    Queen Boomer, the "Beefeaters" or Yeoman of the Guard at the Tower of London, don't just wear a costume and give tours. The big palaces/castles in London are: Buckingham Palace, Tower of London (where the Crown Jewels are), Windsor Castle (King's weekend residence and actually outside London), Kensington Palace (London residence for William and Kate) and finally Hampton Court Palace (where King Henry 8th lived). I've visited them all except Kensington Palace and I enjoyed every visit, so I don't really understand this guy's bad review, but it was funny. Admittedly I haven't been to Buckingham Palace since 2008, so the experience might have got worse. Part of the reason for the lack of facilities is it's a working palace for most of the year, so they haven't really fully set it up for visitors, but there's not really any excuse now it's been an annual thing since 1993! Windsor Castle is much better in that it has lots of facilities and isn't so crowded.

The King lives a stones throw away at Clarence House, but there are plans for him to move permanently to Buckingham Palace after renovations.
    I remember they only opened Buckingham Palace to the public to pay for the Windsor Castle fire damage. Seems like the staff can't stand the general public haha.

    Feel sorry for Mark - he should have gone with me. Been twice (for free - as my better half is a professional Blue Badge guide). Knowledge of how it works, peak times etc - avoided tour groups, queues and crowds. I had a great time on each occasion, found the staff great and everything well sign posted. Timing is everything. It is a working Royal Palace and security is very thorough and very restrictive - back packs have been used for explosive devices and photography is just a part of target recognisance - most sensitive places don't allow photography. They only opened it to the public to help fund the restoration of Windsor Castle - and they probably should stop it. It really is a tourist trap, not for locals - and it really is a fantastic money earner and a way of parting tourists from their money. Tower of London (also a palace) has the crown jewels (that is worth it!). Windsor Castle and the Royal Apartments is also a great visit. "The Crown" does NOT film inside the Palace!

    • @4Kandlez
      @4Kandlez Před 10 měsíci +2

      But they allow you to keep the backpack as long as you carry it in your hand? I very much doubt you'd be allowed to enter the palace carrying any type of bag that hadn't been checked by the very thorough security. I would guess the real reason is that wearing a back pack it's very easy to knock things over or bump into things. Photography is not allowed because people can make money from selling/publishing photographs of areas not authorised by the palace, basically the palace has copyright on all of its imagery.

    • @HankD13
      @HankD13 Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@4Kandlez All true. Trouble is with backpacks they do get in the way - and each time I have been searched it is pretty cursory. Photography allowed has people using flashes, dawdling and clogging it up - timed entry limits entry numbers, but they need people to keep moving through. Like I said, my two visits, one quite recent, had no issues at all.

    Good point about the Acropolis in Athens - we were advised to arrive for the opening time and go straight to the temples at the top, which results in you getting the main attraction to yourself (more or less) for a good half hour. As for the museum on the approach, someone wryly pointed out that the best part of the Acropolis site are in the British Museum, so no need to pay to visit the one in Athens.

  • @MarlynMeehan
    @MarlynMeehan Před 10 měsíci +2

    My daughter and 8 year old grandson travelled down to London from Scotland for a few days early August. They had booked tickets for the Buckingham Palace tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. No complaints. It was while the Scottish schools were still on holiday but the English school holidays hadn't started yet so maybe it wouldn't be quite so busy. They had no problems getting seated at the cafe either. I would say any major tourist attraction that is only open to the public for two months every year is never going to be quiet.
    I would hate to be behind some of these people with these huge back packs. They pay no attention to who might be behind them and just about knock them unconscious every time they move.
    The 'no photography' rule in these places is usually for security reasons, which I think is perfectly understandable.

    The Tower of London is definitely worth a visit. It may cost about 30 dollars each but it's worth it, visitors usually spend three hours in there, there's such a lot to see. A thousand years of history and tradition. Like Queen Boomer says, getting a guided tour by one of the 'Beefeater' guards is the best way to experience it. Quick tip, like Disneyland, go in as soon as they open and get in the queue for the Crown Jewels as soon as you enter, that way you'll avoid a 45 minute queue later in the day.

One of which is Megan Clawson, an alumnus of the school I was a pupil at. She's done several CZcams and Instagram videos about her life living in the Tower. Other royal residences are Clarence House, Windsor Castle, Kensington Palace and St James' Palace. Hampton Court Palace, a favourite of Henry VIII, is now the headquarters of the charity Historic Royal Palaces.

    If you do visit the UK - worth doing a couple days in Oxford - a whole bunch of great free Museums + Galleries.
    Accessible toilets are a big deal if you have a disability.
    I suppose it's a kind of vengeance - in my pre-disability days I got trollied + did a wee in that big fountain out the front (just sat in it on a scorching hot day + "release"), think the guards ignored the sitting bit thinking I was cooling off ;)
    Cheers or listening to my TED talk lol
    Tower of London for the jewels I think + if you "do" London, google UK school term times + visit in the Autumn - it'll be a lot less busy in geneeral.
    Museums > Royal stuff. Tower Bridge has some genuinely awesomely helpful staff. St Paul's was also pretty good. London museums are generally free/donation, but regardless when you go - EARLY. I'd definitely do Oxford over London for chilled out versus what you get to actually see "easily".
    Worth speaking to staff wherever you go to get good pub/food recommendations from someone that knows the area and can steer you somewhere good too ;)

    In terms of the flag, if the Royal Standard is flying, the King is present at the Palace, if the Union Flag/Jack is flying then they aren't.

    Not surprised. They only started tours after it caught fire and Lizzie had to justify the repair bill. I can well imagine there's resentment at being reduced to a tourist attraction by the staff if they different duties when it's closed to the public.
    The Royals don't pay their staff well at all either.

    Sad to say but the Queen is no longer there regardless of the flags so I agree with you - corrected something sent at work today which said Her Majesty's when describing one of the tax services - With the flags if the Union Jack / Flag is flying - ie the British or UK flag as you may know it as the monarch is not present at Buckingham palace. When the King (now) arrives at Buckingham Palace (or any other palace) the flag flying is lowered and one known as the Royal Standard is flown - you may have seen it (also on the cars) hard to describe, but divided into 4 - top left quarter 3 yellow lions on a red background, top right a single red lion on a yellow background - bottom left a yellow harp on a blue background - bottom right repeat of the top left - if you watched the Queen's funeral it was the one that draped Her Majesty's coffin.

    Dr Mark Felton is a national treasure and should probably be our prime minister. Believe me there are so many places better to visit in our amazing country than shitty old Buck House, spend your money wisely, it's amazing how many wonderful places here are free, just asking for a donation. It's a lovely country for history lovers with something around every corner.

    All Crown Jewels are kept in the Jewel House of the Tower of London ( by Tower Bridge)
    The Tower of London WAS once classed as a palace as well as a prison and still holds the remains of one of Henry VIII wives (Anne Boleyn)
    And where many executions took place throughout the ages.
    It’s open to the public and is probably far more interesting to walk around than Buckingham Palace, with the added advantage that there are plenty of ‘Shitters’ (restrooms to Americans) available for your convenience should you suddenly feel the need to park your breakfast while on your visit.

    To be fair, we went AFTER the Mark Felton review. Maybe they were ordered to shape up! If so, I may have Mr. Felton to thank for it..
