Everything Wrong With NC's Sonic OVA Review

- In which I live up to the "Sonic" part of my username and riff Nostalgia Critic's review of the 1996(JP)/1999(US) Sonic OVA using the CinemaSins format.
Toward the end of the video, I do start to sound a bit angry, but since The Critic confirmed his series is supposed to be an analytical one, his later reviews really start to show where his priorities are, leading to being very misinformative of any properties covered and it completely destroys the popular "it's just a comedy" excuse. If you want to make a comedy sketch series or a riff series, don't advertise it as a review series.

I plan to review at least two more Nostalgia Critic videos in the near future, but they won't be on any of the three MisAnthro Pony covered on his channel or the infamous video on Pink Floyd's "The Wall".
EDIT (AUG. 21, 2020): Also, STOP TELLING ME ABOUT MY PREDICTIONS FOR THE 2020 MOVIE, it was pretty good and pleasantly surprised me but there was no way for me to know that when I penned the script in EARLY MAY 2019 when the situation on development and release were still rapidly changing.
*1)* Am I the only one who sees - Yes, even the difference that Sonic tries to save Metal - the similarities between that scene, & Star Wars Episode 3 when Obi-Wan slashed Anakin's legs & left arm on Mustafar??
*2)* At 22:02 Was that... Kirby music? Super Smash Bros music to a Kirby stage??
I recently watched the 2020 Sonic movie on Hulu. I rather enjoyed it. The part Tom saw "Make a Real Friend" on Sonic's "Bucket List" made me cry, damn it! And I honestly have to admit, it's been *WAY* too long since anyone made a movie with a part that moved me to tears.

Actually, Metal's death is a bit deeper then Sonic being distraught over the loss of his potential brother.
There was also a conversation with the two before their fight where Metal claims there can only be one Sonic and one has to go, referring to Sonic himself. But once it got to the death scene, when Sonic tries to save it, only to reject its life, claiming there can only be one Sonic once again, this time, meaning that metal itself is the one who has to go.
Meaning that Metal is not only accepting its own mortality, but also accepting its own inferiority. That's actually pretty sad when you think about it.
Doug could honestly have touched on that sad part, but of course, he's Doug Walker, you know what he's gotta do.
It's gotta be hard, robot or living organism, accepting your inferiority
See I never noticed the brother or mental link thing as a kid, I just assumed much like shadow sonic would see humanity in the bot and be sad he died after learning said humanity
Something I’ve heard people complain about is why robotnic would boobytrap the path and attack Sonic if he wanted him to get to the generator to stop it from exploding and get his data copied. I’ve got an idea! Contingencies! The first hope was that the traps would kill him. If that didn’t work, he would kill him. If that didn’t work, the entire planet exploding would kill him. And if that somehow didn’t work, Metal Sonic could 100% take Sonic out of the picture. Metal Sonic was the main plan, but if you have an easier way to defeat your ultimate rival, you’d take it, because that is his main goal to start. He’s trying to kill Sonic. If that means with a spike pit, that works! Only after Sonic is “dead” does he go after the ice caps.

That entire segment was one of the most uncomfortable things I’ve ever watched. Doesn’t help he played the whole “ There’s nothing more cool than being hugged by someone you like “ clip from Sonic Sez.

It's like he's trying to over correct for older videos, like the one where he dared to say that Sailor Moon was attractive. He did a follow-up video that was highly uncomfortable, where he made a big deal about the characters being teenagers, so you shouldn't find them attractive.

@@skylarsworld9477 Throughout the review--particularly whenever Sara was on screen--he would make jabs of her essentially being fur bait, he snarkily said "THAT part was rewound..." when Sara and Eggman were climbing out of the wreckage after Metal's introduction, stopped the review to go on about the "Tails, get off!" scene and drag in the Sonic Sez PSA about bad touch, and Sara beating up Metal where he continued accusing the film of being horny because "SHE'S SITTING ON HIS FACE!" Nobody tell this schmuck about Rouge or he'll have an aneurysm.

Am I the only one who’s mad that 3 of those 4 “hated sequels” NC showed are considered classics. Also I’m pretty sure most of the megaman sequels he showed were good games as well.
Doug has pretty much been on a roll with not giving a fuck so this doesn't surprise me at all. He has no experience with Sonic or Mega Man (if this episode is anything to go by) and his priority is making jokes instead of researching the thing he's reviewing and giving a fair and honest review.
Also with the Eggman face on things comment, that’s the joke to begin with. He’s an egotist to a ridiculous degree so Critic is kinda just missing that his comment is the point and Sega is in on the humor

For those wondering, Theodore Roosevelt was played by the late Robin Williams in the _Night at the Museum_ films, and Einstein was played by Nathan Lane in... that Nutcracker movie we don't talk about.
I could be wrong, but I think Doug meant to say "congested," but said "constipated" in an effort to be funny. He fails.

3:32 Something else is when nostalgia critic was showing off of sonic games people hated he showed sonic adventure 1,2 and sonic heroes which are actually considered fan favorites by many sonic fans (myself included) why didn’t he show off sonic games that are ACTUALLY hated amongst the fanbase like sonic R or sonic labyrinth or crap even sonic boom!
This all goes back to him not finding Sonic to be his cup of tea and the regular barely scratching the surface research Doug does in a two-week production cycle. And his superficial research includes, no shock, looking at the grossly slanted consensus in favor of what slags like Game Grumps set forth. I don't even think there's a resident Sonic fan on whatever's left of the Channel Awesome staff that would've been able to set the record, probably wouldn't matter anyway.
I mean to be fair, his jokes have gotten really really lame.
I have my own history with this OVA, I've seen this many years ago in the video store when there was a video store and VHS, my cousin and I weren't too sure about it at first. But after watching it we both loved it, despite some of its flaws.
My cousin loves Knuckles in this because of the hat, color red, and his attitude, sadly Knuckles wasn't treated too good in the last several years, and that angered my cousin.
I liked Tails in this, despite his voice he was actually a lot of fun watching him.
I'm honestly tired of the Nostalgia Critic, I still enjoy watching some of his classic videos but again for the most part, it's just all the same tired Remember it so you don't have to, okay so why are you making us watch it then?
And I hate it when he smacked both the live action Disney Jungle Book Remake and live action Sonic the Hedgehog movie!

Humans always existed in Sonic since the first game. In Sonic 1, we see a city in the background of Springyard zone, and in Sonic 3, in Sandopolis act 2 we see murals with both humans and echidnas. Just wanted to make that clear.
I thought so too, but it's the amount of continuity and canonicity ping pong between the games and supplemental media that causes a lot of confusion. Stuff like this is what I get for making videos as a hobby and relying on memory, heh.
@@MagmaPaint what if I told you the only games which I consider an eternaly consistent canon are from Sonic 1 to SA2, (spin-offs and Mania included) the games from Heroes to Unleashed as their own world, (as in, whatever have fun with it) and Sonic 4 to Forces as the disjointed meta era?
@@andresmcreviewer7933 Checks out. I'd add a note that Shadow the Hedgehog was intended to act as a sequel to SA2 either directly or indirectly in theory what with the involvement of GUN and loose ends on the ARK, in practice it still reads like a poorly planned choose your own adventure story.
I don't know if you saw it but JebTube made a two and a half hour video called The Timeline Where Sonic Succeeds that I just can't get enough of. He gives an entire retrospective of what could have been starting with Heroes, addressing what went wrong in our timeline and giving a blueprint of how an ideal version would be. All while putting in continuity nods to keep a consistent canon and lore.
@@MagmaPaint are you kidding? Of course I've watched it. His ideas are phenominal. Ruby of blue has also made great videos that show why the games from Sonic 1 to SA2 worked back then and are still hold up despite the technical issues. I myself made a video on how Sonic Boom (as beloved as it is) disrespected the Sonic series' original strengths. You can check it out if want.

The few comparisons I CAN make about Sonic and Mega Man is that yes, both of the protagonists are shown in blue and both fight evil mad scientists, and I guess Shadow SORTA looks like Bass...? But that's where the similarities would end. The only similarity I can think of is how some character share similar color schemes.
Shadow and Bass were very different characters until Sega kinda botched his character in Sonic Boom and Sonic Forces.
The characters don't have anything in common personality wise outside of Eggman and Wily.

As examples of games Sonic fans hate.
I never played these games ( Only Sonic games I played are Shadow & "Sonic & SEGA All-Star Racing". I am less of a game guy but more of a TV/Movie guy) but the consensus I gathered is that Adventure 1 + 2 are beloved by the fandom, Heroes has a mixed reaction & Sonic 06 is either hated or made fun off.
I honestly don't get the inclusion of Adventure 1 + 2. It make more sense for him to have included Unleashed, Secret Rings, Boom series and others because there lots to choose from but Adventure 1 + 2 are mostly loved by the fandom.

I really like how you pointed out actual facts. Even a new Sonic fan could easily notice that something is definitely off about this review. It’s literally nothing but his bullshit confusion. This just explains the amount of Nintendo games he plays (excluding the Sonic ones since I think he’s only watched a few videos and was like “Meh. Lame”). This guy really infuriated me. This was nothing but absolute mockery to the franchise if I’m being honest with myself. I hope that the real Sonic fans can show him the reason of why he should have this much dismay from this video. “Strap on your speeding shoes and get away from this movie as fast as you can.” Did he even plan? What was he gonna think Sonic would be? All helping and foolish? Many people admire Sonic’s cocky and reckless behavior but that’s also one of the reason of what makes him so awesome. Hell if he will even be able to make an actual review unless if he actually studies like Charri5 or even like you cause you had to rewind so many times just to see what was wrong. Like that’s like receiving so much respect. He should’ve planned if he was gonna make a Cinemasins parody.
His reviews of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and SatAM from way back when don't even hold up nowadays, which when he brought it up in this review likening them to 60s Batman and Batman: The Animated Series I found really rich because he showed no such respect or genuine insight with that double-review. Hell, Doug's schtick actively prevents any genuine insight on anything he reviews, even something that might be up his alley in taste, because he built himself on ripping bad movies and shows that don't hold up once the nostalgia goggles are off. So much so that anyone can suggest something they have an unpopular opinion on for a review and Doug will review it as such. Of all the entries in his Top 11 Things [He'll] Never Review, the Sonic related media should have been honored. But talking out of his ass seems more profitable so here we are, with this video ripping his review of the OVA and I've got to prepare one for his review of the 2020 movie. And I certainly don't trust him to review Sonic Underground, Sonic X, the Sonic Boom cartoon, or Sonic Prime when it comes out. For now, the next video of his I'm going to charbroil is the Powerpuff Girls movie review.

14:26 First off, the concept of having Robotnik's face on flagship structures of his is mainly due to his ego, really not because it's more efficient. Second, can I have the source for the "Robotnik builds everything by himself" claim? Also, in 16:19 yeah... I think he was maybe being sarcastic? I mean sure, Metal Sonic would send simpler-to-analyze results to Eggman, but I myself find it kinda disrespectful to the character that the evil genius with the IQ of 300 needs a simplified drawing to understand that Metal succeeded. Would be way more respectful if Metal sent a text, listing Sonic's body dysfunctions and received status, not a freaking two frames drawing for a toddler to understand.
1) This I addressed in a more recent video ("Nostalgia Critic STILL Doesn't Understand Sonic") and I made this video in about a week while final exams were in progress. Most of my material came from memory and quick refresher searches so things slipped through the cracks here and there.
2) With Doug it's hard to tell if he's joking or serious considering jokes cracked during his first viewing on something tend to make their way to the respective episode with no deviation (watch his Norm of the North review and First Viewing and compare the jokes) and his tendency to take things literally (the entirety of his The Wall review or taking Mayor Phlegmming calling Drix a placebo at face value in his Osmosis Jones review). The message itself can go either "show don't tell" or visual humor, or a shortcut to not have to deal with redoing frames to translate Kanji to other languages if the OVA had gotten popular/successful enough to warrant it.

While I enjoyed this, I have a question.
Ever since a couple months after his review came out, I encountered the video. At the time, I was still getting into the Sonic franchise after remembering the ova being the only Sonic related media that I knew when I was little. Currently I still haven't seen all of Sonic. While I was working on a project related to the ova, I cancelled it and wanted to instead talk about the Critic's review of it. The Critic used to be my biggest inspirations on CZcams at the time, but even before the controversy, when he was reviewing movies I knew about, and the ova is the best example. So I stuck with that.
My question is that there were some statements you said without any source or proof, even when I look them up. Like where you mentioned that Lainie Frasier had a cold while voicing Tails (6:50-7:02), or that Tails' fear of lightning being presented prior to the ova (10:20-10:27). Are there any links to these statements, or anything else behind the scenes to the ova? Since for the most part, what we see from the credits is what we get.

Thanks for bringing those up, man. During production of this video I was also coming up on finals so my research and supplementation wasn't the most thorough, going off mostly my numerous times watching the OVA and other information I knew previously. When double checking some of my facts, I did make the error of when Tails' fear of lighting was made known in the games; the earliest mention I could find was Sonic Jam on the Saturn, which came out a year after the OVA (Japanese version). I wish I could have found something regarding the making of the OVA to back up the claim of Tails' voice actress recording lines with a cold, but it doesn't seem like such material is available.
As for my comments regarding the 2020 movie (which I just got back from and found pretty enjoyable), keep in mind that this video came out in May 2019 when the first trailer was lighting the internet on fire and announcement of the redesign and delay came up during editing, I even put a disclaimer before my segment on it.
Hope this clears anything up.
I wish Th3Birdman makes an EWW series on Nostalgia Critic, in case he gets bored of making videos on (Jeremy) CinamaSins. He should do videos on Doug’s take on The Terminator, Starship Troopers and The Matrix.

Simultaneously, yes and no. Yes to make the review a bit more entertaining, no because many points--not just in this review but many of them--show how dense Doug is and how very misinforming they become as a result.

You should also throw some of these criticisms towards Bennett's review of the OVA since, according to him, it "NEVER. HAPPENED". Never mind the fact we got Metal Sonic as a result of this OVA, but whatever.
Slight correction: Metal Sonic made his game debut in Sonic CD in 1993 and would continue to make appearances in the 1990s games (albeit spinoff titles). Metal wouldn't see a major role in a main game again until 2003's Sonic Heroes and wouldn't make his next tie-in media appearance until Sonic Boom in 2014, 15 years after the English release of the OVA. Sonic Underground and Sonic X also had points where Metal Sonic could be introduced even for an episode but because the Sega CD failed by a combination of poor marketing and lackluster library not a lot of Sonic fans outside the hardcore base would've been familiar with him at the time (Mecha Sonic from SK3, Silver Sonic from 2, and the model from Adventures don't count).
Maybe I'll look at Bennett's review but I currently have two other videos in production and I'm still in a position where I have to pick my targets wisely due to other things.

The guy barly knows what makes Sonic well Sonic. And just goes off with what the fans say, or the not very good ones I'll admit. And as someone whos played some of the games, I can be 100% honest, this here review makes it look even more cringe and not at all thought out, and just making stupid jokes that dont work, nor fly. Even some Sonic fan fiction can actually have good writing and jokes and such. Just. . .Don't do what Ian Flynn does, as that is something I rather avoid.
This is why When doing a review I always sit down go into the movie well looking up things from wiki pages and IMDB as when I did superman 3 I pointed out about there being other Kryptonite that can effect superman other than green also pointing out How when doing dragon ball dead zone about the garlic jr saga and how Garlic would return as you need to make sure to check your facts before going into the review otherwise you be setting up a hardfall

Sonic not being able to swim makes sense at first due to the creators not knowing hedgehogs could swim but keeping said trait of not being able to swim, as far as I know, makes little to no sense to do any more. Maybe that’s just me. I don’t know.
Maybe they kept it as a weakness for gameplay reasons, maybe it's just character flavoring.

(14:52) I believe what he was getting at was how Eggman had Sonic and Tails at gunpoint and yet he didn't bother to kill them then, therefor you take one sin away as you were answering a different problem. the answer to this problem is that Doug missed the fact that Eggman did try to kill the two, it just failed, so add that sin back. also, the problem you answered, if Eggman DID make a more dramatic attempt to kill them early on, Sonic and Tails would survive making it much harder for him to convince them that he is telling the truth, so another sin is added.
(16:02) I think he was talking about how the stick figures when Sonic "died" was overly childish, considering the fact that the sudden "death beep" and Sonic's face already clearly indicated that he was dead. the joke was to poke fun at this fact. remove one sin.

I really tried to give this a chance, but I'm sorry, most of these just sound like overanalyzing jokes while getting really mad at them.
Look, I'm also a bit critical of "modern" NC but the thing is, while he is making more of an effort to analyze movies, it's clear he still keeps his old traits as a less serious "Angry Reviewer" by just making jokes that aren't meant to be taken as serious criticism, they're just... y'know, jokes? And also not doing much research and just reviewing the movie as is as someone who's obviously not a Sonic fan and is only really familiar with the original Genesis games.
Like him doing the Sonic/Megaman comparison, it's obviously just a joke regarding they superficial similarities, he's not treating it as some HIGH IQ discovery he made, you really didn't need to go "UHM ACSHUALLY" for like 5 minutes to explain their differences.
Is this just a side effect of the rise of "serious/humorless" video essayists? That now people can't even watch an old-school review without having to stop every two minutes to complain about an small inaccuracy or a joke?

The reason there was pretty much only 24 sins is because there was WAY to much explaining every time he tried to make a joke (way to ruin the humor science girl)
