(With Permission) Switching On a KONE TravelMaster 110 Escalator

  • *DISCLAIMER: This was done with permission from my supervisor. One of us was asked to switch on the escalators before the opening of the establishment to ensure smooth preparation and operational for all the people working here, so I decided to take this opportunity by filming this. The escalator key is owned by the establishment and I had been given permission to use it only to switch on the escalator. Do not attempt to switch on/off an escalator without permission from the owner or those who are in charge of the establishment!
    A relatively short clip of switching on a KONE TM110 escalator onboard a ship. At the beginning, the escalator wouldn't turn on when I attempted to switch it on. This is because the emergency stop system was enabled; one of the two stop plunger switches was on (someone had switched it on when he was cleaning the escalator last night) and had to be twisted back to its normal position (reset) in order to make the escalator move. The reason why there is an emergency stop plunger at both decks is to make people easier to stop the escalator in case of an emergency, so that they don't have to press the stop button on the escalator itself (which is located near the end of the steps).
    Also notice that when I reversed the direction the escalator would immediately stop first before I switched on again. I'm guessing that this is due to safety reason to prevent people from falling down or causing a stampede if the escalator suddenly changed direction during midway.

    You could easily stop an escalator with your feet. If you press your heels against the step behind you as you're going down. As soon as it detects the slightest bit of resistance it shuts off automatically.

    Ah, now I know how those switches work. But aren't these escalators supposed to buzz when it is about to start moving? I remember that one of the escalators at Botani Square in Bogor buzzed before it started moving, when a staff turned the key.

    • @idl3k_elev
      @idl3k_elev  Před 2 lety +6

      @Wiwuuvators Nope, there is no buzz or any sound in this escalator when you switch it on.

      Probably a safety regulation in some, but certainly not all, countries. Unless you mean mechanical noise.

      Depends, for example at my local shopping center, the former escalator (old Thyssen escalators) buzzed before starting up. The new ones (from Schindler) have a feature that turns them off after a few seconds when not in use, and they don't buzz when starting (but they have a smooth startup where the old ones started up very suddently)

      True, and I had to wait for the perfect time to get this on camera without getting seen by other people. I was lucky enough to work there for several months so I know exactly how was the situation in there, and only those who are legally working there can operate the escalator. Of course, being a crew member I could switch on the escalator whenever I had the chance to do so.
      Btw I'm not an elevator technician in case you're wondering, but I know some technical bits of elevators and escalators.

    I always think why are there 2 key slots and stop buttons on an escalator?

    • @idl3k_elev
      @idl3k_elev  Před 2 lety +22

      Simple, to allow a person to switch on/off or stop the escalator on either end (not just on one end).

    • @imaginox9
      @imaginox9 Před 2 lety +4

      On longer escalators you even have stop buttons at regular intervals along the escalator

    • @idl3k_elev
      @idl3k_elev  Před rokem +3

      I found out that on newer Schindler escalators (9300-11) manufactured after 2016 or 2017, the keyswitch is now located on the lower end rather than on both ends like before. Not sure what is the reason for that. The stop button remains the same as before (two buttons, one for each end).

    • @prankerganster3985
      @prankerganster3985 Před rokem +2

      Still, when u press the emegency button it shuts off the thing and you need to go down or up to reset it. If it was me I'd be too lazy and just switch the other escalators upwards ... Than apologise to whoever in there. Or just say it must get serviced so they need to go down and than tell not to go on up there.

    My thysenkrupp escalator must need a similar key movement combo to get it going. The only instructions I’ve seen say turn it once the direction you want to run and hold it there for 5 seconds before start up. That doesn’t work. I get lucky wiggling back and forth. Let me try this way.
