Seven Nation Army has one of the most recognizable riffs of all time. Itâs melody has become a global sports anthem. And while it might sound like itâs played on a bass guitar that sound is created by Jack White's semi-acoustic guitar brought down an octave by a guitar pedal. The band never used a bass guitar until the album that followed. And that had to do in part with the bandâs obsession with the number three.
- They only ever used three colours on their album covers, promotional materials and on stage.
- Their third album was recorded in three days
- Jack White likes to throw the number onto the end of his name.
- His record label is Third Man Records
- He wrote a song for Loretta Lynn that was exactly 3 minutes and 33 seconds longâŠ
Alright I might be stretching it with that last one. But where The Stripeâs rule of three was most evident was in their sound. Since they played as a two-piece on stage, aside from vocals, each of them could only play one instrument at a time. The group would add more elements to their minimalist composition over time, but always came back to rockâs three main ingredients of:
Guitar, drums and vocals.
They found liberation in limiting themselves. It forced them to be creative with a small tool kit. And there is a quality in that simplicity. Seven Nation Army has become timeless. There are more people who know the tune than those who even know itâs authors. Making Seven Nation Army The Last Great American Folk Song.

Exactly. Some of the best drummers in the world could be considered "primitive" drummers because of their minimalist style: Ringo Starr, Dave Grohl (in Nirvana days), etc. All of them were perfect for the bands they were in, and ego-fuelled drum fills wouldn't have worked with the sound each band was aiming for.
Her movements aren't smooth and she looks a little awkward, so i can see why people might call her style 'primitive', but it works for what she's doing....
You might even say..... that she's marching to the beat of her own drum
You must be rhythm-challenged.

Honestly, Jack White is a music genius and one of the best guitar players out there
I agree.

Meg White's drumming style is primitive, but that's not always a bad thing. White Stripes would not be White Stripes without that distinct sound.
morphman86 agreed. Itâs part of the attraction
Rock on!!!!!!!
I think you have distinctive and unique stuff like this in many bands. Take Tom Delonge's poor singing for example in Blink 182
Yep! Exactly. It's the same way many Beatles fans (and the band) felt toward Ringo Starr. Was he the best drummer? Of course not. But he was definitely the best Beatle.
+Forlorn Skies Ringo is one of the very best drummers alive. He plays what is right for that song, no more, no less.
Meg is so underrated. It's easy to talk shit about her drumming, but if you watch a live show of theirs, the two are so in sync and her sense of improvisation is incredible. Such a valuable band member.
Agreed sheâs great
Most overrated band ever.
Letâs just say I would take Lars Ulrich a million times over her
No no no. She is hot garbage. I will not let her shitty drumming be confused with ârawâ or some bs term. Her tempo and lack of independence is so bad that it pulls me out of songs.
Iâm not a guy who requires all songs to have perfect tempo and be in complex time signatures with tons of flash. Iâm aware that quantization and DAWâs killed rock. I know that some slack and feel is what makes rock, rock. But you still have to have some competence on the drum set. She lacked any form of dynamic control and ability to flow with Jackâs vocals and guitars.
There are 8 million other drummers that could have played with a heavier less technically focused style that would complement Jackâs vocals and guitar better.
Trying to listen to Ball and Biscuit is genuinely painful. Listening to her rush and drag every other measure on a blues riff makes me want to ram my head into a wall. She sucks.

As a Belgian, I didn't know we popularised the song in stadiums ! Also, before knowing the title I always knew it as "pooo polo po po pooo pooo", that's the "unofficial" title for French speakers basically.
As a Belgian I can confirm that seven nation army is one of the most famous song here. People sing it everywhere.

Can you confirm how to pronounce Club Brugge cause I've heard like three different pronunciations and I don't know what one is right
Belgium is not even a country but nice taste of music you have.
@@tylersteinberg6468 It has two different pronounciations. A flemish/dutch way and a french way.
It's difficult to explain because the dutch 'g' isn't used in the english language.
And I don't know the french way.
@@tylersteinberg6468 as a true brugge fan I can confirm that the guy in the vid mispronounces it.
And besides a flemish/Dutch and a French way, there's even a west-flemish way with the stress even more on the g (that how you can spot the true inhabitants and supporters of brugge)
To say meg white is a bad drummer is kind of just missing the point of the white stripes and the genius of the sound.
Lars again isnt the greatest drummer of all time but his style and skill (regardless of level) compliments metallica nicely which is why they got so big. Bands rarely if at all make it to the big leagues off the back of one member each one has to bring something to the table. RHCP for example, Flea on Bass one of the best bassists of all time arguably but wouldn't probably have gone as a far without the super star talent that makes up the rest of the band.
It's not about are they they best drummer. It's about are they the best drummer for what they're trying to achieve. Lars Ulrich and Meg White fit that role perfectly.
@@KantFromEC Lars has probably been covered up by a backing track for the last 15 years, don't kid yourself
When people say she's a bad drummer, they don't mean that she can't do complex beats or can't hit fast. When people say she's a bad drummer it's because she can't keep time, she can't maintain a steady beat.
Yeah! Sure Meg has bad technique, timing and has similar tense playing style as a newbie drummer but I still respect her! She picked the drums up and managed to write a tune with her limited playing ability that got world famous!
Another example of Jack's love for the number three, in the song he plays in the video, "Ball and Biscuit" Jack sings, "It's quite possible I'm your THIRD man" Just something I noticed
Spent a whole night in a train to Sicily from Salerno Italy and had to listen to that "chant" ALL NIGHT
As long as her drumming is good, why give her slack for it? I really love the chemistry between the two. I love how much this song took off and how itâs a song that doesnât have to be complicated to be intimidating and powerful.
her drumming being bad is what makes the song sound 'alternative' or 'real'. Every time music gets too polished and manufactured sounding like glam rock, people playing badly with originality, like the punk movement, become popular.
The reason people were giving slack for it wasn't because the music was bad it was because she was going about it all wrong. First of all she was right handed and was trying to play the set like a righty. Second of all she holding sticks with clenched fists which not only will kill the palm of your hand it will also make the drum sound terrible because her clenched fist s prevents her from getting the proper rebound out of the drums. Also when she hits the drums she tends to use her whole arm to do it, which not only terrible for endurance but also terrible for power, articulation and rhythmic precision. When your hitting the drum all the power comes from the wrist, the arms are just the guides. Another thing to note is that when she grips her sticks she always grips it by the bottoms, near the butts of the sticks. You are never supposed to do that because its a fantastic way for you loose your sticks while your playing.
Yet despite all that she managed to pull it all off and with a bit of guidance and maybe a couple drum lessons I could see her growing into an incredibly talented drummer.
Yeah some times simple is all you need. I'm not the best drummer but I'm alright, pretty confident I could play this song. I'm a female drummer & in a band w/my guitarist for many yrs. The White Stripes have made me feel like itz ok to be a 2 piece band.
âGiving someone some slackâ is another way of saying youâre taking it easy on them. The exact opposite of how youâre using it.
Youâre thinking of âgiving someone some flakâ.
But Iâm not going to give you flak about it. Iâll cut you some slack.

@GREEN GHOST She plays very similarly to Lars Ulrich, the only difference is that Metallica is a band that needs a better drummer. She plays in a way that could cause severe muscle and bone damage, but she doesn't play enough notes for that to be a legitimate concern. If Carter Beauford played with his wrists constantly stressed like she does he would have been forced into retirement by arthritis years ago, she doesn't play with the speed, velocity, or aggression that he plays with, so she likely won't have that problem. She's not good, but she doesn't need to be, because white stripes doesn't need a good drummer. There are so many amazing women drumming out there, she just isn't one of them, same as there being amazing men drumming and Lars not being one of them.

Grand Wazoo agreed. Her perfect imperfections give it a garage band sound
You laid this out like a Red carpet, doc.. excellent job!
This channel is the freaking best, disappointed it took me this long to find it

even if Meg's drumming is indeed primitive, she had the great opportunity to not only get to record albums but to tour the whole globe. Kudos to her

Certain things will always give me goosebumps, and hearing an entire crowd chanting this song is on the top of that list. It never fails
Well written and good points are made!
Here in Brazil, is pretty common to sing repeatedly "eu nĂŁo vou embora" with the chords of Seven Nation Army. Translated, it means "I'm not going to leave", people sing this usually at the end of a game, a show or just something that is too good to end
(considering that soccer is a big thing here, these chords being so known is not a surprise)
I love Megs drumming. Basic doesn't mean bad. Complexity doesn't always make things better. Her style is straightforward and that's exactly the sound they were going for. Just simple, old fashioned rock. No protools and a bunch of technical stuff. They had that garage band vibe which i love and the simplicity is a huge and fun inspiration to me and many others. It's like going to someones house and watching a couple people fuck around and just have fun.. and they brought that feel to their albums and the stage.
I looooved her during that slow and lumbering sounds amazing
I have straight up had a marathon of your videos today dude

This video is the most accurate report on how the song became a stadium anthem. Moreover, it became the most sang song for AS Roma fans that year, who also made a stadium choreography with its musical notes. It was then AS Roma fans to bring it to 2006 World Cup and let it be the anthem for the Italian National team.
Actually during the celebration in Rome, Marco Materazzi took the mike ans sang: "Siamo i campioni del mondo" on those notes ;-) Rome said, hey we like it and we know how t properly sing it, so they turned it into a chant.
absolutely legend
this song has been stuck in my head for weeks now
