In the biggest slum in Manila called Tondo, over 1 million people are living in a space that is less than 2 square kilometers. And inside of Tondo, you will find a lovely lady named Evelyn who serves freshly made "pag pag" from the confines of her own home. Pag pag is the Tagalog slang for 'leftover food' from restaurants such as McDonald's and Jollibee, where the scraps have been taken from garbage sites around town and brought to Tondo to be recooked into unique dishes, and sold on the streets. Evelyn has been dumpster diving and cooking pag pag for over 1 year, and I was really curious to learn more about it, so I went deep into the slum to meet her and tell you her full story. As sad as it may seem from the outside, you will soon learn that this is a success story -- Evelyn makes more money than her friends working corporate jobs, and she has sent all of her kids to college from her pag pag earnings
Most of you guys already know that the Philippines is my absolute favorite country in the world. I have traveled here more than 60 times, and while 99% of my videos in the Philippines have been positive over the years, I strongly felt the need to tell this story which may come off as controversial. I made this story because I feel that poverty in the Philippines shouldn't go unnoticed, as nearly 4 million people in Manila are living in them. Evelyn is as sweet as can be, and I think many of you will find her story to be uplifting and motivational. I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments down below - whether positive or negative :)

The Philippines is my favorite country in the world and this is the first story I’ve told here that is somewhat controversial. But I felt the need to tell it because it is real life on the streets of Manila. Evelyn is an amazing person and this is very much a success story about her life. I loved in Manila for work for 4yrs and they are some of the most happiest people you will ever meet. It's not there fault as when you hotva certain age it's almost impossible to find work so this doesn't help the situation. Maybe you should leave America travel and leave your comfort zone it's one of the perks I get with traveling for work seeing all over the world and eating amazing people.

For me I was struggling in Australia but got an opportunity to work in Asia 10yrs ago and my life is now good I travel Asia Pacific, Europe and soon America doing training. Never give up and try your best you just never know what's around the corner

This kind woman, feeling broken, damaged, rejected and discarded, much like the scraps she repurposes, bruised by the actions of someone she had once trusted and loved, saw an opportunity to give back to her community and in the process, supported her family, found purpose and healed.. ❤❤❤ i LOVE this!

@barisi saro As you can see, we have a lot of restaurants around the world but they do not give their leftover food to people. Not only that you teach them to be lazy, in case something happens to them they will be the responsibility of that restaurant for any hospital bills.
I know that some Filipinos might find this featured story insensitive but for me it's an eye opener with a great lesson to learn from. A lot of people in those areas are suffering from poverty and is food insecure and Pagpag is their only way out to fill up those hungry stomachs. Hoping and praying that someday, these people will no longer resort to eating pagpag, that it will only be a memory for the kids when they grow up. Kudos Drew for featuring the other side of the Philippines.

And I think he has to somehow make money off it? If not how can he continue to do these videos? Hopefully he pays them well, but from our perspective/position, we can’t really be a moral knight and demand that he treat these people right when we aren’t even doing anything, just sitting on our asses, watching the video and complaining 💀💀 like some ppl cough

We have so many people on YT making videos showing them dumpster diving or getting food from restaurant garbage here in the states. It's pathetic that it has come to this, but so much food is thrown out.

I've lived in the United States most of my life. I have seen homeless people eating leftovers after people leave their tables in restaurants like Mcdonald's and even directly from the trash. Dumpster diving is also very common here in the U.S. Pagpag is probably cleaner since it's been cleaned and recooked. The story is sad and inspiring at the same time.
The only problem is Segregation. I watched Dumpster divers in the US and the garbage there is not the same in the Philippines. It was organized unlike in the Philippines. You don't know how nasty it is when poop and food is in the same garbage
I once watched CZcamsr who is traveling on the cheap. He ran out of money and went to dumpster in New York in the center near good grocery shop. Food was good and packaged. You clearly can eat it. He also met immigrant from Russia or Ukraine near dumpster. They talked about charities.

I’ve actually gone dumpster diving in the US with a poor family in Appalachia. It was behind a small grocery. We found still frozen foods in packages set to expire at midnight, foods still cool with same sell by dates. There were also edible fruits, vegetables, slightly bruised or a bit overripe, perfectly fine with washing and cooking. There were a few items like canned stuff or boxed foods, expired but recently. We took nothing that was obviously gone off or canned goods with huge dents or swollen. It really made me think because this was the USA in the mid-1980’s, not a slum in the Philippines! I did eat the food because it hadn’t been in someone else’s mouth or rotting all day in a dumpster. Why was it being thrown out instead of saved and donated? Yes, we could have been arrested. It’s a crime to be hungry?
No, the parents were not on drugs. The mother worked part time in a gas station to which she walked six miles to save on gas! The father was disabled with what was probably COPD. He’d previously done some mining but couldn’t anymore because he got so winded. He didn’t have black lung thus got no disability. They were raising eight children, three of their own and her sister’s five to keep them out of the foster care system.
Let's just appreciate her that she cooks people just that they don't die. She seems to be caring!

@@pumpkin-fu4cmmy mother used to work in a restaurant in Toronto in the early sixties , and she was telling me that the owners took all the meat that was leftover from people’s plates and saved it , and put it in the fridge , and one’s a week they used to make meat croquettes out of the chopped leftover minced meat , and people thought they tasted wonderful , and I asked her did you report that to the department of health ? And she said no I didn’t because she was afraid she would lose her job , the restaurant is probably gone now but it was run by Dutch people , and the same name , so everyone that ate croquettes in the sixties in Mississauga at a restaurant , yes that’s what went on ! Mom is gone now and I’m sure those people are gone also , I don’t think she signed nda , but anyway cheers !
They need to reduce portion sizes and obviously price as well. That would help at least for me I cant finish a big mac combo maybe half of it

I can tell u, that in the poorest communities at least in my country Argentina, congregation and sharing food is every day thing, Mostly is like "hey lets make a stew", "I have some rice and onions" "i have some meat and tomatoes" "I have this" "I have that" and thats how poor ppl eats

But I do have a different opinion, because there is more going on here (. Sometimes, when a person is a guest in other countries and cultures, and been invited into their homes, ect., that person may be offered food, that’s meant as a sign of respect. Not always, but sometimes, refusing that food can be seen as a sign of disrespect. Maybe this guy didn’t know that. I didn’t know that-until my cousin told me this; a situation just like this happened to him. But it does not help this dudes case, that he is filming people humbly digging thru garbage, to make a dish his entire documentary is about. And it really didn’t help him, when his film crew all sat down and took a plate. And it absolutely didn’t help that he lied and said he had food poisoning, because it was obvious he didn’t have food poisoning. I almost feel a bit sorry for him. Next time, maybe he will just accept the plate. ( You don’t have to chow down with wild abandon)

I am a Filipino who onced lived in the slums. We use the toilet of bus stations. Bathe in the street deepwell. Sleep in a pushcart. Hard work got us to a comfortable life now with a couple of houses, cars and businesses. Don't fool your self. Living in poverty is not a happy life. That's a life of anxiety and hardship.
The fact that the food was eaten by someone else wouldn't be my main concern, bur rather what else was put into the trash like this CZcamsr said. This video made me ponder how we must choose happiness every day. Blue T-shirt Guy was respectful and so kind. Evelyn and the people of Tondo are an inspiration.

Watching this as a Filipino citizen for my whole life has painted Tondo and its people in a new coat of paint, it makes me appreciate what I have being a part of a middle class family in a metropolitan city with proper living conditions and availability for food.

I've watched a ton of travel videos by many different hosts, this place seems to have the most genuinely nice people!
I love that they are resourceful and grateful people. Nothing goes to waste and that's a good thing. That's recycling!!!! They are a people that knows how to survive when times are harsh. Very smart!!! And Evelyn the was she present that dish is appetizing!!! Deliciously done. I like the process in which she prepares it, to make sure no one gets sick beautifully done. 😊

I was so inspired by this story. The resilience of the people and their support and kindness for one another. I'm sure there are other stories in Tondo that are hard to bear witness to, however, I appreciated seeing an aspect of this community that demonstrated their resourcefulness and work ethic. Something else that spoke to me was the reuse of animal product that otherwise would be wasted. I feel that in not wasting a single part, and feeding hungry families who need affordable meals, this woman fully honors the sacrifice of the animal's life and suffering to sustain a human being in all the ways she possibly can. It is easier to find gratitude and let go of perceived hardship seeing people find delight in these circumstances. Thank you, Drew.

My brother’s wife is filipino and that is how i found out about pag pag. Frankly while I’m Squeamish about this dish i am very touched by the poverty and the lengths they would go to survive and salvage and still maintain that smile and spirit. Every beauty has its ugly side. But the beauty of TONDO is, although they eat from the trash, they're hands are clean, didn't steal anyone, they are all thriving to live from others rubbish. Compare to luxurious houses or places but full of greediness, jealousy and inhumanity.

My second video on pag pag and it doesn’t get any easier to watch. It’s remarkable the joy and gratitude these people share, not to mention resourcefulness. Because of the obvious public health risks I wonder wouldn’t she turn over a similar profit selling rice and an inexpensive meat dish like hot dogs. Clearly not a zero cost operation but saves on labor by not having to procure scraps.

It’s nice to see this place again, I’ve visited this place about 5 years ago to complete our community development subject. As a foreigner I was warned that I’m susceptible to snatching and the like, so my classmates and other employees of the barangay were all eyes on us. Regardless of few negative experiences, I enjoyed every single moment of our stay. People are friendly especially the small ones each time we teach them numbers and letters. It was our last day when we try pagpag from a humble home, probably not the best food that I tried but good enough to fill you up for the day. It was not food that makes everything remarkable nor the negative experience, it was the extreme hospitality and the friendly atmosphere that makes you home. But I doubt that they would even try to read our studies and recommendations as no actions has been taken since then. I still remember when I first entered high school, me and some of my friends watched a short documentary about this in the Philippines. At that time, I felt disgusted watching the video, and it became a trending topic of conversation in school. But now, after 12 years have passed, I came across a video coverage about the same thing, and now I understand and have gained a different perspective.
Heartrending yet very inspiring story. The woman is admirable in the sense that she faced her own struggles ( hardships, her husband left her) head on and chose to put a purpose in her existence. She chose to be happy.

As I lived in Abu Dhabi and interacted and lived with filipinos almost all my life, I can't say nothing but they're a great people from a wonderful country who are always positive, humble and hygienic and respectful.

Philippines is a country with great wealth gap and is overpopulated since the country is so small. Have you ever travelled outside your country?? Even 1st world countries have homeless and population below poverty and there are also working class, upper middle class, high income and elite people.
Society is really messed up! I was at the grocery store here in FL and the store employee comes with 2 big shopping carts and collects all the perfectly packaged pre made sandwich's and foods 1 day before expiration everyday and then throws them away. They would not let me take it to give to the homeless because of sanitary concerns. I tell them its way better than them picking it out the garbage they say dont care and company policy will not give permission. Its baffling in such an 'advanced' time we live in we can't resolve this simple issue of food waste and distribution.

But the biggest problem from the business side of things if worrying about getting sued to Oblivion. Just to risky of a liability to donate food and not get sued.
But we definitely need to improve that. Ultimately we know that capitalism is the main cause of all this

@@Da-Sheek Again the big CEO in charge will always tell you to throw away the food, no matter how much the customer wants the food and willing to sign a waiver.
The Corporate guys will always protect themselves. So it's understandable that even if the store manager wanted to, he couldn't in any way shape or form.

Kudos to you for caring! Don’t despair. There’s an organization in Brooklyn, NY that’s been rescuing food like this from restaurants for 40 years! It’s known as “City Harvest”, they collect both kosher and non-kosher food. 🌱
Never will I waste food again or complain about not having my favorite treat. While one persons life is of luxury and others a life or de@th struggle, this should never be. So much good food, non-expired food, fruits or veggies with a tiny blemish going to trash while people starve like this is absolutely atrocious. Never will I complain about a bruised fruit or veggies. This is absolutely eye opening. I'm not naive to such things, but truly seeing it like this, we all should see it.

Thank you for sharing this. I have met several people from the Philippines during the course of my life, and they all seem so happy, humble and enjoy life, no matter how rich or how poor. Makes me want to go there and visit and meet the people. I'm sure they are completely different from Americans.

I’ve worked with Philippino women for 20 years. I must say they are the cleanest and most Generous women I’ve ever known. Always making food and sharing with us. Always dressing nice and I respect them a lot. Also I respect Tita Evelyn for making an honest living and feeding the poor

I also look at it and think, "gross", but then I look around me (I'm a nomad, currently in rural Kenya for 3 months) and remember that even growing up in poverty in the US was a privilege. Many people here make $100 a month and groceries are about half as expensive as in NYC. You'd do it too if you were literally starving to death.
This made me appreciate things even more like food shelter and just the place we live thank you for sharing with us 💯

In Singapore, we learnt this in school. This taught us of the inequalities between countries in our region. It is important to learn from this and value the basic things in life and not take it for granted

If the big food businesses like McDs and Jollibee know that this goes on, surely they can atleast store the waste food in cleaner and seperate waste bins away from the rest of the garbage. This can help to reduce the chances of these people getting food poisoning from it, i understand it gets cleaned to a certain extent and cooked at high temps but it cant be healthy for them.
I’ve learned something because of this video. If you’re set your mindset to be happy and to be grateful what you’re already have, the life is more happier than what you think. I think I expect too much on something that makes me forgot that I have to be grateful what I have right now. My dad is from Tondo Manila. I went to Phillipines to visit that city and it was such a humbling and eye opening experience. We really have it good in America. I think it looked way worse 15 years ago! I definitely would want to go back one of these days and to try to help out the community.
I'm both touch and saddened, and as many others in the comments have said, thank you for putting my life in perspective. Although the level of joy and love in their lives is something they have much more of than I do.
