In the first episode of "Allah in Europe", Jan Leyers begins his journey in Bosnia. He visits the capital of Sarajevo where he gets a shave by a female barber. This first impression of the rather modern Islam of Bosnian Muslims is confirmed by the sisters Emina and Nermina Hodžić, two successful fashion designers. They believe their city to be very open and tolerant.
But this was not always the case. Bosnia's history is overshadowed by the war between Serbs, Croats and Bosniaks in the early 1990s. The memory and grief are still very present and tangible. Jan travels to Srebrenica, the site of the genocide in 1995. Ahmed Hrustanović lost his father, uncles and grandfathers. Together they visit the grave of his father in the cemetery of Potočari.
Back in Sarajevo, Jan meets with Damir. The entrepreneur used to live in the USA, but returned to his home town where he feels that Islam is purer and stronger. He introduces Jan to a mystical Sufi Order in Sarajevo.

What is the future of Islam in Europe? How hopeful can we be on an European, enlightened version of Islam? Is that something Muslims themselves actually want? And will it be possible to overcome the Europeans’ distrust of Islam?
Jan Leyers goes in search of answers. He heads off to Sarajevo, Budapest, Vienna, Hamburg, Paris, London, Copenhagen and Malmö. He listens to the voice of experts and the word on the street and talks with religious men and women, with ex-believers and new converts. What do they hope for and what are their concerns? In this series, Jan stays true to his style: nuanced and respectful, without shying away from controversy.

What you are saying is islamically right. However, for an outsider and even for vast majority Muslims, there are huge differances in the way Islam is practiced culturally, from saudi, pakistan, iran, indonesia etc and each of them believe their mode is correct. Islam is a broad set of principles. within these broad principles, living islam can be differant based on time and place. Islam does not envisage a world where everyone dresses like arabs , speaks arabic and looks the same. Quran says that Allah created differant groups/tribes , so that they identify each other. So, diversity is a design of Allah to be preserved. Diversity in practice is inherent. Only need an open mind.
I hope european muslims create a dynamic living Islam, as it was practiced by prophet and early muslims, rather than the asian fossilized static interpretations of Islam. Throw away a lot of unnecessary books written centuries later which has taken precedence over Quran.

When I worked as tourist guide for city of Sarajevo ,some 44 years ago , at the classes about history of the city we where briefly informed about Sufis / dervishes and some Sufi places / tekije in the city , but we never actually visited or attended sufi gathering and Zikr .I only felt that this places are very secret mystic places , I never dreamt that one day in future will be open for my own heart .I was not brought up in any religion .
I heard one time from my maternal grandmother that her father was Sufi sheikh in period before First World War .She mentioned “ his dervishes would visit him and stay all night in the tekke , she was very small but she remembered sound of HU resonating trough the night “, she was only 6 years old when her Sheikh father passed away , even if I asked she could not share anything more about this “ strange “ sound of Hu and this spiritual practices .
Some decades later , trough internet i was guided to some website about Sufis here in this country where I’m now .
I saw it and kept visiting even I could not understand entire text in English, was not interested in religion or spiritual path except as only interesting information , my family is mix family and I did not have any plans to become Sufi / dervish .But something was pulling me to keep visiting that website .
Than some chain of events brought me to place of Sufi gathering and my first taste of beauty of the zikrullah …this was 20 years ago .
Damir is right in his statement “ who ever taste zikrullah is always longing for it “ .( as the words of one Ilahi says “who ever taste love , will never be the same “).
I feel so blessed for being invited to the Sufi path .
If you decided to take a deeper look in the history of Sarajevo , you will be surprised by the number of Sufi places of gatherings - tekije in Sarajevo throughout past centuries .You will discover very rich treasure of Sufi path in Sarajevo and Bosnia .Inshallah

I just watched the whole 8 serie and I just want to thank the journalist Jan for this amazing work he did. An overlook to islam in Europe that just blowed my mind in understanding. I wish my country Italy needs to watch this series so baldi. Italian people and politicians are just so provincial! Have no idea about islam today in Europe and judge either nothing or just go for islamophobia. Many Italians even dont feel so much as Europeans. It is so short sighted...
