  • I love my tiny Rokinon 14mm f/2.8. I purchased it several years ago and have used it on all of my Nikon DSLR cameras (D800, D750, D610, D850, D7XXX, D500, etc.) with no problems. Recently, I took it on a trip to the American SW and ran into problems using it on my Nikon Z6. This video details my experience with the lens while mounted on the Nikon FTZ adapter.

    Interesting! Thanks Mike. I have used the Rokinon 14mm and 12mm with my D810 for years and never a problem.

      The Rokinon is rock solid on all my DSLRs.

    This lens don't have problem with Nikon DSLR or other brands. But for mirrorless it have some small issue, I used with Nikon Z5 , automatically it showed you need to set lens to F22 manually. Then used your camera to control the apertures setting. as what Barr said .

    noticed the same when I tried putting my d610 together with my 70-200 f4 but with the PN 11 ext tube ( used with the 105 f2.8 manual focus macro lens) inbetween, HAD to set A mode, and put the MINIMUM aperture into the non-cpu lens data slot, metered the scene with the 105 at f 22, what the 70-200 stops down to,
    ( using it's own non-cpu setting!) to discover the shutter speed, then put that into the camera after setting M mode again, due to no communication the lens is stopped down ALL the way, so you MUST meter for this condition in a stopped down method , and set M to stop the electronics taking control, AFTER this all worked fine!!
    ( used 1250 ISO and just added flash to fix any under-exposure). Also try using the "spot" metering mode this will avoid the meter becoming confused with the contrast, ie: metering a white wedding dress as too brite, or a dark suit as too black, so it measures the scene at the focus point, not all over the field of view.

    I am having the same problem with the same setup (Z6, FtZ, Rokinon 14mm, f2.8, latest firmware on Z6). As with you, it didn’t do this at first.

    I just saw this post. I see it was made about a year or so ago. I recently picked up the Samyang version of this lens. From what I understand, they are manufactured in the same place and badged as either Samyang or Rokinon. I also experienced this issue on my Z6 with the FTZ adaptor. I saw my screen flickering oddly in live view and also heard the aperture clicking. I managed to not take any pictures that were affected, but I was able to get the odd behavior to stop by manually adjusting the F stop on the lens off f22 and then adjusting it back. (as you may know, the lens needs to be set to f22 manually for the camera software to adjust it internally). I'm hoping to not see any more issues with it as I really like the results I got with it.

    I had this happen on my Rokinon 24mm almost unusable. My 14mm and 135mm seem to work fine with the Z6. Not sure what to do except tape up the contacts.

  • @staskornev

    I am having the same problem too . What did I do in this case. I just sealed one of the contacts of the lens with tape (you can also cover it with varnish). The camera now recognizes this lens without a processor and without aperture number. I lost some functions, but now I control the aperture ring on the lens.

  • @djteknovibe93
    @djteknovibe93 Před 3 lety

    Were you using the autofocus version of this lens? The reason I ask is because many people have said they get the same problem and that covering the pins on the lens with tape stops the problem but on the manual focus version of this lens there aren't any electronic pins on the lens.

  • @djteknovibe93
    @djteknovibe93 Před 3 lety

    This lens also comes in the Z mount too and so you should maybe test the Z mount version to see if the problem is being caused by the FTZ adapter on your F mount version of the lens.

    • @drazenzuvela1647
      @drazenzuvela1647 Před 2 lety

      Z mount version is pure manual. No any commujnication with camera. So using chiped one for Fmount on Z is also possible using cheap dummy adapter F-to-Z 3rd party, what Samyang actualy did with their Z version. They just extend the back side to match flange distance.

      @@drazenzuvela1647 Manually focusing is easy in the daylight thanks to focus peaking although harder at night because unless the camera has an amazingly high resolution screen, at night you get bad image quality in the viewfinder (when you zoom in to finely focus) and lots of noise in the viewfinder (on mirrorless cameras). In the daytime or early evening manual focusing is easy. I've found it's only harder at night when it's very dark.

      A lot of distortion, but you can correct it. Not great image quality from f2.8 to f6.7... but f8 to f11 deliver great IQ. Put some tape on the lens contacts and shoot in manual mode. It will work.

      There are many third party F to Z mount adapters which are only mechanical. Those are much cheaper than the FTZ as well (20-30 bucks). Some of these have an aperture control ring for G-type lenses... some even have variable ND built in...
