"This song is called Frodo of the nine fingers"
*starts singing about bilbo*
Well it is Bilbo Baggins, bravest little hobbit of them all. He fought with the Goblins, he battled a troll, he riddled with gollum, a magic ring he stole; he was chased by wolves, lost in a forest, escaped in a barrel from the elf king's halls.
@@Steve0C but it was literally called Frodo of the nine fingers and meant to explain why he has nine fingers 😂
@@-mushroom7757 it's called context
@@Steve0C Rider on barrels? INTERESTING!!!
Well the whole idea was that the whole movie is a tale being told by this minstrel. So to all the characters, he proceeds to tell of what happened after Bilbo found the ring and how Frodo destroyed it.
Bilbo: "Frodo! Tell me what happened!"
Frodo: "Well-"
Gabdalf: "Actually, we brought somebody more qualified to tell stories."
*starts singing about Bilbo mostly*
Lolol
Frodo: "Well, then I shall not write down the story! It will never be recorded in a red book that will be translated by an english professor in a distant future, and enjoyed by readers the world over.
I know my place!"
gabdalf
Gabdalf 👍
love how the song fails to explain anything about how frodo lost his finger
nerfman6s2ndacc Frodo lost his tenth finger since Gollum bit it off trying to remove the ring.
@@sakunaruful he probably knows that!
The song is used as a framing device for the whole story being a flashback. Presumably we aren't hearing the whole song as we see the events as they play out through the movie and the movie closes with the minstrel finishing his song.
@@Drakin292 That's exactly what happens in the film.
lmao that's a good point actually
Love how the Minstrel of Gondor was just standing there waiting for someone to introduce him.
Nobody questions the fact that his nose takes up most of his face?
+Dormammu It's a pretty common trait for Rankin/Bass characters.
Not for "men"...and Gandalf.

@@Chiller31916 And my drum!
I cannot describe my emotions when I read Return of the King, and there really was a Minstrel of Gondor who sang Frodo of the Nine Fingers and the Ring of Doom. It really blew my mind that Tolkien created that character, and it was not a Rankin-Bass original.
Wait seriously? You not goofin right?
Glenn Yarbrough: "How much vibrato do you want?"
Rankin and Bass: "Yes."
Thank god someone talked about how much vibrato there was, it was driving me mad...
Glenn Yarbrough was the perfect voice for the minstrel of Gondor. His voice is a legend to me as I listen to Glenn.
You have to admit, whatever your thoughts about the vibrato, it is impressive and gives the right sort of sound for this exact role.
Haha, quite an amazing voice
It's even worse if you listen on drugs.. ask me how I know...
This song is quite possibly my earliest memory of the Lord of the Rings in any form. This movie was my introduction into the series, and for a long time I always referred to the One Ring as the Ring of Doom, not realizing that it's just a bard's poetic description from this movie alone.
I haven't heard this song for 20 years but I still sing it randomly
Ikr right, I got so confused when Feanor's trial happened
It's in the books, not exactly like this obviously, but Sam says is and then a minstrel of Gondor is in the chapter The Field of Cormallen.
Random language fun: The name Cormallen is a linguistic (philological?) reference to Camelot.
Fairly certain the Ring was occasionally called the Ring of Doom in the books. Granted, I haven’t read the books since the movies came out but if I recall, the ring had many names, that being one.
@@PhoenixPhire22 In fact, the Minstrel of Gondor in specific calls it the Ring of Doom in the book
I can't stop laughing at Gollum, he looks like a miserable beanie baby
😂😂
That's a goof joke :)
Honestly tell me you'd laugh at him when sitting in a cave with him a few feet away, muttering about eating your flesh and leaving the bones
He looks like a Pokemon
Gave me nightmares as a kid
What a voice that man had. These movies were what got me interested in folk music.

Matt Stoneback and ballads
@@chipsnegativeharmonyrips7187 That sad. His songs in The Hobbit and Return of the King was as much the soul of those movies as the John Williams score was to Star Wars.
I love the implication that Bilbo's been in the dark about the ring the entire time. He's just sitting there like "Man, I hope Bilbo takes care of that sweet ring I gave him."
Then he shows up all like "Yeah I threw it into a volcano" _"WHY?"_
Without the Ring, Bilbo's age has caught up with him. He is a bit senile at this point.
@@mjbull5156 That's why he was like "I remember that!" When they talked about him finding the ring
Bilbo was middle-aged in The Hobbit when he found the ring.
The Lord of the Rings starts several decades later, when he's turning eleventy-one. It's very explicitly explained in LotR that Gandalf didn't realize what the ring was until the beginning of that story. He knew it was something special, but he was in the middle of their adventure and couldn't take the time to look into it.
He didn't know that it was *THE* Ring until the very beginning of Fellowship when he came and put it in the fire to check.
But how did Frodo lose his finger? You had one job minstrel dude!
It was bitten off by Gollum.
(@True Lion of Hylia) r/whoosh
The implication is that we're only hearing part of the song. This is supposed to be a framing device for the entire story.

I remember I once taped one of them in EP mode (4 hours on a T120 - a sort of middle speed really old VCR's had) but later erased it because I needed the tape... I now regret erasing it.
The animated LOTR always reminds me of my grandmother. I love them both 😊
Honestly, I get that these two movies are seen as kind of weird and fairly "cringey", but I'll always love them. They were my childhood, and they have so much heart and Tolkienish atmosphere.
Facts.
This is what we had as kids. Animation hand drawn.
I'll say it. They are better than the movies - Especially the Hobbit
I've always loved both the animated and live action adaptations. There's room in this world for both of them.
We were the ones that liked LotR "before it was cool"
The name of the singer here is Glen Yarbrough, he was a popular folk singer from the 60s and was in the folk group the Limelighters.

I'm not enamored of the character design, but I absolutely love the watercolor backgrounds from this and the Hobbit. Gorgeous!
What don't you like?
During the song when the minister is talking about how Smaugh, the Spiders, the Goblins and the Elves came to know Bilbo's true strength and instead of showing us the scenes where Bilbo fought off the spiders, outwitted Smaugh and freed the dwarves from the elves, they show us scenes of him being weak and useless......

The coolest thing about this song is the fact that a minstrel of Gondor is actually mentioned singing a song about "Frodo of the Nine Fingers and the Ring of Doom" at the end of Return of the King.
Gandalf is a like a demi-god he can't age, he's immortal. In fact, he's well over 32,000 years old and helped with the creation of Arda.

Very profound. The first and the last owner of the One Ring both lost their finger.
frodo of the nine fingers would be a good name for a power metal band.
I grew up with this, and to be honest, I prefer it to the live action films, precisely for musical bits like this. The last song, with the line 'Roads go ever on' makes me cry every time.
I know many don’t care for this movie due to its weird artistry but the songs, for me, are one of the best parts. In the old days, stories were told by bards in songs and poetry.

I love how the filmmakers spoil the ending to make sure the kiddies don't get scared that Frodo and Sam won't make it out.
Then made the absolute baffling decision to say the hobbits were evolving into humans
@@LordHoth_09 I have no idea why they felt the need to add that part in. Maybe because they really wanted to lean in hard about "Middle-Earth being real Earth", so they wanted to explain why we didn't still have hobbits, but yeah. It was dumb.

For that time period, I'm sure they were the shit. But when you take more into consideration? They're actual trash, and I'm not sorry.
Yep they leave out alot and have no character growth and as a result feel rushed
To be clear about the Gandalf thing, he as a Maia is an immortal being, created from the thought of Illuvatar at the beginning of existence. He is a being of angelic power, and is of precisely the same order of beings as Sauron, who was a Maia follower of Morgoth before his exile. Being immortal, he cannot die as men do and his spirit continues to dwell in this world. Like the Elves, that spirit can take on a new body. The Ainur (Valar and Maiar) have no need for bodies of flesh, regarding physical form merely as clothing. Gandalf was special chiefly in that he returned to Middle Earth after his body was destroyed, his mission as one of the Istari (Wizards) not having been completed. The Elves could technically do this if they wanted also, but almost never do, choosing instead to be re-embodied in the Blessed Realm of Aman. Only Glorfindel among the Elves chose to remain in Middle Earth after he was killed, being on a mission similar to that of Gandalf to aid the peoples of the wide land in their struggle against Sauron.
If I am correct, Gandalf was the only one to succeed in the Maiars purpose of bringing peace.
+Doctor Fate that's correct. Gandalf was the only of the Istari to actually help on Arda like Eru wished. the two blue wizards went east and just kinda fucked off until the War of Rings, Saruman became a dick & Radagast just smoked weed.

What’s crazy is that I first bought this movie in anticipation for the LotR trilogy coming soon to theaters. Me and my buddy in high school were so excited for FotR… at the time, this movie was 20 years old… now the LotR trilogy is as old as that was then. Yet this movie felt ancient… LotR still feels like it came out yesterday. Where does the time go? Lol

Luke Dearey Dude, it's really not a bad movie at all, at least in my opinion. Sure the animation quality isn't near the standards we have today, but that doesn't mean it doesn't do a good job of telling a story. I recommend you watch it, I know I've always had a blast watching it. A review is generally the opinion of one singular people or a small group of people, that doesn't mean it's necessarily BAD, it just means that this particular reviewer didn't like it. Of course if there was not a single living person who enjoyed this movie that would be a completely different matter!

Lyrics:
Frodo of the Nine Fingers
And the ring of doom...
SPOKEN (MINSTREL OF GONDOR): "It has its beginnings two Ages past, When Bilbo set forth to reclaim the Dwarves' gold from the Dragon Smaug... And while on his quest Bilbo stumbled into a deep dank cave."
SPOKEN (BILBO): "Oh,this part I remember..."
When Bilbo found that shiny ring
In Gollum's cave of gloom,
He never thought that it would turn
Into a ring of doom.
The Dragon Smaug, the Spiders, too,
The Goblins, the Elven-king,
They came to know the power of
The Hobbit and his ring.
Frodo of the Nine Fingers
And the ring of doom.
It started with a Hobbit in
Gollum's cave of gloom.
The power of the ring, it grew,
And Gandalf sat in thought.
He knew that it must be destroyed
In fires where it was wrought.
For if in evil hands it fell,
The earth would know its end.
No force of arms would win the day,
No army could contend.
SPOKEN (GANDALF): “For evil flourished everywhere and laid upon the land like a festering malignancy. There was one hope though, in a distant land, the Noble Aragorn, heir to empty throne on Gondor awaited the small band to return and become King. But he could not triumph until the Ring was destroyed so went the prophesy.”
"Frodo of the nine fingers and the Ring of Doom.....Why does he have nine fingers?"
*Gollum takes a big bite and Frodo screams out in pain*
"Where IS the Ring of Doom?"
Omg thank you!!!!
Frodo of the Nine Fingers
And the Ring of Doom
Why does he have only nine fingers?
Where is the Ring of Doom?
As the Ring was kept in Bilbo's keep
Returned the bringer of death and pain
A great and terrible lord of dark
The true owner of Isildur's Bane
A fellowship of the Ring was forged
A quest on a treacherous path
To save the souls of Middle Earth
From the evil Sauron's wrath
Frodo of the Nine Fingers
And the Ring of Doom
Why does he have only nine fingers?
Where is the Ring of Doom?
The fellowship shattered by horrific loss
Still would Frodo bear the Ring
And from Two Towers the Enemy feared
The Return of the King
In molten heart, the deed was done
The wretched foe was slain
A simple Hobbit would cast him back
Into shadow from whence he came
Frodo of the Nine Fingers
And the Ring of Doom
Why does he have only nine fingers?
Where is the Ring of Doom?
