JUDY GARLAND Her Never Broadcast Final Interview Uncut 1969

  • On March 26, 1969 Judy Garland and her husband, Mickey Deans, were interviewed for Radio Denmark by Hans Vangkilde. The interview was packaged with Judy's latest concert, recorded in Copenhagen the previous evening. Deans felt that he and Vangkilde hit it off well enough that he was bold enough to ask the interviewer to take Judy back to his own home for the night while Deans pursued business interests in Sweden. Finding a moment when Judy was feeling relaxed and talkative, Vankilde turned on his tape recorder and conducted a second, more personal, interview with Judy. Here is that second, never broadcast, interview in it's entirety.

Deans was an opportunist and poor Judy placed her trust in him just the way she did with all her husbands and MGM. Never understood how these men would use her the way they did. All the poor woman wanted, was for someone to love her the way she loved them and protect her. I think that if her beloved father hadn’t passed away so young in Judy’s life, things may have been much different. I read that she was quoted as saying when her father died, “Now, nobody, is on my side”. Sad because she was such a treasure that this world sadly lost so young. God bless you dear lady. ❤️

Ah, now I know why Judy didn’t bring up her children in interviews and on talk shows. I’d already figured hosts and media had been instructed not to comment or ask about them - except for the occasional compliment about Liza’s successes. You can tell here she was uncomfortable, but extremely proud of them and probably would’ve liked to sing their praises more, but she believed it was an invasion of their personal privacy and boundaries, particularly for teenagers. I think many stars during her time felt that way or they didn’t want their children on people’s minds for fear of their safety. Boy, has that changed.

i think it's because the last few things we've seen of her in this period of her life are mainly performances where she would have taken things to steady her nerves and the long term effects will have confused her. When she was relaxed and comfortable she sounded absolutely fine and barely even stammered. you can see even when she was clean when she was pregnant she would stammer dreadfully so i think a lot of the 'mess' people see and make fun of her about is her anxiety and being so desperate to be liked and to please she ties herself up in knots and everything comes out in a jumble.

Her mom truly truly failed her by not teaching her the importance of managing personal finances. She kept her financially illiterate so she could take advantage of her and thus she set her up to be exploited by others. Judy thought that handling money was “not feminine”

@stevers62. If you’re correct, then I completely understand how a famous person can easily end up with thieves and backstabbers in their circle. This guy was really convincing - acting like he liked her and was on her side. Same as everyone else would’ve acted when they met her, so how could she possibly know who was genuine and who wasn’t until they ripped her off or backstabbed her. It’s no wonder so many celebrities end up filing lawsuits against their managers and accountants for stealing from them. Judy was extremely fond of Jack Paar and considered him a great friend, but he was anything but. He pretended to adore her so she’d tell him unflattering stories about other celebrities - like she’d do when she appeared on his show. But he’d ridicule her behind her back. (Paar was a bitter failed actor, seething with jealousy and envy of those who’d become famous.). To me, fame just isn’t worth it.

I found the introduction. I’m not positive it is this man, but it really sounds like him. He also adds “bourbon” to the list in the concert introduction. Very strange how Mickey her husband according to Judy in this interview, wanted her to wear a mini skirt when she was freezing 🥶 and had a coughing fit. This interview is unassumingly revealing. Her last husband seemed to be getting a strange sick thrill of seeing her frail skinny legs( at this time) and her body diminishing slowly. So sad and awful. He should have been investigated. I never knew until now, that she was wearing those short dresses because Mickey wanted her to. She was trying to please him. She also talks about how people stole her money from her TV show and she didn't get paid. A bunch of crooks were surrounding Judy Garland and contributed to her early death. This is shocking!!!

i'm only a few seconds in but ooooh she's a smart one. 'what did you call me? that's not my name you're talking to another lady' i guess if you ask Judy Garland questions Judy Garland will answer. I wonder what answers Frances would give. Judy may have had her fallibilities but she really does seem like she was a wonderful mother. Respecting her kids and allowing them to make up their minds about who they want to be as long as they're good people, not pressuring them to be this or that 'she's not supposed to make up her mind yet she's only 16' it would be nice if all mothers were so considerate of their kids and recognising them as their own individual beings rather than as an extension of themselves.

Unworthy men/husbands/agents took advantage of her unwillingness to fully understand and at least exert final authority over the crucial aspects of her own finances. Simple as that. JG did not want to put in the effort to learn the serious issues of financial management necessary for a “business” of her magnitude. (Yes, she was a human being, first, but also a big “business” unto herself.) At her level, she should have demanded to sign every check. Exhaustion, emotional troubles, and poor judgment in men compromised her ability to do that, but she would have spared herself immeasurable grief if she had summoned the effort to oversee these things or learn how to oversee them. She didn’t. When unethical men saw how lax she was in this regard, they took her to the cleaners. She was a staggeringly well-paid entertainer-the highest paid superstar of her long heyday in many respects. She should have had a nest egg worth multi-millions and even more in solid, aggressively conservative market investments and sensible tax shelters. But … terrible taste in husbands and financial svengalis. Partly her fault, as much as it hurts to admit. Hey, Doris Day and Debbie Reynolds (among others) let men wipe them out, too. Interesting interview, certainly, but the Denmark couple sound like typical vampires, out to butter her up, tell her what she wanted to hear, and make a buck. As for the final husband … oh, Judy, what a dud. 😑 JG was lucid, here, at least until it seems the interviewing couple got much drunker and incoherent. But one can also tell that Judy was very guarded and nervous in this situation, beneath the general bonhomie. Who on earth could blame her?

You also have to take into account society’s gender rules from her generation - men handled the money. Judy didn’t take control over it because it wasn’t “her place” as a lady - and also because she wasn’t equipped with the tools to do so.

The business has always been stacked against the artist unless they write, publish or produce their own music...Most artists were robbed to the tune of millions back then because they didn't know the business, they were talent. Artists who tried to handle the business side were always labeled troublemakers. It is not inconceivable at all that she put her trust in shady managers who used her talent to profit off of because that is how the business is still ran to this day. And in Judy's case, at the end of her life ALL of her income was generated by live appearances so there was a certain degree of desperation to making her appearances.
