It was a matchup of two old neighbors who have combined to win four of the last five Super Bowls. But only the San Francisco 49ers looked like a possible champion today. The Raiders seemed to be a team lost between Oakland and Los Angeles, or at least between the 20s.
The 49ers defense allowed the Raiders inside the 20-yard line only once and defeated Los Angeles, 34-10, in front of a sellout crowd of 87,006 at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
To make matters worse for the Los Angeles Raiders (1-2), quarterback Jim Plunkett suffered a separated left shoulder when Jeff Stover sacked him with about 10 minutes left in the game. The Raiders said Plunkett, who is right-handed, would be out for at least six weeks. He was to be hospitalized tonight for observation, but it was not known if he would require surgery.
As he has done in the past, Marc Wilson will step in for Plunkett at quarterback.

This was a once in a generation of quality players whose likes, we will never see again. Football from the 80's was far better than the stuff today.

@socalminstrel The blocking tackling and hitting are far superior in the 70s 80s 90s. The stunts and pulls back then are beautiful to watch. Defense way better back then. Passing offense and the kicking game are much better nowadays as well as clock management. But thats part of the problem with the modern game. They try so hard to minimize turnovers its just boring.
+@socalminstrel Tom Brady would not last 2 months in 70,s or 80,s. Uniforms stink! Look like cheap U.S.F.L. Trump arena underwear. Rather watch World Soccer cup than modern N.F.L. Greedy owners and free agency have destroyed N.F.L. Still remember when it was a game.
@socalminstrel The reason the offenses seem so much better is because the league has castrated the defenses. Back in those days a great defense held opponents to 225 points a season, now it's 300 points and that's considered a great defense.
The game that sadly ended Jim Plunkett's career. Haven't had the intestinal fortitude to watch this since the day I watched it live. Thank you for posting
He had a big stretch of 5 wins in a row as a starter in 86 the next year. Then the team stunk it up down the stretch with the league lead in sacks allowed if I remember right. That led to Al drafting left tackle bust John Clay in the offseason
The way Plunkett got drove in to the ground. No way Brady and Mahomes plays same style they played in that NFL.
I was at this game. Lived in LA but a 49ers fan. The stadium was half 49ers fan. The LA Coliseum was an awesome place to see when at capacity. Both teams loaded with stars of the past.

This was one of very few 9'er games that wasn't blacked out, which included both NFC playoff games from the year before.
I watched some of this game, then I had to leave for work...
I'm here watching now because I keep hearing the alleged leg-whipping by the 9'er O-Line that Madden kept propagandizing, and this was pointed out to be one of the games that they did it to Howie Long.

during the time the Raiders were in LA, their rivalry with the 49ers, even though it only was played once every three years, was defined by the differences between Northern and Southern California - much like the 49ers' rivalry with the Rams
My 49ers who were Defending Supef Bowl champs kick the Raiders ass 34-10 in L.A. Great memories....

Bill Walsh was an assistant coach for the Raiders in the 60s
Jim Plunkett was the quarterback for the 49ers in 1976
Rick Ellison, Ronnie Lott, and Roger Craig played for the Raiders in 1991
And Jerry Rice played for the Raiders near the end of his career. This was his rookie season and was vulnerable to fumbling after the catch for his first couple of years.

The good/great teams always had athletes on both sides of the ball..nowadays especially combined with all the rule changes it seems too slanted toward offense

Me too. By 1985 I was living in the SF Bay area, finishing a masters degree, after living in the City since the 1970's. San Franciscans waited a long time for Bill Walsh and Joe Montana, and there was so much talent on that team - Keena Turner, and Ronnie Lott running the defense with greatness in the middle, and some monsters on the front line, like Fred Dean. Montana and his many great receivers catching astounding passes, including the rookie receiver from Mississippi State. The Niners won 3 or 4 of their 5 Superbowls that decade, and they had tough competition in the Raiders, Dallas, New York, Miami, Chicago, Philly -- those are a few that come to mind. I don't follow NFL anymore, but it's a great opportunity to see some of these old games again, cleaned up nicely w/o commercials.
The 49ers and Raiders will always be rivals. These were the 2 dominant teams in the 1st half of the 80s. 4 of the 5 titles were won by these 2 teams.

Great post, even though the 49ers kicked our butts. I remember this being a hyped game. Wonder why Madden and Summerall weren't on it considering it was the last two Super Bowl champions.
Walker, director at KPIX at that point, had it in his contract I believe, as best I remember from reading it on 506 and Classic Sports years ago, that's why he and Stockton also did Bears/49ers weeks later
He had also been Frank Glieber's partner the year prior, and lost that when he died, so I guess this was him keeping in the loop
CBS briefly altered its usual announcing tiers in the first half of 1985. Pat Summerall and John Madden worked Giants games in 8 of the first 9 weeks, with the only exception being Week 5 when Cowboys-Giants was an ABC Sunday Night game. Summerall was calling the US Open in Week 1, so Verne Lundquist and Madden called Eagles-Giants. Dick Stockton and Wayne Walker called 49ers games in 6 of the first 7 weeks; they had Week 5 off, and Summerall-Madden called 49ers-Falcons. Stockton-Walker called 2 main 4 pm doubleheader games that involved the 49ers-this Week 3 game at the LA Raiders, and Week 6 versus the Bears. Starting with Week 10, CBS went back to its traditional tier system. Summerall-Madden called Cowboys-Washington that week and the Bears’ massacres of the Cowboys and Falcons in Weeks 11-12-the latter ushering in a period when they called a lot of Bears’ games, after only infrequently doing so in the past unless the Bears were playing Dallas.
Tom Brookshier was Wayne Walker’s partner the previous year. Frank Glieber was partnered with Dick Vermeil.

LOVE classic Raider games but this was really hard to watch...glad we rebounded to go 12-4 and win the division!

I was at this game as a 49er fan coming down from the Bay Area. This was the highlight of the year as the Niners went on to lose three of their next four games and struggled to a 10-6 season.
Sad note from the game is that three players, 49ers Dwight Clark and Raiders Mickey Marvin and Derrick Jensen have all died of ALS.
That loss to the Saints at home the week after beating the Raiders was hideous.

The closest game to occur after the 1983 season when it was almost these 2 teams playing in the super bowl. Im sure looking back most would pick the raiders would have won but this game here makes me think maybe not.

This was the Howie Long-Bobb McKittrick game, when Howie confronted the 49ers OL coach in the tunnel after the game about the 49ers' cut blocks.

1:39:43 check out #78 NT Manu Tuiasosopo make the key block that made the play for the fumble recovery score by Milt McColl. Manu deserved more credit for that heads up play that prevented contact while McColl was down. That play was the beginning of the end for the Raiders.

So these two teams between them had won four of the previous five Super Bowls? Wow. That's domination. No wonder there was so much build up for this game. In the previous five NFL seasons, then, it paid to be either a Raider fan, a 49er fan, or a Redskin fan. That's it. Just those 3 teams out of the then 28 team NFL. If you were a fan of any of the other 25 NFL teams, during that five year period, your team got left out in the cold. Five years is a long time.

Can,t believe Broncos lost twice to this Raider team with Marc Wilson in overtime 1985. Shameful. 11-5 missed playoffs. Browns 8-8 made playoffs. Even more shameful.
They did make the playoffs they lost to the Patriots in the division finals

In the first half they missed an illegal block in the back on a Raider lineman, and a late hit out of bounds on Dokie Williams. The latter costs the Raiders 3 points. Then later in the half a very dubious roughing the passer call on Alzado costs them another 3 points
