    Justin is not only one of the most skilled, gifted, and knowledgeable bassists(and drummers) in the business who has mastered his craft, but he's also an intelligent, humble, and chill dude!!! Everything he plays is a bass masterclass and he's a masterclass of playing fills without overplaying and being a distraction! He reminds me of the late great Aaron Spears who played some INSANE EXTRATERRESTRIAL drum fills and SOME HOW NEVER MISSED THE ONE!!! Yes, he plays some incredible basses but HE makes his basses SING!!! Thank you for an OUTSTANDING INTERVIEW!!! I'm inspired every time I see Justin play and hear him speak!!! Thank God for Justin Raines!!!

      Absolutely man! Just wanna throw Matt Ramsey (Kirk Franklin’s bassist)if u didn’t know about him. That guy and Justin Raines are easily top 3 along with Sharay Reed in my opinion. Their playing styles are different but Matt is super melodic with his playing, picking and fills. Check him out if u haven’t!

    • @gimmeagig
      @gimmeagig Před 2 měsíci +1

      I notices that he keeps his thumb anchored on the B string yet he keeps the other strings from ringing. I play like that too. (just not nearly as well). Is he using the right hand pinky and the ring finger to mute? I have not been able to make that work, and the floating thumb technique throws me off too.

    • @KeithCopeland778
      @KeithCopeland778 Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@gimmeagig When I switched from 4-string to 5 and 6-string bass, it took me a while and a lot of practice to adjust to the floating thumb technique. It's automatic now even when I play a 4-string. It takes putting in the work and patience.

    Justin's MTD Saratoga always sounds so clean and well balanced no matter where he is on the neck. I know part of it is just his play-style, but not every bass signal comes out that even throughout the frequency range. Sounds killer!

    What a great interview !
    What I love is that when you listen to the really GREATS like Justin, they are always so humble, kind and down to earth.
    Plus you can feel what a great teacher he is through the way he is able to "simplify" things that look very complex.
    Justin's playing is so fluid and groovy... I see the similarity with Richard's fluidity.
    Man, I discovered Richard Bona during a small festival in France in 2002 or something. The miserable guitar player that I was was at the front row,
    Man, he blew my mind. He had it all: the groove, the technic. Plus he sings like a God.
    But I think I prefer Justin's playing because I think his playing his less "busy" than Richard's. Richard is really over the top sometimes !
    Ian and Scott, you guys are great interviewers.
    I've been a member of SBL for nearly a year now and I've learnt so much thanks to you, even if I'm not the most consistent student outhere.
    I've praticed bass more in nearly a year than in the previous 13 years I played with my metal band as a self taught bass player.
    Keep up the great work all you and God Bless you Justin ! You're a Gem !

    I love the fact ….and am also amazed that he barely moves his hand when slapping. That’s cool! Love the way he sounds

    Man... Justin Raines.. arguably my favorite Bass Player of all time. I love his technique, discipline, groove.. just name it.. And more so his in-the-pocket licks.. like the one at 36:37 that made both Scott and Ian say "Yeah" as if it was rehearsed.. I found myself also saying the "Yeah" in sync.. Long life to Justin Raines!

    What a FANTASTIC find!!! I didn't know who Justin was by name, but You started the video with my favorite song 'Rejoice' and I finally got to learn who played it and enjoyed the entire video. Didn't have time to watch it all but literally couldn't turn it off. How inspiring and motivating! THANK YOU SCOTT, IAN AND JUSTIN!!! 🔥🔥🔥

    What a great interview and what a player! I must admit that I wasn't familiar with Justin before I saw this but I have to say that I found this interview really inspiring and you can just see that he is a great teacher. Even just in the course of that video he shared some awesome techniques that I am definitely going to incorporate into my practice routine. Look forward to checking out more of his work.

    So Good! Great questions by Ian about distraction and celebration and great answer by Justin. What I’ve learned is that it is also a culture thing. Different things can distract in different cultures. It’s having that balance of being you and play with freedom while still being able to adjust to the culture of the people.
