So pleased I’ve watched this video.. I’ve been doing the leg extension and also forward lunges for rehab… my knee seems to be getting worse (my other knee feels aggravated too) had keyhole surgery last year (2 meniscus tears) I’ll definitely be trying the reverse lunge now and missing out the leg extension. Thank you so much
Totally agree with this video. I do reverse lunges because forward lunges are too stressful on the knees.
how do you do reverse lunges ?
@@debbiec6216 it is last exercise Will talks about, watch the video
@@debbiec6216watch Will’s video. He demonstrates reverse lunges in this video; as the preferred substitute for regular lunges where the leg comes forward and puts the stress on the knee. The leg goes backward and you are working the front leg.
Great to hear you agree!
Ever heard of the knee over toes guy ?
Exercises that may be damaging your knees :
1. Inner Range Quads
2. Knee Extension Machine
3. Forward Lunge
Alternatives:
1. Straight Leg Raise
2. Leg Press Machine
3. Reverse Lunge
You when the internet today! Thank you! ☺
Thank you! He took forever to get to the exercises!!!
This explains why my knees were so sore after yoga yesterday. Very informative and helpful. Thank Will!

I really needed this. My sore knees keep me from doing a lot of things I still wanted to do.
Since using his suggestions here in HT Physio combined with another great CZcamsr, El Paso Physio, each with complimentary and realistic exercises for the over 50s, I have built strength my glutes and leg muscles and have not had a back or knee issue now for 3 years. 😊.
Using their guides, I have been working on my grip strength and upper body strength for the past year and am seeing great results too. 😊😊

Great advice 👍
I had a total knee replacement. The leg extension machine hurts my knee at the knee cap. My physical therapists wouldn’tlisten to me. They are not my therapists anymore. I started doing what you show here and that works so much better. Thanks for posting this video!
Even when I do partials, I still get a bit of pain/inflammation.
Great video
Thank you Sir ❤
Thanks for sharing 👍🏽
Happy to help!
So helpful Will
Thanks again for your time and help ❤

Love your instruction.
Very pleased to hear that!
Knee extension machine. Fortunately i had a trainer who told me to never use it. It seemed an unnatural movement to me so i listened to him.
Your book is arriving at my house today! Thank you for helping us enjoy movement
It sounds like you had a good trainer! Thank you for purchasing my book, I really appreciate it - I hope you find it packed full of useful content!
Thanks for the good info.
You're very welcome!
Hi Will, thank you for these particular exercises-- much needed! Your work is appreciated. 😊👍
Very happy to be of help!
Thank you for this. I hate lunges and always have! I’m starting to work out again now that my broken leg and ORIF (tibia and fibula above my ankle) are healed.
Great video, thank you! 👍🏻
Happy to help!
You wouldn't believe the resistance I've had from personal trainers and athletic trainers (U.S.) when I ask to exclude the leg extension machine from all workouts. Even as a healthy high school athlete with strong thighs I could hear the underside of my right patella crackle when doing the leg extension machine. I had very good form. My coaches just dismissed it as normal. I've now had multiple PTs advise against it. I include this entry just to warn some people they may run into those who disagree with taking out the leg extension machine. Trainers may try to talk you into using it. Hold firm. Your body. Your money. Find someone else if you need to. I haven't missed the machine at all.
Grateful
Find a trainer that doesn’t rely on machines. The only machines my personal trainer uses at his gym are treadmills, bicycles, and elliptical machines.

Very good. 10 years ago I was diagnosed with patella arthritis in one knee and leg extensions and lunges definitely made them worse.

Good lessons pointing out common mistakes and how to correct them. Plz.do for different parts
You're my favorite CZcams channel...Thanks!
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that!
Now I understand how novice are most of the trainers in gym. Reverse lunge is the one to be most beneficial.
This was helpful! I realized that lunges were bad for my knees years ago. I have wondered about that machine. I never felt comfortable with it and did very minimal with it, as I could feel that it might not be best for my knees. I love using the alternate machine that you suggested!
Thank you.
Very useful video
Can u pl guide regarding spot walking as a warm up ....whether good for knee health

Excellent video to show what is right and what is not right for damaged knees
Thank u
Glad it was helpful!
Great advice, especially for guys like me, who grew up doing these exercises, and now a lot older, we get a lot pain. Honestly over used joints. Thank you.
I recently started a bands workout and the trainer has us doing lunges. My knees really don’t like it (was told I will def need both knees replaced). Thanks for the alternatives!
I’m learning British accent while I’m watching your videos. Your videos are really helpful , especially today’s video. I’ve been doing all these harmful exercises . Good grief !!!! Thanks a lot!!!
Pleased my video came at the right time! And I'm pleased they've been helpful for you :)
Really well explained, totally agree, especially the lunge.
Pleased to hear you agree!
Appreciate it
CONFIRMED!
I got a Tibialis bar a month ago and my knees were KILLING me. Contrary, to what I'd been told, the Tib Bar did NOT make the pain subside. I had to stop using the Tib bar.
You've just explained why - - caused patella and torn meniscus injury to worsen.
I appreciate the verification.
Subscribed!
Thank you, I was doing one of these exercises and will change what I do.
Pleased my video came at the right time :)
Just accidentally find your video today and love this kind of information and subscribe your channel now. Thanks a lot 👍
I'm pleased you came across my channel, thank you for subscribing!
This is really helpful. I don’t have problems with my knees but I am carrying a bit of weight and I am trying to do as much as I can to NOT have those problems in the future. (I know losing weight is a major factor to stop it happening.)
great alternatives!
Thank you!
Tremendous advice these !!
I feel it will do me a world of good in protecting my knees from further damage, which by the way, are a bit degenerative now.
I hope it proves beneficial for you!
Thank you for this video. I did forward lunges sometime back & I am suffering from knee pain now. In future, when I get better, I'll try reverse lunges, as suggested by you. Hopefully, it won't give me knee pain.
Ugh im still in my 30s...and my right knee have been sore for no reason. No wonder because i love doing lunges and leg extension in my leg days at gym....
Very useful
Great to hear!
Thanks a lot. Very helpful indeed 👍I’m in my sixties with beginning arthritis in my knees but am keeping it at distance through helpful exercises - your channel is gold for a person like me 👍🙏😊
Absolutely 👌 From 🇬🇧
Dear Will, Many thanks for explaining it so clearly👌 I subscribed quite a while ago after watching the first video🤗 From 🇬🇧
thanks for showing reverse lunge, I'll have to give them a try
Yes you are right. First exercise damaged my knees instantly n resulted in more pain n making it impossible for me to do even leg raises. What shall I do now
I presented to my physio in March 2023 with what I thought was medial.meniscus pain in my right knee. He suggested it was likely fraying caused by osteoarthritis. He gave me some exercises that included leg extensions (what you young people call knee extensions). He suggested if I do the exercises and reduce my running load a little it should resolve within a few weeks or months. By June it was still bothering me (I was visiting the physio every few weeks), so I saw a sports doctor who ordered an MRI scan. This apparently showed some arthritis, some fraying or degeneration of the medial meniscus, an older partial tear of the ACL and some inflammation of the MCL. He advised me to continue to do the exercises from the physio. The knee pain, while fairly mild at first, slowly progressed to the point where the sports doctor recommended PRP injections at the end of the XC season, in late September (I actually won my club championship, so it wasn't very sore, until August). The PRP injections seemed to work initially, but once I returned to training, the pain returned. Then in November it became more severe. At that point I spoke to the physio and the senior sports doctor about it, but they both suggested another MRI scan would show nothing different, so just continue with the exercises. By Mid-December, I had to stop all running and even walking on the treadmill in the gym to warm up and cool down for my leg sessions was impossible. But still the advice was the same. Eventually I saw a different physio, my preferred one, but he is just so difficult to get into see, and he advised me to get a referral to see a local Orthopedic Surgeon, who ordered several xrays and another MRI. He has confirmed several things, first I do not have arthritis, second the original MRI showed deterioration in the meniscus and third there is a complex tear that wasn't in the original scan. I have a horizontal tear through the posterior horn and a partial radial tear through the body. He suggested arthroscopic surgery to clean it out. What really stands out for me is that the leg/knee extensions always made it sore, and may even have made the tears worse. I haven done any leg workouts for 2 or 3 weeks, because the meniscus pain is so bad after them. I haven't been able to decend stairs for 5 or 6 weeks, although this has finally changed this week, after ceasing the leg extensions several weeks ago. I'm likely to get the cleanout, but it hasn't been arranged yet. Thanks for the video.
Hi Will, kindly share some exercises for pateller tendonitis as it's different from arthritis. Thanks
Thank you! 59, hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, bone on bone right knee. I had Guillain Barre Syndrome and lost muscle. Hoping these help!
A good information for me ....
Glad to hear that!
