I can't even begin to describe how big of a deal this was as a 6 year old in 1977. A full length animated movie that aired during prime time, that you could sit and be immersed into with your parents on the living room couch. It was so magical. Back during the days when you had to wake up by 7A.M. on a Saturday to start watching cartoons, because that was the only time you could see them.

I remember watching this with my dad when I was 5, (we still have it on VCR and I recently watch it and was shocked by it) it brings back a lot of good memories of me and him before I got older. We would watch this up in the Wisconsin house at night, eat popcorn, and root beer and laugh/cheer for Bilbo. But this movie and song also taught me that even when you get older and have more in life to do never give up on a chance to go find your dreams and that adventure is always there to be at your front door..

It’s amazing to me that the Tolkein community can all come together in all aspects; Literature, Animation, Live-Action. I love it so much. It might be the last fandom that isn’t hateful. We welcome all interpretations even if they aren’t what we were expecting or want like The Hobbit Trilogy or Rings of Power. We can find things that we love in interpretations that we know aren’t perfect because we want to see the world that Tolkein created and I really think this song can sum up how we all feel about Tolkein’s world.

When I graduated college, I struggled finding a job. A company finally gave me a chance based on my skill-set; my apprehension was that they were set-up one-state over and I needed to relocate for the job. I had never traveled that far by myself before, nor lived too separated from the rest of my family for any great periods of time. Whenever I had a problem, they were always close-by to help me out. And I wasn't confident I could make it in my POS-Car.
When it finally came time to take the journey, I kept this song in my head. It was exactly what I needed to finally drum the courage to take the wheel and get on the road. The song is true in its words; sometimes trying to hold onto a moment of your life will hold you up. And if you think too hard about a problem, you'll shy away from facing it. Get out of your own head; stop thinking and take a chance.
Cause in the end, your entire life is just taking chances and changes...
And they're all _yours to make._

There are two moments from films from that year & that age that have stayed with me, that moved me, that stirred me, that created a longing for nothing I had any power to name. One was the moment in Star Wars: A New Hope, when a frustrated Luke comes up top after arguing with his aunt & uncle & stares at the two suns. The other was this song in The Hobbit.

Aww, why did we never get that film in Germany? We got the Last Unicorn (with Christopher Lee also doing the German dubbing of King Haggard, fantastic!) which is still one of my favourite films today, I never knew they did the Hobbit as well, how cool is that?? I would have been scared to death of some scenes, but I would certainly have enjoyed it anyway!

I think they could only show this in the States because of copyright issues (due to a technical error with publication, The Hobbit and LOTR were public domain in the US from the mid-1960s until sometime in the 90s, so Rankin Bass didn’t need permission to make this or Return of the King).
