- Some performances from Smokey Robinson's 1970 television special featuring The Temptations, The Supremes, Miracles and Stevie Wonder. Please excuse the HC-3 in the middle of screen. I was unable to remove it. Anyhoo, enjoy! :-)

Paul is sooo handsome!!!! I love the Temps...RIP to the one who has gone to glory!!!

I could listen to Paul talk all day long. I loved his articulation.
@@kechellbynum2656 I do too. He also loves to play and talk to younger kids.
eddie kendricks one of te great tenors in music history
Best thing about Motown is any of them can sing any of each other’s songs and make it their own
Brought a ☺on my face & a tear In my 💙 July 2,2020 thanks for posting
Whenever Eddie is harmonizing, I don’t care with whom, his voice soars over the others. I wouldn’t say his voice was powerful, Dennis Edwards voice is powerful. Eddie’s voice just rises above the rest.
That falsetto was mindblowng
It's about vocal harmony, harmonics, and musical dynamics. All experienced singers in vocsl groups know how to instinctively blend in with the other singers at the correct vocal volume, without drowning each other out. Your goal as a vocal group is to sound good. Therefore, as a singer, creating harmony, you are not only listening to your own voice, but the vocals of your fellow group members around you. Powerful vocalist like Paul Williams, David Ruffin, and Dennis Edwards were able to tone down their vocal volume, and dynamics to blend smoothly into the background harmony as the song dictated. Incidentally, during this performance of "Get Ready", you'll notice that Smokey Robinson is singing Eddie Kendricks' part in his natural voice. That's because Smokey is a natural countertenor, which is a vocal range higher than a tenor voice. In his younger days, Smokey was often mistaken for singing in falsetto when he was actually singing in his natural voice. Eddie Kendricks, on the other hand employed his trademark falsetto regularly, though he frequently blend it with his natural voice.
In his prime, Eddie's voice was quite powerful. Listen to "The Temptations In A Mellow Mood" album, and "Meet The Temptations. Check it Out! Ciao!!!
@@renaissanceman165 thank you so much. This is what I appreciate. Someone explaining in detail their thoughts and observations. I would like your opinion on Eddie’s voice in “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.” I don’t hear a lot of falsetto from him in that song. I hear some but not a lot. Am I mistaken?
Eddie used his natural voice on If you let me and Home of Jonnie May
I loved smokey then and still love him to this day 💯❤️
Can't get enough of the motown sound gotta keep it alive it's part of music history
Why is this film footage sooo freaking amazing to me?
I was at this taping . . . after the shoot, I left the audience and spoke with Cindy, Jean and Mary (who had a broken index finger), got their autographs too . . . still have them. Out of Smokey and the Miracles, Fran Jeffries, The Temptations, and Stevie, THE SUPREMES were the only ones who did their performances in ONE TAKE. Thanks much for the share.
The other singer / dancer was Fran Jeffries. I was at this taping. TRIPLE SNAP. Got Cindy's, Jean's and Mary's autograph after the taping. The Supremes were the ONLY ones in this special that performed their numbers in ONE TAKE.
Eddie Kendricks was so cute and passionate.
The Tempts should have recorded "What the World Needs Now Is Love" with Eddie singing lead
you right about that he sang that soo beautiful
Omg I'm in love.i swear I was born in the wrong year....thanks for the upload
Raven Henry You're very welcome. I've uploaded the entire special if you're interested in watching it. :-)
YESS. ..I have watched the whole special...loved it
@@DiscoNights1987 can you reupload the entire episode?
Eddie could sing anything!! i love some Eddie Kendricks...i tried so hard to sound like him.....only one Eddie!
his solo career was nice too! but after all these years of being a fan...i watched some of his solo performances , his stage presence as a solo artist was lacking...some artist are a better fit! within a group! to me he stood out as a member of the tempts! the five lead singers, all original voices that blended perfectly! Eddie was soo smooth when tempts did their dances steps...you had to not only listen, but something to watch as well. again! Eddie could sing three blind mice! and blow you away! his tone was unique and sweet like sugar to the ear. I wished Eddie and Ruffin had never left the group! THAT ORIGINAL LINE UP WAS DA BOMB! DAVID, EDDIE, OTIS PAUL AND MELVIN!~we know as the TEMPTIN TEMPTATIONS~!!!
One will seldom ever again see so many talented and good looking performers assembled together in that setting....Dennis Edwards was very handsome as was Jean Terrell.
Eddie Kendricks said he better shop around.
I have to agree with everyone, this is a great post!! I remember watching this. To the poster that said that The Temps version of "Special Occasion" was excellent, Absolutely!! No one could sing that Falsetto tenor like Eddie. He was the man!! What makes it special is the blend of the Temps voices, people don't understand those voices blended like no other...ear candy!!
amen
Without a doubt a masterpiece! So many memories, and when they covered Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions I was too through. Never to happen again. Miss all the ones that are gone. Cannot be replaced, Never!
Love everything bout it. Love the early 70’s fashion especially the Natural hair! I was really born in a wrong time
I love my Motown family 🥰❤️🖤💚✊🏾❤️🖤💚 and l ought to because I'm a Motown baby 🥰while the other parents were singing lullabies to their babies my mom was singing Motown to me😘❤️🖤💚✊🏾❤️🖤💚l love being black and I'm so proud of our black, rich heritage 🥰❤️🖤💚✊🏾❤️🖤💚
P.S. Cindy was so cute . . . her bubbling personality, voice, so sincere. Mary had a broken index finger, forgot how she broke it.
Dude Stevie wonder has the voice of a legend and that is him
Eddie Kendricks and Smokey harmonizing, WOW!
They need to put this on dvd
Beautiful memories
Straight talent!!!
Smokey still sound the same love that sweet voice , my favorite singer
This was the time where Aretha was so crazy about Dennis Edwards. I must say that I Can’t blamed her. 😄
She really wants to date the whole group 😂🤣 😂😄😄😅😂
The Tempts, the Supremes (atrocious wigs, BTW), the Miracles, AND Stevie together...EPIC! I love how everybody had a part in the last number. They all did a beautiful job. Don't think I've ever heard Cindy sing solo before. And Eddie...*sigh* too adorable for words. His voice just soared on "Special Occassion."
Thanks A TON, DiscoNights1987 for this clip! :-)
That was G-R-E-A-T!!!! I was only a year old when this was made. Really like the Temptations' rendition of "What The World Needs Now". I would have loved to hear the whole song. By the way, Fran Jeffries is beautiful!!! I thought that was Smokey's wife, Claudette singing. The songs at the end reflected what was going on in the world at that time. They are timeless and should be sung by today's artists.
I grew up with the Temptations I saw all these shows and I know all that song my brother met Eddie Kendricks at a dance contest and he Juan the dance contest he took a picture with Eddie Kendricks Eddie had on knickerbockers that was back in the early seventies they were the best group then the Four Tops The Stylistics the Supreme The Jackson 5 and so many more that music is not played anymore today shame is not played
Thanks for posting that--it was fun to watch!
Branner it sure was a breath of fresh air ☺ July 2,2020
Good to hear Smokey sing Get Ready, I always like to hear how songwriters interpret their own songs
OMG Jean, what an amazing voice!!!!
Yes
Thanks for this classic!
Thank you for sharing❤. Please share more❤️.
I AM USING THIS FOR AN OCCASION TO TALK TO MY WIFE OF 44 YEARS 12/19/68 TO THE PRESENT 1/14/2013. - . ABOUT THE TIMES WE SHARED AND THE AMOUNT OF CHALLENGE AND EFFORT IT TOOK AND TAKES TO ENDURE SUCH A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. THANK GOOD-NESS FOR THE ENERGY IT TAKES TO ENDURE AND NAVIGATE THROUGH ALL THE CHANGES AND WAYS OF THE MOMENTS IN TIME.
Thanks for this clip. I seriously enjoyed it in its entirety.
It was Just great love it. ❤️❤️
Motown was and is loaded with Superstars and their music will live on forever may God bless them all!!!
Great special. Would be nice to see this piece of Motown talent history on DVD. Everyone's great here. And I like The Supremes' reworking of DRATS' Hollywood Palace '69 "Someday We'll Be Together" pantsuit numbers. Tempts always looking sharp, and Dennis Edwards the coolest ever.
This was 1970. Beginning of a great decade. I wonder if any of them thought, young Stevie Wonder would dominate it
Great video!! I love it with all of these greats singing each other's songs!! ❤❤❤

Love the supremes.
@almavieja22 You're very welcome, and I totally agree with you on Eddie's voice during Special Occassion. Would've been nice if the Tempts had released their own version of that song. It sounded sooo good! Lol.
DiscoNights1987 tv
Sing it smokey now get on the friendship train
Temptations & Smokey Robinson they showd had a ball back then .
omg do yall notice at the end when eddie dashed off the staged ?
So cool
Beaitiful
1970. 💯
You're very welcome. Glad you enjoyed it. :-)
This kinda made me upset. Because i always said that Dennis was the perfect replacement for David...I really wanted to hear him sing ALL of
"Its Growing". Nobody can sing it like David but Dennis was doing something lol.
@jasonmarywilson Yes, the Supremes sang "Someday We'll Be Together" earlier in the show with Smokey and the other lady is Fran Jefferies.
@jasonmarywilson You are right. I have the complete show. I also remember watching it when it originally aired.
Classic
Too bad the audience died before the show!
Although the show was scripted, it was nice to see the personal chemistry exhibited. That's a facet of each we aren't privy to. Thx
I swear to God, Stevie Wonder always has the best taste in women, hittin' on Louvain Demps and Cindy Birdsong, no slouch is he when it comes to pretty girls!
I never,seen, this,,before
Jeez, will this ever be released commercially? Wow!
I wish that Claudette was on this special
Yeah...and Pete too. But he was sidelined with a leg injury. The Miracles were not at full strength for this special
Hi edagdwg can't buy this true fun God at work peace and love to all of them linda j ☮️ glad to hear them having fun not fighting ❤️❤️❤️❤️💯💯💯💯💯💯
Pss l never heard this song "Special Occasion" but it has the O'jays "Family Reunion" ring to it🥰❤️🖤💚✊🏾❤️🖤💚black power forever 🥰❤️🖤💚✊🏾❤️🖤💚
The Best and always will be even know disco came this was the real deal
The lady is Fran Jeffries.
I was looking at the video and why did eddie leave the stage at the end when the group came down the stairs
Joyce Garmon because Eddie was fighting with Otis & Melvin behind the scenes because he was uncomfortable with the psychedelic material
@@JasonVoorhees-wn6co Why was Eddie uncomfortable July 2,2020
Jason Voorhees u only say that cuz wikipedia says that but imo he was fine with the psychedelic material it was just the business that ticked him off and yea i think at this point in time he was having alot of issues with the group
Lady behind Dennis Edwards with the plaid shirt on looks puzzled! 😂
the audience is there lol u didnt noticed they were shaking hands with the audience at the end
I'm hearing all this applause but I don't see it in the audience :/
Those were better times in the city's people wasn't sooooo quick to fight and kill each other sad Linda j.☮️☮️☮️☮️☮️
My 2 main men smokey and Eddie
Who is the lady with Stevie in the gold outfit ,Chris Clark ?
