1969 SPECIAL REPORT: "THE FUNERAL OF JUDY GARLAND"

  • New York City on 26 June, where an estimated 20,000 people lined up to pay their respects at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel in Manhattan, which remained open all night long to accommodate the overflowing crowd. On 27 June, James Mason gave a eulogy at the funeral, an Episcopal service led by the Rev. Peter Delaney of St Marylebone Parish Church, London, who had officiated at her marriage to Deans, three months earlier.
    "Judy's great gift", Mason said in his eulogy, "was that she could wring tears out of hearts of rock.... She gave so richly and so generously, that there was no currency in which to repay her." The public and press were barred. She was interred in a crypt in the community mausoleum at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York, a small town 24 miles (39 km) north of midtown Manhattan.
    Upon Garland's death, despite having earned millions during her career, her estate came to US$40,000 (equivalent to $282,287 in 2020). Years of mismanagement of her financial affairs by her representatives and staff along with her generosity toward her family and various causes resulted in her poor financial situation at the end of her life.
    In her last will, signed and sealed in early 1961, Garland made many generous bequests that could not be fulfilled because her estate had been in debt for many years. Her daughter, Liza Minnelli, worked to pay off her mother's debts with the help of family friend Frank Sinatra.
    In 1978, a selection of Garland's personal items were auctioned off by her ex-husband Sidney Luft with the support of their daughter Lorna and their son Joe. Almost 500 items, ranging from copper cookware to musical arrangements, were offered for sale. The auction raised US$250,000 (equivalent to $991,964 in 2020) for her heirs.
    At the request of her children, Garland's remains were disinterred from Ferncliff Cemetery in January 2017 and re-interred 2,800 miles (4,500 km) across the country at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles.

    Sad. At least her family allowed fans to walk through and see her, pay their respects. All she ever did was work work work and accomplish things since age 2. She made some poor choices in her private life, but I wonder if she ever had a prayer of surviving. I mean, when your own mother and a massive Hollywood studio system get you hooked on speed as a child in order to keep the cash flowing in, what are a person’s chances, realistically? And the men who robbed her blind are hopefully stewing in Hades. Her accomplishments are unbelievable for such a short life. She conquered every medium: cinema; stage; television; records; radio; Broadway. RIP.

  • @markxoc
    @markxoc Před rokem +2

    Never was there such a hard working explosive bundle of unlimited talent! Judy Garland worked professionally for 45 of her 47 years! From a toddler she was expected to produce! Read the hands of her family and agents demoralized her and made her feel that everything she did was in vain because she was never able to feel any of the riches that she produced. Finally she got so depressed she turned to alcohol and substances to get from one day to the next! Many people became multi millionaires from Judy’s work but Judy never saw any of it! She felt hopeless!! I watched her sing a dramatic ballad Days before she passed away and I saw a tear in her left eye as she drilled down into that song with everything she had! It was obvious something in that song touched her.

  • @markxoc
    @markxoc Před rokem +4

    Her daughter Liza Minnelli was on a talk show one time and she said they stayed at hotels and her mother had no money whatsoever! The hotel simply assumed assumed Judy was a millionaire and would pay when she checked out show they extended unlimited credit to her. When it was time to leave because the management was starting to ask questions about settling the bill. Liza said they would just leave like they were going shopping but they would get into a cab and then after they pulled away a few hundred feet they would ask the cab driver to go back and get the one sutecase and bring it down to the cab! After that they would go to another five star hotel and chicken strictly on her name. And start all over again. While her mother was in the room at every hotel she was on the phone searching for money from friends and fans.

    We will always remember you with love, nostalgia!! We never forget what leaves a mark on our lives!!! Your innocence in the wizard of oz will always be remembered, your entire legacy and most importantly we will not forget you!!
    Rest in peace beloved Judy!!

    I remember this day as if it were yesterday. I was 9 and on the front porch of my house when my mother came to the front door from the kitchen where she was washing dishes while listening to the radio. Her face was ashen gray, as though she saw a ghost. She told my father that Judy Garland was found dead in London and then they both broke down in tears. After they expressed their grief, my mother commented to my father that when they had recently seen her on TV on some late night talk show that she appeared to be inebriated and my mother speculated that it was alcohol and drugs that did her in. She said it was such an enormous tragedy as there was no one like her and there never will be.
