    At Worlds 2017, all eyes were on SK Telecom T1.
    Led by Faker, the defending world champions had a lot to prove after a shaky season, and to make it out of their group, they'd have to take down EDward Gaming, one of China's best teams.
    Not even 30 minutes in to the game, SKT were on the ropes. Down 9-0 in kills, with seven towers gone, two dragons given over to EDG and an almost 10,000 gold lead hanging over their heads, it looked like SKT had no hope of winning the game.
    SKT's options were narrowing by the second.
    Until EDG made one mistake, and SKT pulled off an impossible play that started off the greatest comeback in League history.
    Let's break down Faker's Shockwave, second by second.

    Wolf’s grand entrance was the biggest highlight of that play. Faker had a fantastic shockwave, but it was kinda already lined up perfectly for him after Wolf’s grand entrance.

      Reminds me of the KT play also. KT up 10k and just got first baron, wolf moves nami just out of vision and ults, faker and huni follow it up but faker gets the hype cast. Supports rarely get the shoutouts.

    • @merlinnusthehawk
      @merlinnusthehawk Před 2 lety +110

      I feel like the flash silence by huni was the actual play there. Obviously wolf shot called it and made the initial engage, but it would not have meant anything without huni silence which allowed time for faker to run into position for the shockwave.

      every set up means nothing without damage to finish the targets. imagine if faker's oriana hit like wet noodles. those knock ups and those charms will mean nothing. they would have just regrouped and go for a counter engage. wolf's engage was great, but never discredit faker's damage output.

      So it’s like they said in the video; if any part of that combo was missing the play would’ve been a dud.

    • @edza7531
      @edza7531 Před 2 lety +48

      It didn't really matter who's play it is, If Wolf didn't engage the play wouldn't have happened, Huni's silence kept EDG in check so without that a counterplay could've been possible and without Faker's shockwave, T1 wouldn't get the amount of damage to finish off EDG. Every part of that wombo combo so as stated in the video.

      Sorry I'm not familiar with LoL but I do play a lot of DotA. Is the blue team out of position by today's standards? It looks like they all got caught by big teamfight ults because they were standing together.

    • @NielArmstrength
      @NielArmstrength Před 2 lety +25

      They were caught out because they were trying to go for an objective at the bottom side of the map. Since they were already 10k gold ahead, they were confident they could win. They also didn’t have vision of the enemies at the top side of the map. Thus, the blue team was caught off guard by the sudden engage of the red team.

      @shinjimirou928 Před 2 lety +13

      @@InstalockLoL Yeah sadly it was really all on Faker's shoulders to carry most of the time during 2017. That's why the meta against SKT 2017 was hard camp Faker or focus down Faker in teamfights because often the SKT at the time panicked when he was already taken down and hesitate to retaliate or regain composure to resist.
      The Malzahar spam by crown was a planned strategy to shutdown Faker. Malzahar at the time wasn't really the top tier meta pick but it had one purpose, target one carry. By sacrificing your mobility, efficiency and burst damage to roam around the map. They decided to capitalize on the effectiveness of how the Malzahar can shutdown one carry by constantly making follow ups on that ulti or silence.
      We knew at the time botlane was struggling, toplane was neutralized, jungle was neutralized if they cant properly play around Faker.
      The problem at the time there werent enough bans to get the malzahar. Faker wont play Malzahar on pro play finals, it's a major problem but they believed that the other signature meta champions of SSG were more important to ban.
      SSG just simply had superior team coordination than SKT's One carry reliance at the time.

      @@shinjimirou928 Very true. I have been a long time Faker fan and you cannot imagine how angry I was at the Malzahar cancel SSG did 3 games in a row, in fact even to this day I'm still somewhat angry at Crown for that lol. Honestly respect to Crown for knowing his limits and sacrificing his ego for his team and also doing what he's supposed to on Malzahar, but I still feel bad for Faker and I got really annoyed at the time when some people tried to drive the narrative that Faker was no better than Crown since he couldn't do anything against Crown's Malzahar. 2017 SKT was really just a sinking ship that was miraculously dragged to the finals by Faker's godlike performances: Huni had flashes of brilliance but was volatile and either carried or fed, Peanut was getting out jungled often and a shadow of the great jungler that he was the season before going to SKT, Bang was quite literally inting his face off, Wolf also suffered because of Bang's underformances and SKT bot always lost lane; with a lesser mid laner they would have lost to Misfits in quarter finals. I'm sure everyone remembers semi finals where Faker picked Galio 5 games in a row against RNG and made the champion look like the most op character in the entire game doing literally everything to pull out a 3-2 victory, people even started memes about RNG ptsd banning Galio every game. Unfortunately SSG was possibly the best team at the time in terms of team play and also simply outclassed SKT in individual matchups outside of mid. Faker's 2017 SKT worlds run was probably the most dramatic LoL worlds story ever, even ending with the greatest player the game had ever seen breaking down in tears in the end and the crowd chanting his name. In many ways it is really a perfect parallel to Lebron Jame's Cleveland Cavaliers' NBA playoffs run in 2018, with an even more dramatic finals ending.

      I can't deny this wouldn't be possible without the three of them though. I still think most credits go to Wolf for the shotcall. If I had to give credit to the three of them, Wolf had the hardest execution, Huni's flash into W took the biggest balls and Faker had the most pressure to finish the play off.
