The Razer Stargazer webcam looks amazing on paper, but does it hold up in reality? It has some impressive specs, such as 1080p resolution at 30fps, and 720p at 60fps, a higher frame-rate than you'd normally see in a webcam. It also boasts dynamic background removal using Intel's Realsense technology to separate you from the background with depth sensors. It kind of works, but isn't anything to write home about. So is this webcam perform as good as the specs suggest? Not so much, due to major software issues.

I had high hopes for this webcam, but it was sadly a disappointment because of poor software. Luckily the Logitech C922 is arriving soon, so hopefully that will be better. Stay tuned.
Any idea when you'll have the review for the C922 ready and/or a comparison against the C920?
Please do a comparison with the C922
what ur plans on this Joe tech
Probably Saturday at the soonest
ThioJoe wow
What camera did you use to make this video equality on that camera is far better than a web camera
Would have been nice to see an update to this using Cortex and Razer's game caster software. I have been slowly purchasing Razer steaming peripherals. All i have left is this camera to purchase. I noticed in other videos where reviewers had issues with the Ripsaw and Seiren I had nonoe of the same issues using Cortex and the Razer streaming software. Thank you for the review. I doubt i will ever use OBS or any other game caster since moving to a full Razer ecosystem.
Try wrapping the entire unit with tin foil (not aluminum) cut out the holes for the camera and this will literally double the performance of this device
It basically trangenerates the currency blocked by the outer shell of the unit
The science part is not important
Never tried it, make sure you make a tutorial if it does
Try aluminum instead of tin
That should be fine
For the price of the Stargazer you could buy the C922, a green screen, and still have $20-$30 left to buy a cheap microphone.
I agree
bro...
you found your way
may the force be with the you
but for real
it's the best path for this channel
in other words keep up the good work
and give us more videos like this
have*
What camera did you use to film this video, it has amazing image quality!
"Video cut-out occasionally"
Don't worry, it's just the NSA PRISM spyware updating in the background....
Thanks for the great review!
Hey ThioJoe - What camera are you using for your video? Looks really good.
What camera/mic did you use to make your videos?
This is a great review, I like that you focus on the software and workarounds as well. A lot of people don't go that deep. This is important when I buy tech, software problems are a deal breaker. I also enjoy the polls in the videos.
what cam do you use for this video?
Yeah, I bought the camera with High Hopes as well. I then bought the C922 to do a direct comparison. The video I tried to make with them DID NOT GO WELL so it never came out because of the issues you mentioned. The C922 I then compared to the C920...managed to get them to look ALMOST IDENTICAL but the C922 had slightly better clarity. Still buggy though. Both cameras came out at the same time, and both seem to have been rushed in some manner software wise.
Ultimately I'm sending back the Stargazer and hanging onto the C922 in hopes they fix the software. But if you're wondering, The Personify background removal vs the Stargazer's 3D tech, the Stargazer does the background removal way better than the C922...and that's saying something considering the Stargazers isn't that fantastic to begin with.
+ThioJoe the only reason I bought it was to scan 3D objects for the game I'm making (I've yet to receive it). So the whole review was giving me bad hopes until you took only 3 seconds out of your 9 minute video (at 8:25 to 8:28 ) to say it's actually what I'm looking for. I would've liked to see a review or capability on that before trying it out myself. bummer.
I'm really liking these actual tech videos. Very entertaining and very good production quality. I still think LTT is better but you cover different topics and different tech which is nice. If you keep making videos I'll keep watching.
Not sure if troll or serious...
Alright I know when people say it's a serious video it can be taken as sarcasm or trolling but it's serious trust me he said it was gonna be a non-satire channel now
what camara did you use for this video??
I can't tell if this us a legit review because it's on the TJ channel.
you run through your points quickly, which is nice.
i found the portion where you show the device in action to be the most valueable.
personally i would have used the stargazer for all of this vid's audio and video, instead of just a portion.
however, you barely glossed over a core feature: 3d scanning.
after seeing your review, i have no idea if its what im looking for or not.
while i realize this review style is: 'lets look at xyz';
id much prefer a format where you compare all the available similar products and declare a best value and best performance winners.
cheers mate.
Compared to even just the C920 (not the C922) it just fails to get the clarity and color. You can notice when you can't see certain things on his skin etc, the C922 and C920 do a perfect job even offering decent quality for a nice camera before getting a real one.
Have had zero issues with it! It's incredible! 5930k GTX 980.
Please make a video on how to modify a $6 webcam to perform like Razer Stargazer with all its bells and whistles!
The C992x Pro webcam is the best. It has a 720p option which is a great 1280x720 resolution with 60 FPS which is super smooth and incredible. If you want to downgrade your video quality to 30 FPS but increase resolution, you can get an even better 1080p resolution or 1920x1080 resolution with 30 FPS. It is only $99 and is better than a $149 Razer Stargazer.
It's quite a failure on Razer's part that you had to actually go and download the additional software from Intel. That's something that should automatically come with the product or install at the same time as the Razer software.
I think everything I buy from Amazon is using your affiliate link (or almost everything). I started using it at least a year ago, so I've bought a good $3,000 worth of stuff from Amazon since then. I don't know how much of a cut you get, but I hope it's helping out.
I loved your tech video's but thought the comedy was hit or miss. Glad to see an emphasis on tech on this channel, with more of your focus on them as well. Good job ThioJoe.
Well you are supposed to use the pro version of razer cortex gamecaster tho, and the controls in there and the software itself makes the webcam much more customizable and better.
Its much better than xplit and you wont need all those other programs you mentioned
What camera did you use to record this review video? The quality looks great.
Joe, i really like your overviews and thank you for posting!
why didn't you mention that it could be used with windows hello features? like unlocking your computer. I don't know myself but it should work in theory considering it had Intel real sense
Gotta love having a high-end webcam, but having absolutely NO means to control the exposure, white balance, framerate, or any of that stuff. You get automatic settings and that's it. Fantastic.
Bought 2 of these, but both broke down after a few months. Pity, they were a great webcam but not worth it for a 3 - 4 month life expectancy - can't recommend - Running with the Brio which is not as nice and is slower with Windows hello, but at least it is reliable (for now)
i like how you are making actual video's that help your community , i subbed
Could you review the "EDTracker"? It's a headtracker with an inbuilt gyroscope... pretty fun tech for gaming, I'm considering buying one but at the price it seems like something I should think twice about.
Very very well done on the up front transparency.
What camera did you use to make this video???? :o
JustJordan i was thinking the same thing
some canon probarbly
How come you didn't talk about how it works with Windows Hello? Easily the most appealing feature of this camera for me. Does it work well on it?
which camera do you you bro for the recording ?
i just bought that camera, and i also have to search for the drivers, im so dissapointed with the 3d scanning, recording at 1080p it's fine with the windows 10 capture app, but i don't know why doesn't have their own apps. I think is near to trash in the scale. btw, witch is your camera actually using to make this video? have you a review?
Hi, is Intel 6th generation CPU really needed for this camera to work? It says so in requirements.
Thanks! Nice video!
Good thing I didn't hold out when they announced this thing back around February.
I use a green screen, looking for vid quality, bad experiences with Logitech, recommend the Stargazer???
Is this valid in india?
Loved the list at the beginning. Everyone's video showed include it. Very good vid.
Can I ask what camera & lens you're using to film this video? The non webcam parts :)
hey joe you know of any lights that can be mounted on top of a monitor i dont have room to place lights anywhere else
What cam did you use shoot this video review? And what microphone did you use. I'm trying to learn what to do.
I recently got one and gotta agree. It is a good quality camera but the software is a bit lacking. Basically the software just needs to catch up.
It's good to have a new/fresh product reviewer on the market. I also catch MKBHD
What kinda of camera are you using to record your sessions?
Probably Canon EOS 5D.
Hi Joe.
I have the stargazer for a long time but never noticed it could do depth and backgroundremoval.
I am trying to install the two link you filmed but then i only get the option to uninstall.
Lately when i look at my device manager something has changed.
The depth driver is no longer installed at the cam.
Is there any way you can help me?
I hope to get the 3dscanning and backgroundremoval online.
in 2018 the stargazer is trash, but what did you expect from Razer? for a high quality webcam consider the Logitech Brio or the C920/ C922
i like the idea of a detachable cable on webcams.
What microphone you use Joe? I need a very good one for streaming and Im not sure what to chose
Would it be possible for you to maybe test the dynamic background removal in a variety of different scenarios of backgrounds
Did you upload this to the wrong channel…?
No I will be doing real tech on this channel from now on
oh gosh I have no idea if I'm supposed to take you seriously rn
+ThioJoe I'm so happy about that Thio, because even if basically no video was real till now, I enjoyed every episode I watched and they were in HQ and sometimes funny. Probably I wouldn't even think about all those ideas you had to make the videos in a funny and "false" way. I hope that I explained myself as good as possible but as I already wrote in another comment, my English is not really good ! Congrats for 1Mill
0:42 what kind of camera do use? (don't use the razer... impossible lol) thx
what camera you used to recored this review* it looks great. thanks
from his upper chest to the top of his head i like a gradient from white to light tan
That freeze is a very common and annoying thing in synapse
That's a shame, it's the biggest issue I had with it.
Does it work on windows 9
Radin Molai-shargh yes
TheCasualSpectre Lmao! 💀
I want to know your camera and mic set up... and green screen?
Isn't the new Logitech c922 the same thing?
It does it differently, not using Realsense but some sort of algorithm to separate the background
I'm surprised you still reply to people
Serious video... FROM THIOJOE?? At least I like this video more than the other ones
I'd drink a beer with Thio. Or maybe 2 beers.
Would the background removal be good for taking passport photos?
Will they ship it to India?
who else had the video on 144p and thought "damn it's that bad"?
Thanks for uploading so quick Joe!
I have this Intel technology on my notebook, for now it is just for windows hello, where I can find apps for it, it has 3 cameras like this one, the only app that comes with it is 3d me which is just for fun no real use. Unless you're a kid
so is this main channel replacing thio joe tech?
Hello ThioJoe. Despite this webcam's shortcomings, I really wanted to try it, so I bought one. I'm not worried about green screen stuff or background removal or whatever... I just wanted a webcam capable of 60 FPS. However, it seems this webcam doesn't work on Windows 7. So I upgraded to Windows 10. Despite plugging the camera into a USB 3.0 port, the camera doesn't work. Windows can't find it. Error is 0x00F4244(0xC00D36D5) It does show up in Razer Synapse, so it definitely exists.
I tried searching online, but there is literally no support or help anywhere to be found. I'm just trying to get it to work, and if I don't get it to work soon, I am going to return it. How did you get it to work in the first place?
Windows 10 ended up breaking itself and I went back to Windows 7. I'm returning the webcam. It's trash.
how do i know what video i should take seriously?
so the background removal thing only works on 6th gen cpu?
Do you know how to zoom in with the cam? am trying to stream with OBS and it is so zoom out am like a tiny man in the cam instead of aiming close to my face :(
You should review stuff that people are actually willing to buy (mechanical keyboards, screens, graphics cards, etc..), that will probably give you more views
No need to buy this guys u can download it from his site. Very good I play fortnite on this cam daily 1200fps
Hey Joe! What camera/mic set up do you use?
I subscribed for the trolling. What's with this real shit?
The trolling was stale and I hated making them
I heard something about some threats to his well being
I'm glad to see you grew up ThioJoe. Maybe now I can watch your videos and believe what you say.
an bo nah
I was hoping it was just a rumor
so, this is just a better kinect?
Looks dope, can you review the new Logitech C922 webcam?
At 4:32, why does 'device' say Intel RealSense Camera SR300 RGB? I thought you were using a Stargazer.
As I mentioned, the stargazer is basically a rebranded SR300, and even says on the box "powered by Intel SR300". I assume all the internals are the same, or at least just uses the same drivers.
oh ok thx
This review is really funny when you consider that my old iMac from 2006 had background removal that looked like that.
Can you please do a guide to upgrade this to 4K 144+fps maybe using tin foil
is it worth just buying a gopro for streaming?
HAHA Synaps 2.0 is broken af hardly works my razerui keyboard let alone anything else. it's a bloatware.
also Cromakey on OBS = why?
i pay for my xsplit for a reason.
can you put it on the logitech tripod that came with the logitech c922
What Weba cammera is is the best for live stream , your opinion??
I just bought this I am thinking about taking it back now...
what's that thing next to his headphones and headphones stand
OBS has implemented realsense now
I like this, do more reviews but try to keep the thiotech still running
4:40 maybe cause ur using windows xp look at that fuckin background
True
When I plugged Razer Stargazer to my pc it installed the intel drivers automaticlly.
soo.. what cam r u using right now
What are those lights to the left of you, I need them
Which camera are u using Joe?
Very Honest review much appreciated.
I rate it Expensive out of 10
Well put together review, with the trademark high production quality. I'd definitely like to see more of the same in the future.
Also, it looks like Razer Synapse just provides a frontend to that first tab on the standard video settings window that OBS brings up (it's internal to Windows)... Pretty lazy, Razer. Never been a fan of Synapse.
The bad software / drivers is probably the only issue I have with the camera. It barely works half the time.
Runefox
ThioJoe That's about how I found it with my Razer Ouroboros. I ended up replacing it pretty quickly because switching DPI caused it to hitch even while connected via a wire. Thankfully my Ripsaw doesn't need Synapse for anything but controlling the LED on the front.
