I once dated someone who couldn't understand how anyone could watch "such a miserably depressing movie" as "Dancer in the Dark". "Pointless" is how they described it. We didn't date much longer after that. I realized that someone who cannot understand the extraordinary beauty found in Selma's sacrifice really can't understand love. If they see the ending as a senseless tragedy rather than a selfless triumph then there must not be anyone in their lives they care about more than themselves.
Well I find this movie very good (the only good one from Von Trier), but there is actually something very pointless: Selma is a beautiful and heroic character so it's natural to be by her side, but let's face it: the cold reality is that she ruined her life by herself. She committed the homicide after a mistake she made, she has a guy that likes her and that could avoid bad future for Selma and her son, but she disregards him, she played a contradictory crazy role in the court like she was nasty and insane. I repeat: Selma is a beautiful character, but what is the point of her character, except Von Trier uselessly messing with female protagonists and destroying them (like in basically all of his movies)?
@@Snarl616 i understand your point but Selma did this things not because she was being mean or dumb, she didn’t want to date Jeff because she was too busy working to afford his son’s operation, and anything that she could have said in court could have been used against her, she had everything to loose from more innocent she was, I mean an immigrant women from a communist country in the 60’s kills a cop “one of Americas defenders” was like having Satan sitting in court, she was actually very smart in those aspects
@@Snarl616how is having a guy liking her could save her future? lets say they both could ve afforded her sons surgery but isnt it unfair for him if she married him when she knows so well shes becomimg blind? she could not drag him into her misery and lets say some stuff are indeed "pointless" (I totally think theres nothing pointless) isnt it lame and useless for the movie to have a happy ending? its a realistic movie that describes cruel reality and how a beautiful and an innocent soul thats in the same time isnt so innocent could get that much damage and hate from society and the world in general
@@lucy-ep6cl You all Von Trier's fans seem to talk with emphasis about things you really know not so much about or don't really get. She kills a cop after a mistake she did, and her character is so written with no depth that in court she acts and behaves totally different, but yeah poor lady: she gets the evil because she's (and I quote from you) "innocent soul thats in the same time isnt so innocent". She killed a cop, but she gets damage and hate so that's ok, right?
@@Snarl616 She’s naive and desperate - that’s why she kills the cop after he begs her to. Then later during the court scenes, her perception of reality is so turned around that she’s too confused to answer any of the questions properly and doesn’t understand that she’s incriminating herself. She’s a hopelessly naive foreigner with poor vision, of course she’s not going to be able to manage herself in court that well. Your point that she was wrong for not marrying Jeff after finding out he liked her is also insane. She wasn’t comfortable being married, it’s not fair to say she should’ve forced herself into a situation like that.
There's more to see, more to know, more to care about... The dance sequences in this movie against Bjork's unique sound always take my breath away in a good way.....
i haven't seen this movie since high school; i rented it from the library bcus i love Bjork and put it on while i was folding laundry. the end started happening and i had to sit the fuck down and i just remember bawling. like vocal, making sound bawling. no other movie has ever done that to me. bjork's ability to act really shines at the end. i couldn't believe how talented and raw she is.
I graduated in 2001 and remember watching this around that time as well. It is so interesting to look back at that time now. All the good things in movies and music were sort of underground. By that time the popular music and movies were so awful that they really pushed our generation away. I mean the radio was playing Limp Bizkit and britney spears at that point. No 17 year old with half a brain is going to listen to that. At least we had people like bjork and thom yorke that weren’t too difficult to find if you looked around a little.
Dont know if you guys gives a damn but if you guys are bored like me during the covid times then you can watch pretty much all of the latest movies on Instaflixxer. I've been binge watching with my brother these days :)
yes train sounds, factory sounds, stuff like that becomes the beat in her mind in the movie she creates the songs according to them and she makes it so good
Not getting at least one alternate demo on a collection album was such a huge disservice to Peter Stormare. Sure, he’s not an accomplished singer, but the sentiment of his performance here is still effective!
"And lives that were over before they were spent" - this line breaks my heart each time I hear it as it refers to lots of people, I guess including me..
I hope that someday i will come up (make) with a movie that can touch people as this one did to me, fantastic-simple techniques that caught the attention of the viewer... great "unexpected" events and... first time i see Bjork! and by the way... i can't take this part of the movie out of my head ... it's "playing" all the time!
После "Танцующей в темноте" все последние работы Триера воспринимаются как детский сад (смотрел их раньше "Танцующей"). А сама песенка - это, конечно, прямо гимн суицидника
Yo quiero ver lo que nadie ha visto..pero contigo!

She to sing something which seems to be not transcribed in these lyrics and no other at all. Is it a melody without any meaning or is, for example, in Icelandic?

I made it through this whole movie dry eyed, and then the end hit me and I was bawling like a baby....... 😟

@Finnegan Skylar Definitely, I've been watching on instaflixxer for months myself =)
Same. Only movie to ever make me cry
How could I have never herd of this ??? It is so beautiful !
Did any one notice the train track sound becomes the beat of the song .. genius ?
Mark Bell noticed IT for sure...
yes train sounds, factory sounds, stuff like that becomes the beat in her mind in the movie she creates the songs according to them and she makes it so good

i was crying like a baby also
Me too...it’s one of the 2 or 3 times I cried watching a film...but it is worth seeing, it is a masterpiece
Beautiful film.. One of the greatest heart jerkers EVER!!
What the title?
das ist der beste Film den ich je gesehen hab und sehen werde, und immer wieder
This is a movie I'll never be able to watch again
"And lives that were over before they were spent" - this line breaks my heart each time I hear it as it refers to lots of people, I guess including me..
I'm having a weird day... practically in tears for no reason. I came here to get it over with and have a cry.
Masterpiece. I was in depths of pain. This song gave meaning to my pain
❤️
She is driving me to tears, everytime
“I’ll no longer hide it / yes, you move me to tears / over and over”
This is the one scene that made me shed a tear
This song is my favorite from the movie, it's brilliant- the performance, the lyrics, the cinematography, everything
love this.
Oscar award is meaningless for some movies. Dancer in the dark is one of them.
I've not seen it all yet because I need to see Bjork in concert.
Beautiful song!
...an absolute masterpiece in cinema history....
Emotion
GREAT SONG !!!
I cry every time I see it 😭😭😭
Great Movie, I cried too! It was like a weight was lifted off my soul. Thank You for the Lyrics.
Great movie! I feel the pain with this song.
En sevdiğim björk şarkısı dancer in the dark ♡♡♡
Directa al corazón
As much as love Thom Yorke, this version is soooooo much better. I wish this version was on the soundtrack.
La amo UuU
Enatrahar.el alma
Heartbreaking movie.
🎭A veces parece ficción y otras veces realidad✍No sé qué será, haz lo que debas hacer, yo te aprecio igual😌☺

No t even icelandic, just babbling, :P, like she always does,
she loves singing in gibberish, weirdly it's some of her best work
Takk!
Its sound like backward/reverse song!
♥️
I love it , but I feel sorrow.
Me gusta la canción pero la pelicula esta bien triste
Dance in dark.
I wanna know what she's saying at 0:45 and 2:42 :((
Veronica Rouby what she saying??
gibberish!
music dance in the dark movie..
Where is Thom Yorke???
NaKraM Productions On the CD soundtrack.
En Selmasongs
It's a shame that Björk spoke so negatively about von Trier. Of course, only after the film won the Palme d'Or in Cannes.
0:45 to 0:57
WHAT THE HELL IS SHE SAYING?
Agente Viscera it is gibberish, it doesn’t make sense...to sing along I say something like “guess sometimes I wonder...but I don’t care”
+Surreal Utopia and do you have any Idea what she says on 2:42 and the last part? 😮
It's simply pseudo language used to support her voice, such a musical instrument
I'm 8 I did not cry
If you are really 8 maybe you should watch movie you can understand
Masterpiece ... la la land is a trash !!!
Domenico Dolce la la what lol
La la land is overrated
How so beautiful music has been wasted in a so overrated movie?
Bjork hermosa, que preciosa y deliciosa mujer eras de joven con esa tristeza en tus ojos y ese espíritu de misterio que te envolvía
Se me aflojaron las heces de la emoción.
