The Barge Slip Build | River Road - Part 1

- This is a comprehensive series covering an HO Scale (Prototype) Build of the SRY Annacis Island Barge Slip in New Westminster, B.C , Canada. It is one of several services this short line railroad provides in the railway industry.
How do you decide between using wood vs. styrene for modeling? Is it because the concrete under the roadbed is structural vs. the steel platform is a model?
You are very observant and attentive, and have asked two very important questions. Your second question hits the mark. You have to decide several things: 1). What is structural? - as you indicated. 2). What constitutes the model? - as you also indicated. Both these questions have different answers as they pertain to each individual (problem) in the style they develop, while thinking through the process in how to model a particular structure. In this case, as you will see later on, all the visible "steel girder" work, ties, etc. won't really be structural but rather a "façade" over top of the structural. I think you nailed it really. It's up to the person to do it in such a way they feel works best for them at the end of the day. Cheers ~ Boomer.

You spoke about using styrene scraps. I make styrene putty out of my scraps. The small little bits that can't be used for anything I put in an air tight jar and add my gluing liquid which is M.E.K. It dissolves the styrene and you can make it as thin or thick as you want by the ratio of styrene to solvent you add to the jar. I've got some small paint jars that I bought from the art supply store that I mix and store it in. You can use it to fill in cracks in corners of plastic kits to keep light from escaping, you can use it as your glue, you can make tiny HO scale weld beads on highly detailed models, even use it as castings material. All kinds of uses. It hardens and is just like the styrene you started with so you can sand it, cut it, and paint it. Didn't know if you have ever done this and when you spoke about scrapes it came to mind.
Yes! Thank You for bringing up this important feature concerning plastic scrap. I just never thought anyone would really care to be honest, you are absolutely correct. Clearly you are experienced, as well, with this material if you know that. I have a bottle of Plastruct (same principle) which is like a thick "Goop" for filling in the voids etc. Thank You again William, for bringing this to the attention of the community. Cheers.

As modelers we must also have a bottle of "Goop" on the bench as well . . .
The burn marks on your maple is likely caused by a slight misalignment of your fence versus your blade (it's pinching). Tablesaw bearings are robust and unless they are seriously abused should have little runout. Also keep your blade clean. A buildup of pitch on the edges of the teeth can also cause burning. I completely agree with your recommendation of using maple for the reasons you stated. I'm really enjoying this series; your attention to details and painting puts your modeling into the contest category IMO. I'm 80 and too old to start a layout but I can enjoy watching you build yours.

There are no hobby shops within a 45 minute drive here in central NJ and no train stores within 1.5 hrs. Difficult for model train lovers.

Thank You. I was surprised how good the cut came out as well. I used a special "Glue Joint Ripper" blade as well. It was an expensive "Freud" blade I had left over from my cabinet making career. It was also painful to change it over (my saw arbor is a little stripped), but well worth the effort in the end. Cheers.

Thank You. I keep my Styrene in a box and go through the dreaded search pattern like most when I need something. This way I get to know my inventory well . . . lol. Great video, got me thinking about to use fixtures. I like also to use maple for my bridge support, I’ve never use maple before, could you you give a little details about the blade I need purchase before I get started to build the support, thanks for the guidance on creating the detAils item to make the layout.
Thank You John. I'm a believer of buying the best quality blade once. Furthermore, you can have them sharpened as well down the road. Two blades are needed for most purposes: A Ripper and a Combination (for cross-cutting). Get the best quality "Ripper" blade you can afford for ripping solid Maple board. I like Freud Blades myself and I buy the best. Don't lend them out and they will last 30 years. Cheers ~ Boomer.

Thank You. I use maple as you indicated. Use the best quality blade you can afford with maple and a good solid "push stick." It's hard wood and tight for grain, but boy is it ever nice to build structures and models like this with. It also has excellent glueing properties as well. Cheers.

Sorry my friend, my finger is sore from clicking through all the "post-production" hours of endless edits with six hours of sleep and no time to model. Furthermore, I also have a day job and family as well. I don't choose when ads play. Besides, it's the only way I get "one dollar" for my hard work. e.g. two hours of modelling, then fourteen hours of editing, then one dollar an hour after CZcams and the IRS take their cut - if you watch a full ad . . . I get nothing when you skip it. Do you see the madness now? If you grow tired of clicking "Skip Ads" and I grow tired of clicking my finger through endless editing in pre and post production, the channel dies and I move on - Cheers ~ Boomer.

Content creators make it free not ads form my perspective. Clearly, you are the consumer, I am the content creator. It seems free to you but in realty nothing is free. Someone pays for it in labor or exchange (economics 101). Therefore, how could you know about it (not everyone does clearly), since AdSense (Google) pays, not CZcams. CZcams doesn't pay anyone, when you watch the ad past five seconds the content creators gets a few pennies as my hair turns grey anyway. as you think you watch it for free. Cheers.
