  • Part 5: Professional Gem Cutter, Steve Moriarty, teaches you how to transfer the gemstone from cutting the pavilion to the crown using his cold dopping method with epoxy. After that, he begins to analyze the crown material that he has left and places/cuts the facets that he thinks will work best on this beautiful natural color blue topaz from Brazil.

    I have to admit that the natural blue topaz is special for it has a light colouring and they seem to have a brilliance of their own the irradiated ones seem to be dead. I have found a fewnatural ones in Qld Australia but not of that size. I love your shows and I have been cutting now for about 50 years and there is alway,s time to learn more things. Such as you polish with diamond whilst I have only ever used Linde A and I use a lot higher speed. Keep up the good work and stay safe from down under.

    Love your vidoes!! Can you please show us more mistakes and fixes. There is not much out there for beginners making mistakes at different steps. Wish I could find a book called, Faceting Mistakes and How to Recover, or Not.

    Great video - keep them coming! Do you still cut & polish the table this way on the V5, or do you use the adapter?

    Just my own curiosity, but why not use an eyedropper of acetone to dissolve the epoxy? As long as you're careful about placement & cleanup you shouldn't have any risk of affecting the other side.

    • @Moregems
      @Moregems  Před 2 lety

      Acetone is very slow to break down epoxy.

    and 9 is just a 6 upside down so no shame in that mix up. i guess 6 avoided getting 8 by 9 so 9 8 the stone :D

    Please be careful of those epoxy chemical fumes- my lungs are permanently damaged from them and I didn’t realize just doing what you’re doing could actually ruin my lungs and it did. So use a chemical mask and fan or well ventilated room while doing this step. Just wanted to add this.

    Do you folks actually make a piece of jewelry with a stone this big? or is there something else you do with the stone? sell it to some kind of collector? ............. personally I probably would have made 3 stones out of that piece...

    • @Moregems
      @Moregems  Před rokem

      We have made pendants this large, but it takes a special person. We’ve also sold large gems to collectors. We ended up cutting two gems from that single crystal. The large one shown here and a “smaller” one.
