- Here we perform our complete annual Tesla maintenance service on a Model 3 LR. There are common misconceptions and these do require maintenance.

I have a Model Y for last 2+ years, got it when it was relatively cheap. Apart from tires, I have added windshield wiper fluid and changed the cabin air filter every year. That's it. Our previous car was a V8 SUV that on avg did 16mpg, with Tesla we have had no issues, 46k+ trouble free miles and counting.
You really should get the brake service done once a year too. Tesla charged us 75 bucks, but you can do it yourself if you want. Just keeps your brakes from seizing up. They don't get used because of regen, and they can get rusted and seized from not using them.

@@Xanthopteryx Nothing is really needed. The cabin air filter can be replaced (like on any car) if it ever starts to smell and the wiper blades can be replaced when they get worn down. But that's really all you need to do besides potentially a tire rotation if you have uneven tire wear.

Only service you need is tire rotation and to change air cabin filter. On my second Tesla never had a problem.
As a previous Tesla technician years ago I can verify and tell you that Tesla did not use "special lifting pads" to raise customers vehicles. Only time pads were used is when HV battery replacements were performed.
Per ChatGTP for my 2021 Model Y
Tesla has not provided a specific maintenance schedule for the 2021 Model Y as their vehicles generally require minimal routine maintenance. However, some general service recommendations for Tesla vehicles include:
Tire Rotation, Balance, and Alignment: Rotate and balance your tires every 10,000 to 12,000 miles or as needed. Check the alignment if you notice uneven tire wear or the vehicle pulling to one side.

I just did my front brakes. People say back caliper pins don’t need cleaning if they’re still bouncy. I’m going to be doing those next weekend. I plan on taking pins out to clean and re lube.
Not using brakes is almost just as bad as always using them (not really )

Best car ever. I have a 2019 and knock on wood it’s been super dependable. Only one set of tires replaced, wipers, and in cabin filter.

@@skandolust2927 just tires ran about $1267 from Tire Rack (PIRELLI P ZERO ALL SEASON) and actual install from Tesla ran about $294 which included a battery health check. Wiper blades were $50 and in-cabin filters were about $40 total (there are two that one needs). With the in-cabin you also need the following item to wash out dirt/debris (Lubegard 96030 Kool-It Evaporator and Heater Foam Cleaner) that will run you $14 on Amazon. Keep in mind the in cabin is replaced ever two years along with wipers depending where you live. Other than that windshield wiper fluid again from Amazon or local autocrats $20. My total out of pocket for the 3 1/2 years has been under $2000. This does not include charging or PPF and/or ceramic coating that's more on a personal preference.
If you're looking to purchase one I say go for it. You'll never go back to using an ICE car having to purchase Dino-juice. I trickle charge at home nothing fancy. I get free charging at work so yea.....I'm pretty happy. I hope I answered your questions and some.

They removed drive unit maintenance from official sources, they had it when it was initially released. Search drive unit failure and you’d be very surprised. All these car manufacturers, all they care about is the low cost of ownership in JD Power, they don’t care as long as car lasts till the warranty
@@JaysGarageRaleigh1 BS If a drive unit has to be replaced because the filter NEEDED to be replaced on a regular basis, Tesla would be paying millions in warranty repairs. Since Tesla does not require the filters be replaced, they can't blame the non-replacement for a damaged driver unit.
Cabin air filters are every 1-2years as needed, depends, recommended 2yrs. Wipers as needed. Rotations are every 6250miles or when >2/32" difference front/rear... YMMV, that is 6mos for most people, 1year rotations is too long. Alignments every year seems overkill, but... if you can afford it, and especially if rotation crew sees uneven wear, good idea. Didn't know it was so involved doing alignment w/ weights etc!
Brake cleaning/lube is as noted, primarily only for salted winter roads etc., but given they are never used w/ regen, good to check/exercise them periodically.
Do NOT touch/change the drive unit oil filter. That is likely lifetime item, or only when Tesla says to. I would NOT want to risk the drive unit warranty...
I do most of these tasks myself, very easy car to maintain on your own. Nice video though.

I wonder if wheel bearing checks are needed every other year or so, especially because you don't really need a brake job like a regular car when checking, replacing or re-greasing the wheel bearings would normally be done.
You hear when a bearing goes out. Besides that, i have only had ICE cars. My previous Mazda 6, i never replaced the front brakes (120.000 km - died in a car crash sadly). The rear i replaced because of... it was rusted stuck totally (Swedish climate = Rust, rust, rust, rust and some rust). My Volvo V90 now i have never replaced, 70.000 km. There is a lot left so probably not before 150.000 km.

Do not change that oil filter or oil in that drive unit. You will be out of a car for a few months because the fluid is never in the stores.

@@terrymac6866 I work dealer life. It will be a cold day in hell if we don't have the filter available for a non appointment style service. As for the Tesla or any manufacturer of that matter. If there is no published interval for the filter it is life of vehicle and there will be limited stock because of that.
Model 3 long range tire rotation is it only front to back?
Do Teslas notify you when it’s time to perform service like every other car made after 1995? I’ve had my Model 3 for more than 3 years and it close to 40k miles. Never seen a message saying that service is due. I’ve never performed any service other than replacing the tires at 32k miles (never rotated, my bad). I replaced the cabin filters with non-Tesla ones after a year due to a mildew like odor. Other than that, I’ve had zero issues with the car. I feel that if the car needed service, it should tell you.
Watch my newest video. For the car to alert you about service will go against teslas marketing of 0 maintenance. In order to find maintenance info, you have to read the tesla manual that no one reads. Here is something from a daily check in tesla manual “Look for abnormal fluid deposits underneath Model 3 that might indicate a leak. It is normal for a small pool of water to form (caused by the air conditioning system’s dehumidifying process).”
Recent car updates added a feature that compares tire rotation speeds, and if different, will flag for unusual tire wear and suggest a rotation. Otherwise, no it doesn't do any reminders, it would be nice to remind each 6250mi etc for rotations. It will notify you if the wiper fluid or others are low, or other items have problems, including (early cars) 12v battery seems unhealthy (not always in time.)
Cabin air filters, really is per smell test :) 1-2years as needed.

1st time I ever seen a wheel alinement tool that clamps onto the tire instead of the rim….how is that accurate exactly?
Much more accurate, less room for error. Those rim clamps are things of past. If you don’t push those things all the way, it’s not accurate at all and some tires have no clearance between rom and tire

Unnecessary "service". Changing out tires, wipers, air filter isn't really "service". Service = taking a BMW or Mercedes or Porsche in at 10K, 25K, 50K for major / necessary stuff and those service appointments cost thousands.

Do you sit on the floor or the seat when you’re driving? If you’re going through the effort to do a proper alignment using weights, then weight distribution is also necessary. … so the weight needs to go in the seat.

Personally I've found the factory cabin airfilters to be the best. Wasn't happy with the ones on amazon.

2018 Model 3 with a winter/summer tire swap every year. Only other maintenance is wiper fluid and cabin air filter (terrible filter position).

This is what the manual says :

So you check the tires, air filter and do a non-authorized inspection/change related to drive unit. I can only imagine what you charge for this. Do you also inspect window tint and under-coating?
They remove the door hinges and oil them and make sure they are torqued to spec. Then they removed seats and oil the vegan leather and Retorque them to spec. They also polish the metal on the Tesla with tears.
@@hayden8693 That is very important because Tesla is known of not using the correct torque to fasten stuff, like the seat. Sometimes they do not fasten it at all.
"non-authorized"?! The manufacturer have some kind of disillusioned thinking of that the car does not need service. But that is complete rubbish. The oil in the motor as an example - there is no such thing as a lifetime oil. For the manufacturer, "Lifetime" = warranty period. That's it. Change the oil in the motor at least every 100.000 km. More often if you drive harder than average person.

My 2015 Ford Taurus SHO has only had a transmission fluid and cooling system flush. That’s it. Sounds like Teslas require more maintenance. I guess that is progress🤣
Here is a general maintenance schedule for the Ford Taurus SHO:
Oil Change: Typically, you should change the synthetic engine oil and oil filter every 5,000 to 7,500 miles or every 6 months, whichever comes first.
Tire Rotation: Rotate your tires every 5,000 to 7,500 miles to ensure even tire wear.
Brake Inspection: Inspect the brake pads, rotors, and fluid at least once a year or during each oil change.
Coolant Replacement: Replace the engine coolant approximately every 30,000 miles or according to the manufacturer's recommendation.
Transmission Fluid: Replace the transmission fluid every 60,000 miles or as per the manufacturer's recommendation.
Air Filter: Inspect the engine air filter every 15,000 miles and replace it if necessary. The cabin air filter should also be checked and replaced as needed, typically every 30,000 miles.
Spark Plugs: Inspect and replace spark plugs as needed, usually every 60,000 to 100,000 miles, depending on the type of spark plugs installed.
Belts and Hoses: Inspect belts and hoses regularly for signs of wear or damage. Replace them as needed.
Battery: Regularly inspect the battery for corrosion, loose connections, or damage. Replace the battery every 3 to 5 years or as needed.
I never had any real problem with the pins on the brake caliper. The problem is that the piston gets stuck because of rust and/or that the pads get stuck because of the rust. Living in Sweden and my brakes looks like shit already after one year. Wet, cold, salt and shit. Everything rusts.
Also funny to see this because "Tesla, no need for service!" and then all this. Because, it is a car, and cars needs service. And that alignment, i have never had my Volvo on alignment. You can just check the tires and you will see if it out and needs a fix.
So, it does not need less service than a gasoline car.
All this cost $581 as stated by the video poster in another comment. This was after a year of ownership with an unknown amount of miles. And a lot of it was likely just recommended to the customer by the service shop, and not required at all.

I use to work for Service at Tesla
Teslas are more expensive to insure than many other cars because of their high repair costs, which increases the cost of collision coverage. Maintenance too.
My Tesla Model 3 out the door cost a little over $47,000 when it was all said and done. Insurance on my Model 3 (full coverage plus gap and uninsured motorist coverage) is about $180 a month. My previous car (2021 Acura RDX) cost around $48,000 when it was all said and done. The insurance on my Acura (same coverage as the model 3) cost was about $160 a month. Maybe you are getting your information from bad drivers?

Not a full service, you didn’t replace the brake fluid (which you can’t without access to TB3) also you’re wrong you don’t need to change the oil inside the drive unit. Even if you wanted to (even though you cannot) you must run the oil pump in order to properly fill the drive unit (which you won’t be able to do because you don’t have access to TB3) That being said just take your car to the Tesla service center
That being said, there is no such thing as a 'Tesla dealership'. Tesla sells direct and service centers are also owned and operated by Tesla employees.
Of course you should change the oil in the gearbox. You drain the oil, you fill the correctly volume in the fill plug. Done.
And they say, Tesla is Maintenance-Free. Its a matter of time mechanics find ways to nickel and dime customers for service. Thank you for this vlog. Watching it made me realize, there's no savings in buying a Tesla. I'll just get a gas guzzler car.
the maintenance here is the same for any car. Maybe a bit more frequent tire and brake service due to the high torque. Any car will wear and tear and need maintenance.
Why does the front end need aligning every year? I don’t think I’ve had to have an alignment on any car I’ve had in the last 20 years. It sounds like a money making service for Tesla that should not be needed. Unless Tesla front ends are wonky.

If you’re in a place where roads are riddled with potholes, you want to do it way more often than 3-5 years. Never heard that interval for alignments by any professional in this industry

They're not new, but conventional cars typically have jack points built into the frame that makes using the hydraulic jacks visually accessible. Tesla is one of the fewer manufacturers that omit this....

I just did my fourth tire rotation at 25,000 miles, they still look great!

I have had 3 Teslas for a long time and Tesla does NOT recommend any 1 year service - it's even in the onboard digital manual! Look it up on your Tesla screen. This is a total waste of time and money and you risk damage from removing parts from technicians with very little experience working on these cars. There is absolutely no reason to do this. Of course they do not recommend it because that violates their disillusioned idea of that their cars do not need service. They build their marketing on that scam so then they can not recommend it of course.
And no risk of damage, of course. It is a fucking car! nothing special at all! A CAR. You know, wheels, brakes (probably from Bosh or other well known company).
There is ALL reason to do maintenance like this. And to change the oil in the motor, minimum every 100.000 km.
And Tesla is NOT the best car and NOT the safest. That is pure bullshit.
But they are best of being worst considering build quality. That at least is an achievement.
@@Xanthopteryx True. Teslas do need some service. I try to get my calipers serviced at least every 2 years. Tire rotation is a no-brainer. If your alignment is out, you need to take care of that. I use silicone wipers; they last longer than one year. Cabin filters may or may not need to be done every year; that depends on conditions. At some point, cars need dampers, joints, and bushings. Suspension doesn't last forever, particularly in a heavy car. That's certainly not a yearly job though.

Because of our climate, and all the shit on the roads (studded tires rip asphalt and stone particles, and some roads are graveled instead of salted, and then the cold and ice and shit on the window) spraying on the window during winter.

I wager the preventative maintenance here will exceed the cost of replacement, except for the tire rotation. The value of the EV is if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The smart money will run the other way.
If you don't fix it it will break. Because... its a fucking car, just like any other car. You would be amazed by the amount of cars, including Tesla!, that fail vehicle inspection here in Sweden, already on their first inspection that is done three years after your first registered it. Yes, they fail. And Tesla is especially bad when it comes to linkages to the wheel. And the lights that are not adjusted correctly.
Some of it, maybe, but if you live where they salt the roads, I wouldn't ignore the caliper maintenance. You know they're going to ream you if you need a new caliper.
I think the point is this. If you do something that prompts service, e.g., spend a season on salted roads,or tracking your car, sure you’re going to potentially need service. However, the notion of “annual maintenance” is mostly bullsh1t. There’s nothing magical about 10,000 miles or 12 months. You’re welcome to disagree. Your money.
@@samlc7 We have annually inspections here in Sweden (three year after first registered - and you would be amazed of the number of cars that do not pass! (yes, Tesla are very far from the best car on this)), then two years after that, then every year. The problem if you do not take care of your car and they find something that is bad (they have small issues = fix to next inspection, otherwise fail - and they have large issues = fix within 30 days and come back - and in serious cases you can not even drive the car from inspection but have to have it towed), is that it will give you more headache because now you suddenly have only 30 days to fix stuff, and you have to get back for a new inspection - costing time and money.
We do all this for safety. As, said, even three years old (new!) cars fails way too much. A common problem on many of those are linkages to the wheel. And, yes, Tesla once again... They also check now if the battery is properly fitted with no loose screws and nuts. And they connect to the car computer to read fault codes, some of witch they do not care but some gives you a fail. Also, worn tires can give you a fail. And of course brakes - they are tested thoroughly on a brake testing machine. Must be good braking action and even brakes. Also the parking brake of course. @@Xanthopteryx Smart ICE mechanics know that their trained skills are losing relevance as EV numbers grow, so they come up with things like this to offset lost business. Nothing wrong with that, people need to eat. Smart EV customers should look at the facts and resist giving it up due to scare tactics.

@@jdesmo1 Yes is is very recommended to do that. It is a gear box. With high speed rotating gears. And they wear. And the oil wear. Just as oils do. You are stupid if you do not change it at least every 100.000 km. More often if you drive harder than normal people.

That a lied that shop can damage lithium battery 😂. I work at Tesla factory built 2000 car per day. You can jack car anywhere on battery. You don't need any special bs like this technician said.

Tesla mechanics lie. This is a car. Nothing strange about it. A normal fucking car. And it needs service. Check important fasteners to see if they are still to spec, lube hinges and other movable parts, check for play, filter, and more. Here in Sweden we have mandatory vehicle inspection. After three year from registration, then after two, then every year. They have now included special BEV inspection point: To check if the battery is fastened correctly. You would be amazed of how many Tesla and some other brands that fail first inspection, only three years after new!
