Sie Note: Doug Walker DID once watch another show. He watched Adventure Time. Spoiler: It went CATASTROPHICAL! Even worse (in terms of cringe) is that he watched it with a non-youtuber friend of his and the amount and severity of Doug Walker not getting points of roughly 11 minute episodes right next to someone that is not a professional about reviewing stuff and gets it is... is just baffling.
The guy he watched it with was more then once stunned by how Doug did completely miss the point of an episode.

No. What you're suggesting is settle for mediocrity, being superficial. I instead advocate this, keeping in mind we are often talking about multi millionare investment in the art: that particualr I'm "nitpicking" about, using your fallacious term, could have been doctored and thought of, to show care. But it didn't, and pointing it out is an educational tool on how to do better. 3:15- He admitted he had no idea why people found his Ducktales thumbnail creepy, so I guess he saw no problem with this either.
Though when it comes to his problem regarding this film using the liar revealed trope, this is very similar to when he reviewed Chicken Run and somehow failed to notice that the film did something different with it. In the case of Chicken Run, no one pushed Rocky away when they discovered the truth. They also didn't discover it on their own. He left, assuming they would be mad at him after revealing the truth himself. And when he returned, yes, Ginger slapped him, but she did it because he left, not because he lied, and somehow, Doug didn't pick up on this even though the film kinda spells it out. In this case, no one really seemed to resent Rango when they found out the truth. They already saw him do enough heroic acts that it didn't entirely bother them that he lied, and sure enough, when he returns, they're all happy to see him. And like you mentioned, Rango himself had started to believe his own lie, which again is something different. Again, Doug somehow didn't notice this.

    • @bandannadoo
      @bandannadoo Před měsícem +32

If anything, it wasn't about Rango lying to the people, but lying to himself, and it takes someone who IS the guy he says he is, who is an ACTUAL killer, to make him realise that he's nothing like the typical hero. He's only able to lie to himself for so long because he puts himself above others, but as soon as he's faced with something that's actually at his level, or at least his imagined level, he cracks under the pressure. It also works better than the typical liar revealed plot because at this point in the movie, we as the audience are like Rango and are starting to believe in the lie, at least in the sense that we are seeing him become more brave and heroic, whereas other liar revealed plots typically keep the lie festering in the viewer's heads until it inevitably comes crashing down.

Surely they must have asked Pixar to do this breath-taking work of genius! Actually, they did. And after reading the script, not only did they send this terrible animation as a joke, but they attached a hand-written note that said 'Go fuck yourselves!' signed by John Lasseter. But the director was so lazy, he used the clip anyway." What are you talking about? He also wrongly credits Zach Braff as the voice actor playing The Once-ler when it's actually Ed Helms. He even made an inaccurate comparison between The Grinch and The Mandalorian in his The Grinch 2018 Nostalgia Critic review. He went out of his way to say in his Troll In Central Park review "Yeah. Rango got labeled for kids because its animated, that's sad especially when so many adult comedies exist and are accepted as adult media but almost certainly because of how garish the jokes usually are, but Rango is different. You know, I recall in the review for Quest for Camelot, Doug Walker crapped himself over the lack of explanations. Yet, he wants more things, like the Spanish daggers moving, to not be explained. Just something I couldn't help but notice.
Also, in the Alien vs. Predator review, he somehow missed the fact that one of the predators got an egg laid inside em by a face hugger and actually asked why the chest burster looked like the predator, instead of doing the research so he doesn't need to ask it.
Like... does he just refuse to do research? Does he not watch a movie he's reviewing twice, so he don't miss anything? Is he blind to obvious scenes that weren't hidden in the slightest? I was a kid when I watched this movie, and I noticed what a critic, who does this for a living, missed!

For one thing, when I watched him and Rob watching the actual movie, I know why he missed that part because he looked down at his iPad while the Facehugger attacks Scar, and Rob didn't bother to tell him that. Another thing that really bothers me is Doug claims that explaining is a "big problem" just to "allow audience to figure out", which is complete bulls***! Don't get me wrong, on one hand, exposition can be a problem when it showhorns in, but on the other hand, it allows audience to understand the details, or you don't need to explain something as long as you tell a story, much like how HP Lovecraft have written his monsters and deities to build sense of mystery and ambiguity in a setting. The only quote end quote "explanation" from Doug is saying "the alien and the predator, they don't like each other", which means they despise each other for no reason, and the Yautja would have even exterminate all of them without risk disrupting their rite of passage like they're supposed to for the survival of their species! Also, he also questions (with unfunny toliet humor and cringe name calling) why didn't the Yautja plant Ovimorphs on Earth and wait after a year to turn the whole planet into a hive world for them to hunt as a "tourist attraction", the only explanation is it only breaks their honor code when they commit so much genocide to an entire indigenous population they want to hunt when there are some species that are dangerous and armed, and would render extremely difficult for them to hunt a whole population of Xenomorphs from the ground hiding in plain sight. This is what only Bad Bloods, like the Killers from the AVP 3 comic, would do. In fact, not all Yautjas are hunters as there are civilian and military ranks. This isn't a bad thing to critisize exposition as long as it doesn't tie in to the story, but, Doug, if you want to know what's going on that you clearly missed, stop acting like explananation is automatically a "bad thing" just because it's "boring"!

It honestly makes me depressed to hear all of Doug's opinions on this movie, lambasting it in the way he does, and even has the *nerve* to say kids wouldn't understand this movie. While not every theme will be understood from a kid's perspective, it's still entertaining and easy to follow along. This is speaking from experience since *I* used to be a kid absolutely ENAMORED by this movie. It is still genuinely one of my all time favorite animated films and growing up with a better understanding of things I missed makes it all the better.
It also boggles my mind that he said certain things were left unanswered that were LITERALLY. EXPLAINED. IN THE MOVIE. It makes me question if he even WATCHED the film in the first place or paid attention to it.
Thank you for calling it out and making this essay in general. I would've never known he had this bad of a take on the film without it and I can only hope people who might've been spurred off seeing the film due to his video watch yours, or just watch it in general, to appreciate this movie better.

Granted, there is a time and a place for actual misery-based comedy - _Tom & Jerry_ and the aforementioned _South Park_ are fine examples of this - but Doug thinks that just because he personally favours that style of comedy, that must mean it’s *the* defining style of comedy there is, and others pale in comparison. It has the same energy as the _Family Guy_ writing staff thinking that today’s kids can’t enjoy books just because computers exist, ignoring that it’s possible for kids to have *multiple* hobbies, speaking as someone who was very much into books *and* computers as a kid.

I really dislike the NC, and that goes all the way back before I watched and read about the crap that went on with the Channel Awesome folks and their associates.
His reviews stink of infantile observations and jokes, and not in the way that would please a kid, just in a way that rage baits adults. I can see a 12 yr old find him funny, but 12 yr olds have a still developing brain and are obviously not even able to process every bit of information given to them efficiently. They're not dumb, they're just susceptible to accepting someone else's opinion as fact very easily, especially someone they're seeing on a screen.
But aside from everything annoying thing he does in his videos, this thing of continuously considering animation as a medium through which where stories are told to kids just enrages me to no end.
The entire body of work of people like Satoshi Kon proves beyond a doubt that animation is not exclusively for kids and that it simply serves as a completely open space for translating the human mind and its processes when dealing with complex emotions. Kon is the one who comes to mind, but honestly, even (the often very cranky) Miyasaki defends that kids should not be coddled throughout their entire childhood and should be taught to deal with the real world early enough that it doesn't traumatize them later when adulthood hits - which is why he hates Disney and anything that follows their model (there could be a middle ground there, Mr Miyazaki, ease up won't you).
But going back to Doug, it's surprising how he still gets any views at all, when you compare his stuff to much, _much_ better channels that examine this kind of media and back up their opinions with some solid arguments and serious research. You mentioned Schaffrillas as one, but you get other great people like Steve Reviews, Johnny 2 Cellos, Jay Exci and Super Eyepatch Wolf, to name a few, who do actual work to make their videos, and not just say "but I've watched a lot of cartoons!".
Doug's work is lazy and misses the point 99% of the time. As for the Twitter bait jokes, how else is he supposed to remain even slightly relevant when others have surpassed him so long ago?
To conclude this, I'm subscribing. Liked your style.

Another big issue I find with westerns, the older the better for this, is the depiction of Native Americans and the glorification of violence against them. As time passed, people fell out of love and into hate for this particular style of american historical revisionism. Like, there are western inspired movies I ADORE - the Mandalorian is a show that plays a lot up well - but the actual history? COvering it in a way that should be tolerated isn't something at least half of America would even tolerate, much less pay to see.

9:09 "Rango Arizona" was a reference to the movie "Raising Arizona" and that's what the clip he showed was from. The music seems to be an homage or dupe of the iconic song from that movie (Raising Arizona Theme: Way Out There by Carter Burwell). It is not mariachi music.
That song is also inspired by old westerns, so the similarity may be unintentional. Only so many ways to yodel, I guess.

Okay, also, Id like to point out, the jokes at 28:10 and 29:10 are *wordplay*, and a result of the characters being uninformed or misinterpreting what someone else said. Rango says “no offense” to his use of “ingenuity” because he *wrongly assumes* that the word comes from a westernized, bastardized pronunciation of “Indian” (which is ALSO an incorrect term to use for Wounded Bird), when really it has nothing to do with that. Balthazar mistakes “thespian” for “lesbian”, and he doesn’t even say anything bad about same sex marriage, he just points out that it is illegal in some parts of the setting, which was *true* of America in 2011 IIRC, making it a topical joke. Wordplay and the use of misunderstandings like this is like…… one of THE simplest forms of comedy. Like this is Shakespeare’s clown characters level of basic funniness. The joke isn’t based on a racial stereotype, nor is it making fun of lgbtq+ people. The *joke* is that these characters don’t know what words mean. Doug saying “why hasn’t Twitter canceled this yet” kind of proves he missed the point of those jokes, at least for me? It’s literally *just* wordplay. These are *just* puns. It’s not making fun of anyone, except for the characters who misunderstand the words used. It’s not punching down. There’s nothing to “cancel” here, and baiting a reaction like that is kind of disingenuous on Doug’s part, especially because there *will* be a portion of his audience who decides *whether or not to watch the movie* based purely on his review.
Hopefully that makes some sort of sense, I just think that it’s important as a consumer of media to understand what media is saying, especially in its humor. Misinterpretations of writers intentions like what’s happening here can cause a lot of harm.

I get that paying for thumbnails weekly can be a pain, but the Critic coming back literally made the job a bi-weekly thing because he only does reviews every other week now.
Sure, that's a healthier structure overall creatively, but Doug HAS to realize he's literally taking one of his employees and cutting their monthly earnings in half by doing that, right? $10 per thumbnail is HILARIOUSLY low and the fact that Doug didn't just double his pay to a stupidly reasonable $20 per thumbnail shows a massive lack of understanding of things on his part.
Seriously, the incompetence on display is just...... What the fuck???

Also, to the point Douglas Funnie made on the E-Motion Capture, Walt Disney himself (when the animators were working on The Pointer) acted out the things he wanted Mickey Mouse to do in that short. They filmed him so they could copy his movements and animate over them. Sure, Walt asked to delete them because cringe, but it says a lot when the reviewer doesn't take into account the medium he is reviewing. Maybe a history lesson here and there couldn't hurt.
