  • Yep, you read that correctly...
Not only are we putting these basses head to head (and testing you in the process to see if you can actually tell the difference!).
I'm also giving them away... and a bunch of other great bass gear too. In fact, in total I'm giving away over $20,000 of bass goodness!

I had a Fodera and really wanted to like it. I finally had to accept the fact that I was suckered into thinking I was getting something special when in reality, the only thing extraordinary about it is is the price -- and the hype. I sold it and with the money I bought an American Fender (much better) an Ibanez (much better and much better looking) and a Squire J for knock around town gigs and rehearsals and a 5 string Squier Jaguar which is surprisingly good. And had money left over. Best move I ever made.

Good for you. I’m 50 years old now and have been playing bass since I was 14 years old. I love expensive basses and I’ve played tons of them and I can honestly say a good bass guitar shouldn’t cost more than 3 grand TOPS. You can buy a great high quality bass for 800 to 1,000 bucks. Those custom shop Fender Jazz basses that are like 8,000 and so on
. It’s just hype

period.

Don't disagree, but also bear in mind where Fodera guitars are made - this likely results in having to pay their staff more, pay more for rent etc. I think beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder when it comes to anything handmade - and it's hard to put a price on it for someone who loves the look of a Fodera! :)

@@primovictorian so what, that doesn't warrant 15k. It's more of an art piece/collector's item than a working musician's instrument. And even considering that, it's still way overpriced.

  • @amc8038
    @amc8038 Pƙed 5 lety +17

While the Fodera is definitely great and has fantastic tone and sustain, I honestly prefer the Sire because it has significantly more tonal options that really expand the range of what you can do with the bass. Plus, the Sire is way easier to upgrade without damaging the core of what the instrument is. Although, I have to say that the Fodera is probably better for studio work.
Overall, I think the Sire is more of an instrument, and the Fodera is more of a work of art.

Earlier this week, I started having some nasty nerve pain in my left hand that made playing my bass virtually impossible. Then last night, I thought about your glove and decided to give it a try. Could tell bass (2) was the Fodera because it had a more "passive"/ single pickup sound than bass (1). When you said that the Sire is active, it made sense why it seemed so much punchier as well.
I also keep relistening to the groove you had going because it's so good and each time I appreciate one bass more than the other (my preferred bass keeps switching though!!!!)
Edit: You clearly had a bias towards the Fodera based on facial expressions as well 😂
Edit 2: Interestingly enough as I keep listening (on around the 10th time now) I'm starting to prefer the Fodera

I guessed the opposite of reality. I thought the dual jazz pickups were pushing the brightness up on the second bass, but it was just an amazing sounds coming out of the single pickup. They are both beautiful.

The sire has the sound I like, did you hear that percussive low end when he strikes the string, oh boy! It's kinda like the Music Man signature click (as an example) only on this bass it's percussive...

I like the #1 bass more and I thought it was Fodera based on your happy grin. Opposed to angry grin on #2. Next time need to close eyes and just listen.
To be honest I am just starting loving bass and maybe I'm used to cheaper bass sounds. Still I liked #1 more.
Great channel. It really reinforces my willingness to learn bass.

An observation. Coming from the outside not being all into basses exept just playing what Ive got I have to say the Fodera stuff seems to be great brand name work most of all. Like PRS in the guitar world. PRS are over engineered like s 80's Mercedes to the point where a seasoned player no longer actually notice a real increase in performance that matches the enormous leap in price tag. Undoubtedly better built and technically more beautiful, but it doesn't really offer any more utility. To get people to spend that kind of money takes great brand naming. My OLP also has much longer sustain than necessary for any music I've ever played, but it was 250$ or so new.

2nd fodera cause you heard that the fodera sound was tighter and sort of „heavier/stronger“

Insane killin' fat sound from the Sire V9, thanx to Sire & Marcus Miller to design so amazing instruments at this incredible cost, best deal ever..... Already have a V7 Vintage Swamp Ash, sounds incredible!!!! Big up Scott for making all your free courses so nice!!! On the second part, the sound of the Fodera is just woooooow with no control, no volume, no tone, nothin'!!!!

    2. Sire
My take is: Felt like 1 had better low end fidelity, it had a personality; 2 helped showcase the player's personality.
ETA: Scott's playing at 7:07 felt reminiscent of Bass 2.. hm

I liked both sounds but I can tell that the fodera had Scott way more excited about playing. They say it's more about the fingers than the actual instrument but you have to admit that some instruments engage the player way more than others.

I gotta say I personally prefer the tone of the Sire, but it shows how you can sometimes ‘listen with your eyes’ because I expected to be able to instantly pick the Fodera and think it was ‘better’. Great to see that awesome tone doesn’t always have to cost 3 times as much as my car!
