill mountain bike race to discuss the new Intense prototype DH bike he and the IFR team just started running. It's a high-pivot alloy suspension design with 29-inch front wheel and 27.5-inch rear. Aaron talks about the past few years and his struggles with the previous prototype and how they came to develop this new bike. At this point, he was not discussing specifics about suspension kinematics or geometry. #MTB #DH #downhill

    Wish they would get a gearbox on a bike like this these days. Like the new Effigear Mimic 9-speed. Looking at the shock position and mounting points it looks like it would work where you could actually match up the bottom shock mount and the bolt spacing of the gearbox and worst case they make custom plates for the frame to allow that.
    You can used a fixed and centred rear hub which means better and stronger wheels also.

    Windrock eh? I knew it as soon as I saw the opening clip of AAron riding the rock hip. Great in depth view of what was going on. Maybe because they trust the engineers who designed the bike? I'm not sure. But after talking to a lot of people they rarely blame the equipment, they always blame themselves first. This video makes me wonder about my own equipment but I've been making some changes that have made me more confident in my riding. I've never felt right in with the cockpit I had set up. I finally got bars and grips that work and feel right to me, now maybe just the stem length needs to be increased because I still feel cramped. I had to change pedals too because I didnt feel planted, now I do. I've been looking at Intense, but I never really considered them because of cost. Just outside of my budget and its more of a dream bike for me. I love the design and the look of the bikes. Some of the most gorgeous bikes out there.

    That setup looks like it would be fighting itself with compression forces. Like almost to the point where it would almost want to extend the shock initially or put the forces through the bearings and seat stay instead of the shock. yeah, I thought the same when I saw that bike. Maybe it acts differently because of the high pivot but just looking at it seems like the linkage pivot should be higher up on the seat tube so it doesnt bind. So many pre season videos and training tips etc, lets hope the results are going to come. To me a great rider never blames his bike. All bikes take some getting used to... The fast frenchies have really upped the pace the last couple of years and even the greats such as Minnaar are struggling to keep up the pace consistently. But all the best for the seaso, would be good to see you at the sharp end of things again.

    • @dylan-5287
      @dylan-5287 Před 2 lety

      Definitely agreed with the idea of not blaming the bike. People these days are always looking for the slightest marginal gains, paying $1000 thinking the next upgrade will change everything. In blind tests, I don't think most could even tell differences between many things. But with a pro at Aaron's level I do think he can tell. It may not even be anything wrong with the bike. But if the m29 coincided with other bad things, he may have lost his confidence with that platform. Once you lose your confidence on something it can really mess with your head and pushing it doesn't really help. I think it's a smart approach with just starting fresh with something new. Maybe in the future he goes back to the old bike and suddenly finds its working great. Sometimes it's worth just moving on.

      Correct. I enjoy more riding my bike rather than racing and putting pressure to myself every time i compete.

      @@dylan-5287 each case is different..Greg is still winning, Aaron, not so much. Now apparently it's the bike that was slow... I mean, couldn't they have found that out by having him ride bikes from other brands for starters instead of waiting years to make this discovery? He should have a few YTs left from those days to instantly tell if the times are off due to the bike and not himself as a rider.
      Also, crashes can change how a person rides. It varies from person to person but in F1 Nelson Piquet himself said after his crash he couldn't judge braking points as well and lost speed.

      @@airhogglider definitely agree with what you're saying here. I think everyone has had a crash that took their confidence away. I usually feel off for at least a week or so, but I've seen guys who never get it back. From the video, it sounds like testing other bikes is exactly what they did. I think a horst link design vs dual link could definitely help him out. Sometimes you just need to start with something fresh. I could see how Intense and Jeff were probably telling him to stick with it and keep trying with the m29. I've got to imagine as a brand, completely changing away from a suspension design you worked hard on is a tough pill to swallow for one's pride. I wouldn't be surprised if Aaron gave them an ultimatum that either they try something fresh or he needs to go somewhere else. Fingers crossed!

      @@dylan-5287 especially if things break like someone's leg (ie Anderson Silva). Gwin's ex team mate went privateer and made his own frame. There's not an infinite runway to race and as a person gets closer to 40 or beyond in any sport they need to think or have planned for retirement. You see this in F1 as well where the field has plenty of ex-Champions in crappier cars and not being on the podium anymore for seasons like Better or Alonso. Kimi retired. After a while, it's just a job and a paycheck. Max Verstappen is the defending Champion but he has no chance this year against Ferrari and he's got what he came here to get so he's content. Regardless, it's a good paying job. Hope Gwin got paid well for his contributions to Intense regardless of how it turns out in terms of results.

      @@airhogglider he's definitely getting paid well but I'm sure it's less these days. From an article two or maybe three years ago, gwin was making over a million a year. Absolutely insane compared to how little most racers are making. I think that was mostly redbull though. I think he'd like to get at least a few more podium results or gold before he considers retiring. He seems to still have that drive. But you've got guys like gee Atherton or Brandon fairclough who still get out and consistently race even knowing they're pretty unlikely to win. Just out there having fun at this point. Biggest thing is staying away from life changing injuries.
