I have watched hundreds of UniFi Setup videos over the years. This was by far the cleanest, most concise and easy to follow (along with excellent suggestions and explanations) I have seen. Well done!
nothing to add here, well done!
Totally agree with you. This is just great content.
Agreed!
its as if he's a real professional consultant lol
Man, this guy is GREAT at presenting and explaining things. Please, more videos like this!
Definitely want an ADVANCED and EXPERT config guide.
Truly incredible video. Well explained, no skipping around or fluff. No overly riddled with jargon and no fast talking. Perfect!
Thank you for this video!! I'm getting my Dream machine Pro and U6+ and your video has helped me feel confident in setting it all up once it gets delivered. You've got a new subscriber.
I've watched tens of Unifi complete setup, but this video is the best one by far.
Thank you so much for your kind effort on making this video.
Please add donation/support or whatever link so that people outside US can support you on making other great videos.
Can't agree more with all the complimentary comments. Excellent video!!
your video are very easy to understand. Outstanding!!! It would be great if you could do video on firewall configuration in the future. Thank you for taking the time to make a laymen video.😃
This is a great video to watch! I would like to see more of those videos about Ubiquiti gear. Keep up the great work!
Great video. I would like to see more in depth videos related to how UniFi VPNs work. Also a video about how to get devices to talk across VLANs properly. I have a SONOS system on my IOT network, but my phone can’t talk to the system without getting on the same WiFi as the Sonos system.
@BruceRichwineJr, unfortunately you will find this the case with some devices like Sonos, I have the same problems with Roku streamers. There applications are "hard coded" to look on the same network as your mobile device. You can try setting up mDNS and see if you can over come this and get it to work but I wouldn't get your hopes up. Good luck....
Even without VLANs and VPNs, your device has to be on the same network as the Sonos. I have specific settings to put on my network devices to ensure the Sonos will work correctly, and I only use Ubiquiti products. I had this setup in 4 different office buildings we had.
I had the same problem with my customer’s Sonos systems, we find it best to be on the same network as the WIFI network. When I had WIFI on one VLAN and the Sonos on another VLAN with no traffic rules, Sonos system gave us trouble.😊
@@gregcandido2218 yeah, I’ve found the same issues you did. But originally I did have things working properly, but after and update to my UDM SE traffic stopped being passed between the two networks. It’s fine. I just created a new VLAN called media devices and separated it from my work and personal data devices. Only personal device that touches the media network is my phone.
Perfect timing I just received my cloud gateway ultra today. I like the basic approach to get up and running then customizing as you get more comfortable. I hope you can offer more videos on the unifi ecosystem. Thanks for this.
Great video of setting up unifi. Next how about a video around setting up firewall rules and best practices for securing the vlans. Firewall rules to disable vlans from talking the the Unifi gateway except on Default network as an example.
One of the BEST Unifi videos I've seen! Your security section and VLAN section was very easy to follow and understand. New subscriber! Keep up the GREAT WORK!!!
coming from @TerryLeeWhite that's saying something! This is indeed a well done and helpful video.
Great video! Thank you for making it - it certainly helps with setting up these devices!
Best video I have seen!
Great work 👌🏻
Would love to see more on adding camera’s. thanks!
Would have loved this when I was setting up mine a few years ago. Great refresher too. Hope to see you go into more advanced stuff.
Awesome tutorial. Very simple explaining and walk through. Huge kudos to this guy 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
thanks a lot for this video! This has clarified to me a things allowing to fill the dots and cover some black spots, thanks again
One of the best into to UniFi videos I've ever seen. Keep up the excellent work!
WOW this is such an awesome guide!
Thank you very much 🎉
Love the set!
Great video, more of these please. Thank you very much!
If you keep up this great work, your channel is about to blow up. This was the most needed thing for me to see concerning proper setup for my UDM. Thank you!
Awesome video, now I feel ready to set up any WLAN network.
Great video! I've learned a lot from this. I would like to see a video clarifying the set inform process and how/why to use it.
This is best setup video , clear straight to the point thank you
Great video thanks!
Great video and I appreciate your time and effort to make this. You might consider making second video on firewall rules. My question is ..does the core network has the rules that allow access to other vlans ? What are default rules for the vlans you created ? Also note pfsense can be as an IDS and IPS. Snort and Suricata works pretty well on pfsense.
Thats actually the only thing I am missing in this Tutorial - as per default all networks are allowed to talk to each other.
With the latest update to "Network 8.1.127" the Tab "Traffic Rules" has been deleted, so one has to configure this with the "Firewall Rules", but I couldnt find any video lately that covers this issue.
Great video especially for those who are just getting into using the UniFi Ecosystem.
Great video, you explain things very well. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I am not new to networking but I am new to Unifi. I just ordered my first 2 pieces of equipment from them, The Cloud Gateway Ultra and there Access Point U6. very excited to get the equipment and with the help of your video get it setup. My current setup I am using a Synology RT6600 AX router with built in wifi and I have setup VLANs for my home network with it.
Excellent video. Thank you!
Excellent video. Thank you for sharing! Appreciate your insight and expertise.
Clear and concise, thank you
Two minor corrections: Your timestamp about for VPN's is incorrect. It shows 28:53 and it should be 38:53. Also, it is Virtual Private Network, not Virturial Private Network as shown in the video. Otherwise, a great video.
Wow, amazing video. Just ordered from Ubiquiti: modem, UDM Pro, 48 port Pro max and u6 Pro APs - and I've watched this video twice ahead of delivery. Very well presented, easy to follow, great coverage of the main features, and excellent editing - my confidence is high! Thank you.
Great Video. Thank you.
Thank you, great video for beginners.
Awesome video. Thanks
This is awesome... Do you have a video on choosing the VLAN for devices?? ie. I don't know what to do with my printer and Synology NAS. Are they IoT devices, or Main. Currently my NAS is a FileServer on the Main VLAN, but what if I want it Internet facing for a Minecraft Server and Web Server
3:52 - Great video! I just bought 1 access point (U6 mesh) to add to my home network with no other Unifi devices. What is the name of the Windows software I will need to set it up?
Outstanding!!!
Im planning my network for my new house, and your video helped me a lot for the setup as i learned a lot about networking.
Just ordered udm pro and 2 u6 pro ap.
Can you please make a video including nas ( in my case DS224+ ) with firewall rules and how to setup vpn ( i guess) to connect to nas from outside?
Great content and extremely easy to digest, even for an IT expert, looking to check out UniFi offer. Keep up good work.
I really appreciated this video
Thanks!
Great tutorial. Will love to see a part-2 for Firewall settings specially blocking Security and IoT network from landing into the UDM login gateway portal.
great video. Do you guys work with networks that have Control4 in them for Home automation?
Awesome!
I love the space age touch! Are those SpaceX rocket engines? Great video!
Nicely done 👍👍
Just sub'd for this video! I have similar setup and it seems I configed it quite good comparing it with your guide! Learned a few things as well! What I would love you see in a Future video is this:
I have a server subnet with an ASUSTOR NAS in it. I want to backup my NAS over the internet (r-sync protocol) to another ASUSTOR NAS at my sister her house. So what unifi hardware is needed with my sister her house and how to configure the vpn between those 2 devices so that the backup of my NAS is encrypted while going over the internet to the other NAS at my sister.
I'm Dutch speaking so excuse me trying to explain it ... 😅
Greetz from Belgium
Hey, thank you!! And that should be made relatively simple with Unifi’s site magic. It will automatically create the VPN connection and do most of the heavy work. But Ubiquiti cloud gateways also support a range of other VPN protocols so you don’t need to have Unifi gear on the other end. For a small deployment a UniFi express gateway is perfect as well as a Dream Router!
I had this rpi with pihole and wireguard setup once and use the wireguard app to get back home. But i've set it up years ago via a lot of YT vids so can't remember how i did it hehehehe 😅
Let alone installing an rpi at my sister her house and setting up that with their stock ISP modem/router...
So be free to upload a vid on how to setup 2 unifi devices creating backups over internet 😊
Nice job on your presentation! I'm in the process of upgrading my home/home-lab network. I currently have pfSense, been using this for the past 7+ yrs, but with the current changes with Netgate, I've decided to try something else. I'll be setting up something similar as what you have shown in your video, but I do have a couple of questions. First, with unifi AP's how is MESH implemented if you have two or more AP's installed? Second, implementing something like "pi-Hole" or "AdGuard Home" worth the effort? With my current install of pfSense, I've utilized pfBlocker NG for ad blocking, and Snort for my IDS, both I find time consuming to keep an eye on.
I'm thinking of installing DM Special Edition, Pro Max 24 PoE, Enterprise 8 PoE ( this will be located in my garage for all the security cameras PoE) , U6 Enterprise, U6 Enterprise In-Wall, I may possibly be adding a third AP in the garage area at a later time.
Anyways, this will be my starting point, then moving forward.
Great Video, Just curious if you can do the same with a Cloud gateway Ultra vs a UDM Pro. Thanks
Cody, awesome video and amazing channel! What are your thoughts on TP-Link Omada?
In your example system, would you put a NAS on the Core Network?
Thanks for another great video. I'd like to see a tutorial on how to set up the Site-to-Site VPN with two Unifi gateways.
Very good video, please keep it up with this UniFi content
Great video, very helpful and anderstandable, I would love to see an advance tutorial
thanks for the info.... I recently installed a UDM pro but have an issue every time my internet goes out, after it comes back on I have to power cycle the UDM pro to get it to start flowing traffic. Is there a setting I missed?
Excellent 👌
Yup, this was Great.
very, very good 👍. Next i wish to see firewallrules
Thank you for the great video.Full support from middle of the Atlantic Ocean. As I have limited access to internet - can you tell me did you show on some video how to limit the data bundle for each guest/or stuff member ? Im in process of setting up network for my crew on board the vessel- but due to limited resources we have to share satelite "data bundles " equaly/honestly. Wrgds and mthks in advance.
I didnt quite understand why you had to configure DNS separately for switch and access point ? Would they just inherit the one you already set in the gateway? Also, I guess it’s better to use static ip configuration on the client rather then reserved ip based on MAC address but in case you decide to change your main IP address have to reconfigure everything again. Anyway great video !
Awesome, best tutorial yet. How can I prevent access to devices when users keep changing their mac addresses and how can I continue to block malware when a user installs and uses a VPN on their device?
I don't recommend using static addresses, it is just confusing to users. Use DHCP reservations. That way your DHCP client list documents your network gear as well. I also reserve network gear in the 200+ range. Router is 254, other devices are 200-253. Reason being is REALLY simple. DHCP leases always start a the lowest value and increase numerically from there. So, by giving the DHCP range 1-199 you are giving the devices the lowest IPs and don't get stuck wanting more low-end IPs later. For example, you add a switch later and would think to make it 10.69.1.2. It is a simple concept and usually is thought of way later when it is harder to change. Everyone starts by configuring the networking gear so of course they start at 1. I suggest they start at 200 instead and reserve the highest for the router, which also makes it really obvious what the netmask is for your network.
Fantastic tutorial!
Thank you for this video! I'm just starting out in this area and wanting to make my first homelab setup and I still don't completely understand everything but this video helped out tremendously. I really like the Unifi products and would definitely be using them for the build, its gonna be a long road to save up for the ones I'm wanting.
Can you change the port for ui web login as I run webservers and need the ports for my servers?
Do you plan on making a more in depth video on firewall rules? Including VPN firewall rules?
Dido @thejayzed Dido.... Just amazing delivery thanks!
I'll do some searching on this channel, but will there be a Firewall Rules to Match this CZcams?
Also, I do enjoy consistency and nomenclature, would it be to much to ask for a diagram where by the naming conventions are equal across to identify where\what they are, it started of really good but tither off on naming convention.
But Thanks a Million (Your name was not on the CZcams) :)
what is really annoying about people pushing Unifi products is that they never mention they are more than likely out of stock. Point in case is the UDR which has not been in stock for weeks. I do worry about choosing a supplier that can not manage its stock and manufacturing process correctly.
I configured the L2TP VPN but it doesn't work.
DMSE is connected directly to the operator's ONT in PPoE mode. It works directly as a modem. Is this the problem?
Would be great to see vlan best practices
Part 2? Please
Thanks i was waiting for this tutorial. I have a question. Any way to translate this video to another language, like Spanish?
click on the CC link to start Closed Captions, then on the gear icon and select the language.
My dream router was DOA the customer support was garbage. Ended up throwing it in the garbage!

Apologies for being pedantic, but being the old-network-engineer-fart that I am, I can't let this go unchallenged.... Just for the record, if you google "when were VLANs invented," you'll see it says 1998 which is when 802.1Q VLAN tagging was adopted. Of course, Cisco being Cisco, they had opted for their own proprietary flavor of VLAN'ing in the form of ISL (inter-switch link) though they did eventually join the bandwagon within a couple of years and eventually phased out ISL altogether somewhere around 2012 on some platforms. Granted, that's a dime's worth of in human-terms, but the time-difference between when this guy says 2005-2006 and 1998 is an epoch in IT terms.
They're starting to disable the option of switching to "Legacy" Interface
For ids/ups it would be great to be able to report any hits ips detects and report the attack to the ip address owner or cyber crimes agency in your country, or more detailed logs for reporting
Unifi is more very easy to configure.. even you have no skill networking.. between mikrotik is hard to configure
Everyone is commenting on how great this is but I am completely lost and nothing lines up the way you say it does. I'm assuming this is an obsolete video due to changes in Ubiquiti's menus...but things don't exist where you say they do. The screen showing networking doesn't exist, my menu looks completely different and I'm totally lost. hopefully I didn't blow a thousand bucks for nothing! You've done a great job, so don't think I'm attacking you. I'm just letting you know these menu's no longer look like this, despite the fact that you did this video recently.
I don’t like your video. It makes me lust after that Unify equipment, which is against the 10 Commandments. And my wife might kill me when I buy it, which is against the law. So you can see my objections to the video.
Other than consigning my eternal soul to Heck, where it may be tortured by a devil named Phil, this was a great video. I look forward to updating mine home network. Thanks!
