    From the beginning, LOVEBITES have worked with Finnish engineers Mikko Karmila and Mika Jussila for mixing and mastering their albums and live bluray - I wish more bands would use such talented engineers.

    • @Mtaalas
      @Mtaalas Před rokem +8

      Mikko mixed their EP, yes, but I heard from my colleague, who works with Nightwish and knows Mikko, that he didn't work with the bands live recordings until this gig. And it's not only Mikko who has to know their stuff.
      There has to be very good technicians and stage hands that mic the drums and ensure they get good feeds from instruments and that there's minimal amount of bleed (choice of mics and reducing stage volume with in-ears and having very good singer who knows how to handle a mic properly)
      It's a large undertaking, takes way more time to build teh stage and set up, but Mikko knows his team and they're absolutely the best in business. And Lovebites had the money to do this properly and book the venue for long enough to get it good.
      Because you can't polish a turd, honestly... if it's shit when you record it live, then you'd have to RE-RECORD it in the studio after the gig... and that would be totally counter-intuitive to do and waste of money.
      So we know this gig is the real deal. Compression, EQ, tweaking the delay and reverb and there you go. If you have good recording from the get go... you get very good sounding material.

    Thank you for jumping on this so quickly. It is the most reacted-to of their live clips, and gives a pretty good idea of their style and capabilities. All you need now is to check out Swan Song (you got that recommendation several times on the last video) so you can see Miyako do her magic on the piano. Yes, there is post-production, but no amount of production can correct outright mistakes. And Lovebites almost never make mistakes.

    yes - the sound crew is amazing and are masters of the mix. even with post production everyone that has been to one of their live shows says that this is pretty much what you are hearing in a concert. the instruments are spot on the vocalist asami does not know what it means to hit an off note. best i've seen in many years. i must see them live while i'm still above ground.

      but Lovebites is a band full of musician..
      there's no way they sound sloppy..
      if they didn't sound good, then it should be the speaker or might be the mixing itself, not the band..

    I have never seen Lovebites live but I have seen Joe Satriani live at the Zenith in Paris. And I can tell you that the sound quality of this concert was equivalent to that of a CD with the super power of sound. And it's been many years now. So I can imagine the same sound quality live in a Lovebites concert, especially in Japan in a medium-sized venue, because the Japanese are on the cutting edge of instrumental technology.

    This is the song and video that helped Lovebites Blow up on YT. One of the most impressive bands I have Ever heard. Literally. You are right about remixing the Live sound however from many first hand accounts their live sound in person is nearly identical too what you hear on the DVD's. Lovebites invests much in their Awesome live sound gear and House mixing.

    • @TheCyberMantis
      @TheCyberMantis Před rokem +2

      When you book local venues, the crew has more time to set-up and soundcheck. Making everything as clean and tight as they can get it. When you tour in other countries, you are at the mercy of rented equipment, and foreign crews. You don't have control over all the variables. We all know what happened to Lovebites at Bloodstock. The band is still great, but the live sound may not be. Typically, the more you pay, the better it should be. But not every band can pay the stage/sound team a million bucks. Megadeth can, but Lovebites is not on that level yet.

    Love the reaction, the geek remarks were especially great. This is usually the first tune LIVE for most reactors and yet this doesn't make their top 10 list. If this was mind blowing try Swan Song with Chopin Etude intro (yeah classical piano and metal) or Frozen Serenade for piano and acoustic guitar. After that pick anything as these women can't compose or play a bad song. Some songs like this are less epic but there are no duds period. Been with the Wolfpack since 2017 and finally, these monsters are getting some well earned and deserved recognition. All the lives the drums are not mixed as high. Now you want azz kicking drums listen to their CD Clockwork Immortality. Any drum fan would drool over the way that is mixed. Haruna will use the kick almost like an accent drum. Break the Wall she uses gaps in the kick. She does have a unique gallop you can hear on quite a few tracks. IMO Swan Song is a drumming masterpiece that most overlook. Listen back to this how she dramatically changes from Miyako's solo to Midori's. Noticed on many many songs she will alter on each half of the chorus. Stand and Deliver she is rapid fire on the kick in one half then after the words "shoot 'em down" she folds the kick back. Brilliant the use of change ups she does. The lives do have flaws in them. If they were full on studio polish those would have been fixed. Miyako throws a huge clam on Daughters of the Dawn on the song Edge of the World and a second later she shakes her head knowing she hit a sour note.

    Just came across y'all's channel this week, and am enjoying your reactions and your music; so, you get a thumbs up and sub from this ye ole metal-head. I do tend to listen to more metal but good music is good music. Of the few of your songs I've hit play on, "If You Want It" may be my favorite thus far. The bass groove in that track really slaps.
    Aye. A lot of the live shows from bands that go on DVDs as well as those official live videos and live studio performances have some degree of post-production going on. I know some fans take offense to that when someone points it out, but it doesn't take away from the talent of the musicians. I've also been to some live shows where the combination of the talent of the band, the sound system at the venue, and the techs and sound people, it would have needed very little post-production the performance was that good. Saw Skid Row and Pantera at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, GA back in December of '91 and that concert is up there as far as one of the best live shows I've been too. Same with the Eagles in '94 at the Omni and a number of the Prog Power USA shows in Atlanta have been killer as well, especially the 2015 when I got to see Evergrey and Unleash the Archers. A local punk band, '68, are really good live too.
    Speaking of live, I am hoping Lovebites comes to the USA near me on their next tour, but I'm so freaking excited as I got tickets to go see Band-Maid's 10th Anniversary tour at the Buckhead Theatre in Atlanta in May. Band-Maid is another Japanese group I highly recommend y'all check out to continue down your "J"-Journey. A lot of people react to their "Domination" official live video for the first time but I would recommend either "Dice/Different" or "Manners/Black Hole" official live vids for J-LOD LIVE2.

    Nightwish has their live material recorded on site _RAW_ multitrack, then it's mixed again (because obviously you have to. When you mix for live, you mix for live... you need completely different mixing for dvd) but it DOESN'T mean they're recomping, reamping nor FIXING mistakes! You can definitely hear mistakes in Nightwish's dvd's. so you can hear mistakes in Lovebites full concert... but not MANY. because they absolutely are that good. I've heard raw recording of the multitracks from NW and from Lovebites and they're stellar... obviously they're mixed again from the recording, but they don't add nor do they remove anything. Because that would be totally wrong and offensive to your fans.
    I _hate_ bands that are sloppy live, then their DVD sounds amazing and flawless... they're lying to me and I won't listen to bands that have so little confidence in their own skills that they can't do without "studio magic".
    I want to hear THE BAND as they are. And many do understand this.
    But why do NW and Lovebites live-stuff sound so awesome? Because they're recorded and mixed by the same people in both of these cases (WAcken 2014 by NW, This gig from Lovebites). And they're worlds top 10 engineers, hands down.
    Metallica live-stuff sounds horrible, Dream Theater sounds horrible, Dragonforce has horrible sound in all that I've heard... they just don't have a good enough engineers to do live recording properly.
    Even Lovebites has older live-recordings and dvd's available where you can hear how bad they sounded in the past before they had better engineers in their team and more budget to do it right.
    But on this gig, they have one of the best in the business.
    And you can hear it.

    I TOTALLY get what you mean about over-production. In my opinion Japanese bands often seem to over-produce to a certain degree. Lovebites for example pretty much always sound better and heavier live than on CD in my opinion. With a lot of bands this is especially apparent with vocals, I'd say.
    Quite a few times I've heard a studio-recording and thought "DAAAAAMN, this guy/girl sounds SOOO good if you just let them do it! WHY did you have to put that much production on the vocals??"

    • @MaartenT
      @MaartenT Před rokem +1

      I completely agree with that, it's my biggest gripe with a lot of the Japanese albums I own. I don't think Lovebites falls into this category, but there are plenty of Japanese bands that tend to (imo) kill their songs by overproducing the vocals to the point that they sound more like J-Pop vocals (for lack of a batter word). It's probably a sound that they culturally like and that sells (it's also heavily used in anime soundtracks), but it typically really bounces off of me.
      There are a couple of bands now that I have basically put on a list of bands that I don't like the studio albums but do enjoy live, including Fate Gear, Bridear, Trident, Hagane and I'm sure there are more. I suspect Lonesome_Blue might be on that list as well, but I haven't heard them live yet. I am really skeptical of buying any of their non-live stuff actually if it doesn't include a live DVD or so. I am not a huge Babymetal fan, but I would put Babymetal on that list as well as their albums are extremely overproduced and while their live stuff is very produced as well, you can certainly hear Su has a good voice on their live stuff while their albums are pure production and auto-tune/pitch-correction.
      I noticed it especially with Fate Gear and Bridear, I basically wrote them off because of the vocals and gave them a final chance with a ticket to a livestreamed set and I was amazed on how much better their vocalist sounded live. I expected that they weren't that good and put all that production on their vocals to cover it up. That production removes so much soul from their vocals, it's a shame.
      As far as the live Blu-rays from bands like Lovebites and Band-Maid goes. Yes, they are very produced, but I personally wouldn't call them overproduced. I like their approach on them even though I do love that we nowadays also have livestreamed versions of concerts that are basically untouched as well.

      @@MaartenT 100% this! I realised it especially hard when listening to those older Whiskey Dust recordings. Who plastered and deadnt her voice with all those effects and cleanup??"

    Somebody must've commented this already that the mixing and post engineering is done by the same Finnish guys did mixing for Nightwish. Lovebites regularly use back tracks of synthesized strings and key boards for extra layers but It is totally alright with me to build epic sound. But the former bassist Miho left the band for that reason, I guess. It is my speculation but Miho has mentioned that she thought the band shouldn't rely on a missile such as shredding guitars, and also said she did not like back tracks and effects. She was a serious metalhead and was the band founder and the leader, and a great fan of Steve Harris and Iron Maiden as you can guess from their Maiden sound. I think Miho wanted Lovebites to be solid and raw metal band as polished Iron Meiden or Judas Priest, an ultimate heavy metal band of the golden age of metal from 80s, but Lovebites wanted to go ahead forward to new horizon of metal with all the tricks and engineering. That is my speculation.

    • @TheCyberMantis
      @TheCyberMantis Před rokem +3

      Maybe. But nothing is new here. Other bands have been doing this for a long time. Look at Symphony X and Dream Theater. Instead of two guitars, they have one guitar and one keyboard player. Lovebites has two guitar players, and a part-time keyboard player. Lovebites seems to want both guitars AND keyboards going together, so there has to be a backing track. Either Mao records it, or Miyako records it. If Lovebites wanted to go the DT or SyX route, they would put Miyako on a synth full-time. Maiden added synth sounds on the "Seventh Son" album. Lots of prog and power-metal bands use keyboards. I'm cool with whatever Lovebites wants to do. Their strength is in the songwriting and the talent/skills of the musicians.

    I think your comment regarding live videos maybe generally right, but in the context of Lovebites, there are plenty of raw live recordings that are equivalent of this video. Yes, it’s mixed, but I dare you to claim there’s any ‘tuning’ on Asami’s vocals for example. Just no. Now there are Lovebites tracks with backing tracks - deal with it. Miyako can’t play guitar and keyboards at the same time. But you can be sure she plays everything you hear, whether it be track or live. These ladies are insanely talented.
