Listen to that crowd in the 4th quarter. Man it was fun watching the Raiders in LA.
I been waiting for a long time to see this game again,37 years! The Steelers really stunned the football world with this upset.Nick Buoniconti on inside the NFL gave them no chance and the following weeks show was wearing a Steelers cap at beginning of show. And the Steelers pulled off another amazing win against the 13-3 Broncos in playoffs.I think the Raiders underestimated the Steelers and the letdown from this loss seemed to carry over into the wildcard against Seattle the next week and lost by the same score 13-7 if my memory is right
The Broncos loss to Pittsburgh in '84 upset me more than any other Bronco loss ever...and that's saying a lot. Marino was torching Elway in play and media coverage...I wanted a qb duel more than anything. Still bothers me
@@fjr70 Believe Elway and Marino only played head to head against each other twice in their careers. Which is so bizarre considering there was 16 years in the same conference. That would have been an awesome AFC Championship if it was the Broncos and Dolphins in 1984.
👍
This game was revenge for all the losses to the Raiders starting with the '76 AFC Championship
@@fjr70 The Steelers should have defeated Denver in 1989, not 84. The 89 Steelers were a real young up and coming team with guys like Lake, Lloyd, Woodson, John Jackson, and Dermontti Dawson. The 84 Steelers had young players with no future.
Coaching by Chuck noll at his finest against a superior talented team that won the SB the year before! Only if they picked up Mario the year before, might have won another SB that year .
The track around the football field in this key game was the setting earlier that year for Carl Lewis’ 100 yard dash victory and Mary Decker’s fall in the 3000. The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat in the 1984 Summer Olympics.
Loved listening to John Brodie. Underrated announcer.
Agree.
Thanks so much for posting this one. Boy, the Steelers really pounded those guys, must have had over 200 yards rushing. I remember this game, and wanting to watch it, but couldn't (got stuck with the useless Chiefs-Chargers game that afternoon - didn't have the internet or NFL Redzone in 1984, so you were at the mercy of whenever NBC flashed scores on the screen to keep updated). When I saw Steelers were up 3-0 at halftime, I knew we were gonna win this game and make the playoffs. Beating the Raiders of that era in that place was a monumental accomplishment in those days, especially after the Raiders had killed them the year before in the playoffs. Like the win over SF in week 7, I always thought that this was one of the best non-SB wins in Steelers history.
I agree with you 1,000%.
fun fact: this was the Steelers 1st ever win at the Los Angeles memorial coliseum. having gone 0-7 against the Rams and losing the previous year to the Raiders. 0-8 all-time heading into this game
1. This win and the SF win.
2. The SNF in Houston in 88.
3. The "revenge game " in Cleveland in 1989 ( which imo led to the Baltimore Ravens).
Thank you for posting this. Steelers had a really good first drive and then Malone throws that horrible pass.
Weegie Thompson should be in hall of fame.
I forgot about him until now! Wow how time and memory gets you to forget such great players like WT
I watch a lot of videos of old NFL games, and I love reading the comments of all the old football fans who remember these games/were there.
Good game I was 11 years old that year
RIP Terry Long #74 former Green Beret and Tunch Ilkin
Thank You so very much for posting this game. I LOVE IT VERY, VERY MUCH.
Me 2 👍
Raiders were given B.S. touchdown. Should have been Steeler shutout 13-0.
Thanks for uploading!
This victory was Pittsburgh's 2nd REGULAR SEASON road win over the Raiders since 1973.
and their 1st win ever at the Los Angeles memorial coliseum, previously going 0-7 against the Rams and losing the year before to the Raiders.
3rd! 1974 AFC championship. 24-13 Steelers.
@G.R.X. Racer-1 Please read it again...I said regular season, not including the playoffs. Steelers are 5-11 on the road against the Raiders since 1970, which includes 1-3 in the playoffs (1973, 1974, 1976, 1983). Steelers haven't defeated the Raiders on the road since 1995
I was at that game. There were more fights in the stands than on the field. In fact, a fight ensued directly in front of my eyes during the game.
L.A Raider fans were a dangerous, violet bunch. not sure what year it was, but a Raider fan beat a Steeler fan until he was brain dead and nobody intervened, just watched it happen.
@@bconni2
1990, when the Steelers visited the Raiders at the Los Angeles Coliseum, The Steelers Fan that got beat senseless was from Arizona, his name was Paul Albrecht.
Yes the Cincinnati Bengals and their fans saw another 38 to 10 victory for the Raiders! But people forgot that the Steelers were the only team to put a 1 in the lost column for the S.F 49ers in 1984! The Steelers were the only team in 84 to beat the EVENTUAL and DEFENDING World Champions both on the ROAD!!!
and 1984 was the first season in which the Steelers finally won a game at the Los Angeles memorial coliseum, previously going 0-7 vs the Rams and losing the year before to the Raiders. 0-8 heading into this game and 2-10 lifetime at the coliseum. Pitts always had a hard time in that stadium.
On B.S. pass interference call on Niners.
@@g.r.x.racer-1737 The Raiders TD in this game was B.S! The Steelers overcame it!
@@g.r.x.racer-1737Boo hoo
I remember this game... Nick Bono-whatever of Inside the NFL declared this the "bye bye game for the Steelers..."
That served to motivate them to beat the Raiders and it even helped fuel the next game at Denver IN the playoffs....
Nick Bono wore a Steeler hat after this game on Inside the NFL!
"Road to the super bowl, 1984" showed a clip of this game at 2:19:33. The Bengals needed the steelers to lose, to make the playoffs. Bengals coach Sam Wyche and a few of his players were watching the game at wyche's house
The last pass caught in the great career of Raider WR Cliff Branch (21) at 1:01:00. He wouldn’t catch any more passes after this. He was elected posthumously to the Hall of Fame in 2022.
Jay Randolph filled in for Marv Albert.
the dokie williams game! this led to the nfl going to reply a couple years later on the bogus td call

Tackle eligible with #62 Tunch Ilkin who died this week of ALS complications. RIP

fun fact: heading into this game, Steelers were 0-8 all-time at the Los Angeles memorial coliseum , having gone 0-7 against the Rams and losing the previous year to the Raiders. Pitts always had a hard time at the coliseum. 2-10 lifetime.
I remembered the Rams beating the Steelers 3 times in the 70’s, 1971 at Pittsburgh, 1975 and 1978 at Los Angeles.
I watched this game and couldn't believe the Raiders lost. It cost them home field advantage in the Wild Card game.
If Plunkett starts, the Raiders win this one and the Bengals go to Denver for the divisional round. That also means the Raiders host the Seahawks instead of having to go to the Kingdome. Biggest winner of this game was Miami, who did not want to see the Raiders under any circumstances.
marc wilson cost the raiders the afc crown the next season with an absolutely horrible performance against the patriots in the divisional round
Probably true, the Raiders had the Dolphins' number throughout much of the late 70's and 80's. Raiders had beaten them in Miami already in 1984. Steelers were the opposite, able to beat Raiders, 49ers and Broncos on the road but could not handle Marino at home in regular season or on road in AFC title game. Strange how it was a triangle. Dolphins built to beat Steelers, Raiders built to beat Dolphins and Steelers built to beat Raiders.
Never did understand why Flores and Davis went with Wilson after Plunk wins them 2 Super Bowls in 4 seasons.
@@danielboom72 You mean Flores had to take orders from Davis to start Wilson.
@@BAYAREA-kd1ig lol...imagine that
The game that ended the bengals season
Go go Merriweather
Should have started Plunkett
Real football again this is great!
I AGREE with you 1,000% because this was when football was football. The NFL is now CRAP & isn't worth watching anymore.
@@kevinjohnson4599 No and I do not waste my time with the modern nfl. I have better things to do. Good news is there are old games you can watch like here
@@kevinjohnson4599 Trump Arena underwear. USFL uniforms. Greedy owners and players!
Two proud franchises
Two Suck Quarterbacks
Well I think Plunkett came in at some point so 2 suck quarterbacks and one good one. But I always liked Mark Malone. Good analyst.
This is when you could really rush a QB.
Finally
The Raiders receiver Dokie Williams #85 caught the td pass (2:12:10)with his right foot inbounds and his left foot clearly out of bounds. The refs took a shutout away from Pittsburgh.
Looked like he was pushed out, so good call.
#41 for the Steelers did get his had on him, but the receiver's own momentum took him out of bounds. The receiver never reacted from being pushed from behind
That sounds like a fair summary.@@keithclark7266
Steelers had nothing to lose if they had drafted Marino, even if Bradshaw had gotten his elbow well enough to play a few more seasons. If Marino turned out to be a bust, Noll could always argue "How can you pass up the local college kid who put up those kind of numbers?"
The Raiders TD wasn't even legit, good thing the Steelers won anyway.
Should've drafted Marino
No shitt... 26 teams should have taken him
Which team? They both should and could have. Gabe Rivera for the Steelers and Don Mosebar for the Raiders. Rivera might've been a good NT if he hadn't gotten in to his car accident. RIP.
Yep a lot of teams missed out
Was Brodie drunk ? Unable to identify the correct player several times. Maybe his eyesight wasn't too good ?
Louis Lipps sink ships. Walter Abercrombie and Fitch.
Raiders home cooking from refs w their only td. Embarrassing
I hate Marc Wilson the same as 40 years ago. Worst Raiders QB by 10 miles
The following week Raiders were beat 13-7 in Seattle, wild card round. And were Dominated at the line on both sides of the ball. Kind of like watching the same game twice. Ugly end of the year for the Defending Champs
What happen to their lines
