  • Although not commonly found on modern motorcycles, many bikes riding around the street and trails today are utilizing a drum brake setup. Drum brakes often get a bad rap compared to more modern disc brakes, but good performance can still be achieved with regular maintenance and some simple tips and tricks. In this video, Charles goes over some of the most common issues and maintenance jobs you can perform to help you get the most performance out of your drum brakes.

Almost saved myself from hitting another KTM Duke 250 from behind while going to commuting to office on Yamaha RX135 2stroke. Weather was slightly rainly.
I grabbed the brakes as hard as I could.
But, front brake was non existent.
Have to inspect them now. Or might upgrade to Disc.

You can rub valve lapping compound inside the drum and jack the wheel up and set it on a electric treadmill then apply the front brake and put a rubber band around the lever and grip. turn the treadmill on and let it ride for awhile then check. It will take out a high spot in the drum and remove deep grooves

my front drum on my 77' IT250 was giving me lots of trouble, cable didnt fit (to long) even though it said it was an exact fit, later found out my front drum brake (not the hub) is from a yz250 it fits the same hub but it uses a double leading shoe vs the single on the IT, clock the armatures down a bit and it works great not

I have drum brakes on my bike, but the front brake snatches disturbingly. I have done all of the servicing that you describe here, but wonder if the age of the shoes is an issue.

I did everything and front brake performance in my splendor plus is still poor.. there is no initial bite at all, however when I press harder, it got good stopping power.. but because there is not enough initial bite, it ruins my confidence..😅..
Here in india in lower cc segment drum brakes are still common.. In most bikes the drum brakes are good enough. but in my bike I don't know what's the problem.. 😢..

You'll probably want to hear a bit of drag on your drum or you'll have a ton of pedal travel to get the bike to stop.

Yes, but only a minimal shhh sound should be heard. My 80s Yamaha has only one adjust bolt and ask for small resistance.

Do not spray brake cleaner on brake shoe, it will absorb it and ruin your shoes
