- This video contains a reconstructed (or cobbled) and reimagined slice of life scene from Judy Garland's final movie, a documentary called A Day In The Life Of Judy Garland. The intent of the film was to show how Judy prepared for a concert, and the plan was to film her daily activities while on tour. The off stage segments were shot in black and white, and the actual concert was filmed in color. Well into production Judy found the filmmakers in breach of contract and had the project halted. Rumor has it that, unbeknownst to her, Judy was filmed nude, and I speculate that she evoked the non-nudity clause in her contract as breached and used that to cease production of the film. However, a highly edited version of the documentary did appear on Danish television shortly following Judy's death under the title The Last Concert. What aired on television was a badly constructed and incoherent miss mash of scenes randomly spliced together with concert footage from one appearance synced to the sound of another. The master of the television version still exists, but the footage of the full documentary has not been seen (or heard of) in over forty years. Also seen are Judy's husband, Mickey Deans, singer Johnnie Ray, Ray's manager, and acting as Judy's assistant on the tour was Bridget Johanssen, wife of Ingemar, former Heavyweight Champion Of The World. Filmed on March 23, 1969.

She was witty and fun! Not always tragic! She didn't see herself as tragic in spite of her addictions. As a performer she was able to separate herself from,her problems and be a genius.

me just listening to one night in her life, the Carnegie Hall live album is for me a party just listening to it alone! Just imagining how great she felt is almost impossible.
In that performance you could really tell she was having a blast, and its a fact she wasn't on drugs at the time. Her death was a terrible loss and tragic, but as you said, it wasn't what defined her. Thinking about it now I want to find time to listen to it now. Go into my bedroom, turn off the lights ,and put the album on full blast on my big stereo speakers. Makes me feel like I'm right there in the front row lol.
If you haven't already heard all of her albums, I personally find her Capitol albums the finest of her work. The album entitled 'Judy' from 1956 is one of her best IMO. Especially Come Rain Or Come Shine and Anyplace I Hang My Hat Is Home. If I may ask, and I don't judge lol, I am curious as to what you love the most out of her body of recorded works?
she had such an amazing talking voice, so melodious.
Oh yeah! If she had lived longer she could have gone into narrating audio books, documentaries , etc. Imagine Judy reading classic books, or poetry! Maybe even with some music playing lightly in the background to fit whatever she was reading. She could easily have been like Morgan Freeman and reinvented her career.
Judy's natural ear for harmony was amazing! She just slides right into those notes.
Judy was only 46 here, not 47. This was shot in March, 1969 only 3 months before she died. I love her humor and wit when he gives her the little rabbit fur purse. Sad that in 3 months she would be dead.

There was one man who didn't and that was Mickey Rooney.
She never lost her optimism and zest for life....she's full of it in the beginning. It reminds of the banter she would have with Mickey Rooney in their MGM movies
Oh yes that zest for life was amazing, it never left her. She's an inspiration to me in that sense. Her body betrayed her, yes, but she never gave up mentally. That is why she was not a tragedy. She was a hero.💪
So fascinating. She really lived a long life in a short amount of time. From the 1920s to the 1960s is quite the change from anything we will experience in our lifetime.
And even greater change from the time of her death in 1969 to now. She wouldn’t recognize anything today.
Yea! So much happed in such a small frame of time, she was born in an era where this country was still living like the 17 and 18 hundreds, the more I read about her and hear her stories I'm becoming a Judy Garland Fan, I've only seen the wizard of oz, but after seeing all of this wonderful footage of her I'm gonna have to set aside my Life Long Marilyn Monroe fascination. The one positive aspect about her singing at the end of the video is that it's the 1st & only time I've ever heard her sing off key & forget the lyrics. It clearly wasn't the "true" Judy Garland we've adored throughout her years. She's human & her past performances certainly displayed how brilliant she was & completely overshadows her rare flaws..
I agree with you. She was so gifted, so perfectly on point throughout the majority of her career that her rare off performances are really endearing. Only she could get away with a slip up and have an audience even more drawn in.

Such an amazing piece....it is sad hearing her talk though - gets all ready and into the car and asks "Where are we going?" Her conversation is almost like a child's or an elderly person. It's great to see the audience reception and how they love her!
That is a great observation. She was controlled by people and substance... Even if to were to notice the whole scene with her fixing her bow... She liked it a certain way and he continuously put it back the way he wanted it.. she's Judy Garland for God's sake...the epitome of losing ones self

It is fascinating in spite of the horrible cinematography. I love the Jerome Kern's "Til the Clouds Roll By" duet with Johnny Ray. It's such a beautiful and complicated arrangement. She was still on top of her game.

I just thought of something...wouldn't it be awesome if Judy had narrated recordings of books? Like To Kill A Mockingbird, In Cold Blood...She could have been the Morgan Freeman of her time. I would love to have heard Judy narrating poetry more than anything. I can picture it now , an album "Judy Garland -Music and Words", Opening with music and Judy singing and then reciting beautiful poems, three songs with a similar theme and mood and then a poem to match the mood of the songs With just a touch of piano or flutes and violins in the distance behind her reading....it could have happened! She should have been allowed to try it out.
That would have been awesome. Or sleep stories with her voice - She's been my steady companion since I was 3 - her voice always makes me feel safe and loved when I'm feeling wobbly - isn't it amazing that someone who died before you were even born can make you feel like that your entire life

It's too bad things didn't work out at this point. She'd just remarried, moved to England and was performing. It seemed like a fresh start for her, yet sadly the addiction had taken its tole.

Oh Lord what have I just seen ...Judy did not deserve this disrespect . Was she loved ? Was she not loved or was she just loved to much . How was she failed by so many , just the handful in this video could have said get to a clinic and rest and not in a nasty old smoked up joint ..This woman needed fresh air and oxygen . RIP Judy

The colour footage is suffering from deterioration., but, it can be (SHOULD!) restored, digitally, at least.
Just imagine, "Judy's Folk Album" with her image gracing the cover, with a flower-child look, hair let down, pink yellow blue flowers all in it, and a host of colorful green turquoise jewelry, beads rings, bracelets and earrings.white sundress down to her ankles. Running around behind her musicians take it easy having fun, shirtless playing guitars, drums and some others swimming in the pool below a 30 ft waterfall, Judy looks as if she just stepped away to have a private chat, her feet are in the golden green water , there is hazy sunrise beams of light striking the water through the the trees illuminating it , and Judy being in the water has one arm hugging a limb of a flowering tree, the other grasping her dress in a fist keeping it dry.
When she was riding in the car, she looked like she did in A Star is Born when she was riding in Norman Maine’s car
It just hit me. Her husband, Mickey Deans , looks like Roman Polanski the way HE looked at this time.Judy died in June, 3 months after this film was made. Sharon Tate died in August, just 2 months later. Sad for both of them.

It seems that she was nice everyone except executives and directors because thats the only people I heard she ever had problems with but then again she wasn't always treated the best by executives in her early life that make sense tbh
Many of them didn’t know how to handle her, so they lost patience with her. Her illness magnified her fears and insecurities and made her difficult to work with, which, in turn, made it difficult for the folks who worked with her to do their jobs.
I was able to purchase Mickey's book on Judy "Weep No More My Lady" hard cover and signed... half way through... so far nothing new however he writes very tenderly of her yet this film disturbs me ... exploited once again is what I am thinking :(

She couldn’t even walk on her own at this point. Her organs were failing and she was slowly dying. With every pill she took was a minute closer to her death. Too bad this woman couldn’ take care of herself and that idiot of a husband cared more about making money off her than admitting her to a hospital!
This video was filmed on my 3rd birthday. Strange to think I can see what someone I hold such affection for was doing that same day, so many years later.
Such a cheerful, sincere spirit even to the end. Clearly she was physically ill. If she weighed 80 pounds, here, I would have been surprised. Still, she was more than capable of shining her special light for an audience. Glad her last concerts were successful, well-received endeavors in respectable venues in Copenhagen and not in some sleazy club or something similar. Don’t think she would have lived a whole lot longer regardless of the accidental OD on June 10, ‘69. She was perilously frail and some illness, it seems, would have claimed the sadly damaged genius sooner, rather than later. The idea of filming a day in her life before a concert (and including a concert), however, would have been a great one … if anyone with an ounce of documentary talent had planned it properly and filmed it with insight and sensitivity. Could have been a powerful project.

Certain people used her right up till the very end didn't they?. This to me is sadder than sad to watch her in her poor physical condition. I think we all adored her from the OZ movie and her and Andy Rooney movies they made together. Yeap,,,,today's so called talented people can't hold a candle to her, in her prime. I wish she could have grown older and had better health, but that's not how life works sometimes is it?.

Whether she saw her life as tragic or not, it was tragic. Used and abused, drug addict. It is terrible what her mother and the studios did to this woman. When you see an addict strung out on the streets, you think, tragic, but if you have talent and enough PR around you, it's a wonderful life? So sad...

She was only 46.. She literally looks twice her age. It's a shame what her mother made her a drug addict at early childhood. Hollywood was no better. Unions were made to protect someone from working 18 hour days. It's too bad nobody tried to help her. All everyone seemed to do was take from her.
