Paul McCartney, Lemmy, Chris Squire, Cliff Burton, John Entwistle, Phil Lynott, Robert Trujillo, Geezer Butler, Glenn Hughes. At some point or other, these and many other household-name bass players have wielded a Rickenbacker 4001 (1961-81) or its successor the 4003 (’82 to date), and what a joyous noise they make, too.
Sure, the Ricky looks a bit nuts; certainly, it sounds a bit eccentric. But it’s a stone-cold classic bass guitar that cuts through the most unfriendly mix and will be your friend for life. Don’t believe us? In this lesson, we’re taking on some of the Rickenbacker’s greatest moments. You’ll also get note-for-note breakdowns of bass lines on which the Rickenbacker really shines.

Song?
Scott def has some bipolar disorder going when it comes to the Ric
IM drawn to also
C’mon Scott and Ian. This is so click-bait-y. Everyone knows about this. Yes, epic-ly funky. Secret… no
I have a 4001 1973 checkerboard inlay
I find it hard to transition into and out of tapping and to control dynamics with other styles in the same song
I think he did pretty damn good for his playing style, of course he's not do Steve's gallop perfect, I can't imagine trying to play to a gospel song I dont know?? 🤣🤣🤣
Chris Squire is THE Rick bass sound. I think you should add your Rick to the next giveaway.
Henrik is just a beast! Saw him live recently at the Fonda and it was freak'n amazing! On a side note, what cameras were used for this interview? Love the look here!
Sharon's idea about learning it vocally first has changed my life!!! Incredible work
It was luthier Roger Rossmeisl who designed it. He also did the Fender Coronado, btw.
Fretting the fret there is like the very first thing that I learnt when I started to learn how to play bass. Been playing for 20 years now.🤘
Your '73 is almost the spit of my '72 ❤ Same wear as mine (including thumb dent) only mine has a bit more wear on the arm rest... and no pickup cover of course.
Very cool!
You guys should check out the entire cowboy carter album. There's a lot of Bass throughout the album.
It's been declining for 15+ years. I remember going to shows in Portland(the original) and seeing these new (hipster?) genre, acoustic bands, none had a bass instrument outside of a pump organ. As a bass player looking for collaborators, I found nothing outside of classic rock and country bands (and of course orchestras), and gave up looking around 2015. Hopefully it's changing.
Yes, WE WANT MORE!!! ❤❤❤
I was young, preteen..
always a good video, thanks guys
Run the neck pickup into an Ampeg, the bridge pickup into a Marshall. I want that exact Ric but in Fireglo with the checker binding. I do love the sound of a Ric, but the bridge spacing is the most annoying part for me. I mostly play on Jazz bass and similar instruments with wide spacing at the bridge and narrow at the nut. I do use the blending of pickups sometimes on the Jazz, but mostly both on full. Oh, and yeah, I love Spacehog, I even saw them live back in the 90s.
Please have Buddy Zabala (bassist from the 🇵🇭)on one of your episodes ♥️
Uzeb :)
Rick crushes
Had two 4001 basses. Once I got my 77 B.C. Rich eagle bass I got rid of them and never looked back. Way over priced for what they are. They are cool as hell but just not for me.
McCartney sanded his 4001 to be more comforatble and removed the pickup cover. Not sure about the "no palm muting" idea. Watch Wings Over America (where his Rickenbacker sounds amazing) and you'll see Paul muting.
The espresso lyrics are funny too ....
He's funky as hell, I follow him, and put a few people on to him.
Hi Scott, it's Alfonso from Pompei (yes it does exists a new town next to the ruins!)...just to tell u how much I appreciate ur lessons...thanks!
I do play and practice complicated stuff but also really appreciate simplicity and work on the basics a lot, foo fighters is some of my favourite music and the bass is purely the foundation most of the time
Gary Karr.
I refuse to believe he has never heard this before!
The 3rd and 5ths are used a lot in Salsa music
Great video about a great bass!
Fantastic video thank you
How do you play the triplets solo part at bar 47 and 48? B flat m7 to E flat 7. Does anybody know the targeting or fingering of those eight triplet beats? Because I can't find any information about those 2 bars on CZcams anywhere. Scott! HELP!
and playing on hard mode with those nails too!
scott pilgrim
Отлично звучит!
Married 2 kid's working all the time . No i don't remember .
Idont have to scoff at this technology I just ignore this rot.
PLEASE listen to Desert Eagle by Beyoncé. The bass in that song is FUNKY.
To me, the ric has a certain bite to it that you just can't get anywhere else. I put just a hair of overdrive on my amp and boost some low mids, and it's disgustingly gritty while still cutting through two guitars. To me, that makes it worth putting up with the two truss rods and all that nonsense
and the Kubicki neck is 34 laminates I believe
Kubicki.......all day.
What about feetless
You could not possibly appeal more to my cupidity. Oh, I want one. As much because it would be a nightmare to tune as anything else. But seriously, I like that deep, muddy prog sound that feels like the flu and this seems a perfect fit.
What kind of seizures do you have when you play?
for a part 2 maybe, ''punk it up by infectious grooves its nice too !! great video !
Rick James!
You guys are so much more respectful of pop music...than like...Rick...you know !
