Across The Balkans: Croatia’s Muslim Minority and Belgrade’s Only Mosque

  • The oldest Muslim communities in Europe live in the Balkans, where they emerged during the time of the Ottoman Empire. Muslims in the region have historically faced displacement, massacres and discrimination even when they make up more than half of the population in several countries. In Croatia, Muslims only make up 1% of the population, but the EU member is often held up as a model for how well Muslim minorities can form a seamless part of European society. Aksel Zaimovic went to find out why. Plus, Aadel Haleem visited Belgrade’s only mosque to see what life is like as a religious minority there.
Across The Balkans is TRT World’s new programme, hosted by Nafisa Latic, that explores the issues and fault lines shaping Southeast Europe today.

We always considered sole native muslim community still existing in Romania (the province of Northern Dobrogea) as locals.
They're here even before the Ottomans and before modern, independent Romanian state being
established in the 2nd half of 19th century.
The legendary Sari Saltuk Baba Dede got permission from Byzantine Emperor to install together with ten thousand seldjuk families before 14th century so more than seven hundred years ago.
All muslim families from Valahia and Moldova were expelled or left by themselves in fear for their lives and Mosques demolished after Russian - Ottoman war of 1828-1829 and occupation of the two Principalities by the Russian Tzarist armed forces which lasted until 1856 when Crimean war broke.
The muslims of Banat province (Eyalet-i Temesvar) dissapeared since long time ago in the 18th century after the Austrian Habsburgs - Ottoman war of 1716 - 1718 lost by the latest and of course all Mosques were demolished as a consequence.
Present day in Bucharest are living tens of thousands of muslims from various countries arrived during the last forty years or so but no Mosque.

I did a degree in Philosophy and Religious Studies. My Islam teacher was Sevko Omerbasic, at that time the Grand Mufti of Croatia. He always talked about how Muslims and Catholics in Croatia always had good relationship and Croatia had legally recognised Muslims as citizens before majority of other European countries.
Reason behind this is that majority of Muslims are Slavic people with the same culture like people of other faiths in Croatia, they are not immigrants with different culture. Also, majority are also secular and are more Muslim "culturally" by celebrating Islamic festivals and maybe go to a Mosque once in a while (same goes for Catholics and Orthodox). Many of the children I grew up in school that were of Muslim background acted the same way like everyone else and if you did not know their name you would never know they are Muslim.
This is why there is nice cohesion in Croatia - because people here are not fundamentalists (from all faiths) who actually believe in their religion down to the letter, but see it as part of their cultural background.

Please do not perpetuate the cultural muslim narrative. We are secular Muslims. Being secular doesn't mean one isn't pious, we are just not typically outwardly so, but MANY Bošnjaks are quite observant Muslims. This is ESPECIALLY true for the younger generations after the war because of freedom of religious expression we did not enjoy for decades.

There is no such thing as "Cultural Muslim" or "Secular Muslim" the type of Muslims you hanged out with were probably not that religious. And following all the tenets of Islam doesn't make you a fundamentalist, there are plenty of Christians,Jews, and even non abrahamic religions such as Buddhists and Hindus who follow every basic tenet of their religion, but that wouldn't make them fundamentalist? Or does that only apply to religious Muslims who don't want to assimilate into western and european socities?.
