- Back in December 2018 I got a message from a viewer asking if I'd be interested in making a video about being a Muslim in Japan. I said yes, and after more than a year, here's what life is like for Muslims who are practicing their Islamic faith in Japan.

Timely and engaging Greg, thanks for this. Japan is going to welcome the world in a few months for the Olympics, so showing these challenges may raise some awareness of the gaps that exist and how current residents successfully navigate them 😊

I'm a muslim woman wearing hijab. When i visitted japan and came into a kimono shop in akasaka, the japanese lady owner of the shop told me "your head scarf is beautiful". It surprised me ! Shesaid that with big smile and warmness. It brightens my day 😊❤

I am Japanese and I lived in Tokyo for a while, but I didn't even know that there were many Muslim people and there was a huge community like that. Anyway I really happy they feel comfortable to live in Japan. Your video is awesome. Thanks

As a British Muslim who loves watching your channel, it was absolutely lovely to see this one in particular. The guy was right, there are so many aspects of Japanese society that is islsmic friendly - the good manners, politeness, cleanliness, respect for each other - these are qualities I love about Japan.

I visited Japan 2 years ago and it was unlike anything I have seen before. People are very respectful and friendly, there's no islamophobia, food is just amazing, public transport is the best in the world, it's super safe. Basically it's the best country in the world. I wish I could live there forever.

There is Islamophobia in Japan. Japanese are very racist, they just hide it with good manners and smiles. So many groups and accounts of people that don’t want Muslims in Japan on Twitter (X now). Plus they are fighting and opposing cemeteries for Muslims in Japan now.

I think, to date, this is your best documentary yet. It is very insightful, respectful and packed full of not very widely published information (at least here in the US.) As a non-religious person I am fascinated by those who are and why they choose to believe what they believe. I would love to see a documentary (done by you of course) on the Japanese and their belief in Shinto as I have already seen your video on Buddhism. Please keep up the great work. The hadith says you can marry more than 1 if you can treat all of them equally and you all live in the same house so the children will all have a father. If you can't treat your wives equally, marry only one.

I just can't describe how happy i was while watching this video. Being a Muslim i was always curious about how muslims would be spending their lives in Japan especially when it comes to food, prayers and hijab but this couple really made me feel like how secure Japan is for Muslims and they can freely exercise their religion without any sort of restrictions. No doubt it's called developed country for a reason and that's the sign of a good society where people spend their lives according to their wills. Kudos to the man who filmed this video 💟💟
As a Christian this video made more open-minded towards the Muslim religion. In many Christian country, we have a stereotype that Muslim religion is different from us, but as I watched this vide I have realized that there is no superiority in someone's religion because we have all the same goal and that is to be good as a follower. I'm muslim wearing hijab, have been travelled to Japan for almost 4times, didn't face any 'strange' reaction wherever I go. I had experience get lost lonely in one of Japan Village, still ...I feel safe...
Then wearing hijab, somehow I get advantage that sometimes food street owners tell me with X hand sign if there are some prohibited / haram ingredients on the street food that I want to buy. That's why I love to travelling around Japan again N again.

At 1st, i thought they didnt like us as muslim, then one of ghe many gave us one and say they have halal food. I feel bad for being one sidedly thought them bad whn it could be they already well aware of our restriction.i went to iwami tottori and it was kind of out from cities. I met with students there and they are all so excited asking me where im from in broken english while i replied in broken japnese. I wang to go again!!

@@IshratJahan-bf6fw pork is the only thing they eat which we can’t besides majority of their diet is seafood which we can eat just avoid the meat and chicken but halal food is available there because of the growing Muslim population

Of course, there are some bad people lives that kill, make corruption that doesn't represent the Islam, Like everywhere on earth some bad people exist that use the religion, nation and identity for their own self wants. If people do that in Islam that doesn't represent Islam. More ever the Quran Ayat you have written, if you study the full surah or passage of those Ayats then you can check that was stated for war, that have been fought at the time of Muhammad S.A.W when disbeliever started the war and hurt the Muslims. So kindly study Islam first, It may help you better know the Muslims.
@Garuda Integritas brother in Islam, the Quran states that whoever kills one man without a valid reason (e,g, self defence or to save someone else) receives the punishment as killing everyone in all of the humanity. and to address your first point, using this statement, you can still repent for killing someone and allah forgives you. however on the day of judgement if the person doesnt forgive you for killing them, you get the punishment for the killing. i hope you will hear me out, have a great, blessed and successful day brother ☺

Relatable stuff, I'm a Japanese Muslim and I don't have much problem in Japan practicing the deen(apart from getting halal meat from a distance and that the mosque is kinda far away).

I'm a non believer, but it always fascinates me whenever i see people having deep faith in God. Islam being one of those religion where i noticed almost everyone has their utmost respect and faith towards their God. I learned about Islam a lot through this video, really giving an insight. I hope a future will come when everyone starts respecting every religion as well as the non believers like myself, and we all be smiling at each other whenever we cross paths.
Islam says, each person should be given respect on the basis of his character, and treatment towards fellow humans and other beings, and not only the basis of his/her religious practices. Even if a person is a non-believer, as per Islam, no one has the right to disrespect him/her or deny any rights. A non-believer, is sinning (against the Almighty, by not believing Him, P. S. I am sorry if I described it in a wrong way), so the matter is between him/her and the Almighty, and no human being has any right to punish or disrespect that person on this basis, on the condition that that person (the non-believer) is not attacking or harming the believer on the basis of his/her faith. So the bottom line is, Islam teaches us to give equal respect and love, even to a non-believer based on his/her behaviour and character.❤️

Hey I just wanted to clarify something when he said that some countries like Malaysia put halal logos everywhere and he doesnt know why. It is because halal is not just the type of food you are consuming but it also includes the way it was prepared, the cleanliness of the place of prep and some other important things. In Malaysia, halal certification is very strict, so if it is certified, it means that it is of a good standard :)

Halalan Toyibban. Permissible and Good. The preparation of the food is in clean condition. Halal officer check every process, ingredient and granted the certifice. I.e bubble tea, milk souce is check, tapioca is check, preservative is check..yadda2. And from what ive heard, many countries actually learn from Malaysia. some manufacturer didnt want this strict check up and resorted to other country. contrary to her husband comment, some muslim in malaysia like old people doesnt trust other country halal logo bc they perceive it as 'doubtful'.

When I went to Japan last year, I had to use google to search for mosques and Halal food. Surprisingly I found quite a few mosques in Tokyo, but halal food was a bit harder so I instead ate fish (sushi & onigiri) plus vegetarian food. But my trip in japan was very good.

as mentioned in the video, gyomu supa 業務スーパー has halal chicken, and i also noticed while looking for lentils and chickpeas, there are actually many halal shops selling many ingredients and spices for middle eastern and indian cuisine, not sure if they carry meat.
also i remember in embassy of peru or close by, they have a food shop with items imported from peru, there might be import shops next to other embassies - because there is a turkish mosque and a shop with import from turkey, maybe more places like that exist.
i haven't lived in other cities, but tokyo is a city of high contrast - old and modern, japanese yet also multicultural, everything exists in one city. i think it's nice to live in tokyo and just visit, travel to other japanese cities. foreigners are not pandas in tokyo lol, only during corona lockdowns people were surprised to see foreigners.

I personally think this video really represents Muslims life in general, or like in a non-Muslim countries. And I would agree that despites of the challenges we face, I will always be mezmerised with the feelings of being a muslim in a global community. However, I think the idea is that the more you learn about your faith the more you begin to appreciate why you should be kinder, more compassionate, more gentle. Living the deen is different than simply knowing it - information is only as good as the ability to practice it.
Even though I’m a Christian, I still loved watching this. Not saying Christians wouldn’t love to watch this, but being born into a pastors family, I’m taught to not like other religions and not accept them. But I know for me all I can do is plant that seed of what I believe and know to be true as the way to heaven and eternal salvation. I can’t force anybody to be a certain way. So just watching this, it really gives me a good perspective of what other people do as to what they think will bring them honor in the afterlife 🙏🏻

Though they are using the word 'rewards' for doing certain things, I like that all of those things seem to be based around just trying to be a better person and being courteous to others. This is something that is failing more and more in the world, especially in times where people find themselves in such a hurry, and always busy.
Originally I thought of the idea of praying five times a day as being something that would be a large inconvenience, but looking at it from the perspective of a hectic life, it is actually a very good way to be able to take some time out of your day to calm yourself and relax your mind. It bet it helps with dealing with everyday stress.
Actually in Islam you are given 'points' for everything that you do. There are positive and negative points. On the Judgment Day these points decide whether you go to Heaven or Hell.
The Prophet Muhammed said "A smile is a charity" So when you smile at a person you get positive points added into your "Book of Deeds".

I was always tired and in rush when started to pray I discover I get relax and time off, switch off from hectic life.
Also have leg pains and in namaz I feel so better and that the only time when I sit down in day.
Sadly now I am reading namaz in rush now.

The treatment to Muslim in asian country are unlike in western country. I'm from Malaysia and our neighbouring country are thailand. Thailand are not a muslim country but the people are very kind. My dad went to Japan in 1976 and he still talks about his memories from this beautiful country.One thing he has consistently metioned is that how civilized and humble Japanese people are !!!...I want to visit Japan one day!

Greg, this was so respectfully done and presented, I commend you for that. I'm a Muslim, although not practicing, so these challenges have never mattered to me personally. It's not really something I think about when I'm in a foreign country, so this made me think about things in a different perspective. I really feel for Barno, Sherzod, and everyone else interviewed here. But I'm also glad to hear that they don't face any violent islamophobia or restrictions. Japan's policy of "respect our culture and rules, and you will be respected and accepted in return" makes perfect sense, in my opinion. Respect is a two-way street after all.
Also, just have to say: I'm SO impressed by the multilingualism here. Like Barno and Sherzod speak their native languages, plus English (and so very well) and Japanese, AND pray in Arabic. That's amazing.
Thanks for the video, but I want to clarify something when people say Turkish mosque or Indian mosque, ...etc. They just refer to the architecture of it, not if the people allowed to pray in.

From my knowledge, Turkish or Indian mosque mostly refer to the language used on preaching. I think most of mosques (not the big ones) have no significant architectural characteristic from certain country (shown in the vid). And yes, mosque is open to anyone, feel free to come even if you just want to look around. :)

Religion always takes you to peace. Not matter how you practice your religion. A true religious person will have and share love for all humankind.
I like that these people are completely self-disciplined, cleanliness oriented, and dedicated to their community.
I can say that they are extremely Japanese in the sense that they possess virtues that many Japanese like me find desirable.
In my opinion, a good Muslim can be a good Japanese. The reverse is also true.

Many of these Muslims in the documentary have shown that they are quite capable of respecting and abiding by Japanese standards and maintain their own culture in a flexible and accommodating manner, the problem with the west like the UK, France and USA, is that they are far too compliant with multicultural standards, that it completely falls on itself. (That and the general fact that some immigrants really are stubbornly ignorant and that they HAVE to be told to have some level of blending in with society)
If you go to 浜松市 Hamamatsu you'll find an unbelievable amount of Brazilians, Nikkei-Brazilians or Brazilian-kei Japanese people. Despite the major Brazilian influences it remains a part of Japan and accommodates to Japanese culture.

As malaysian muslim, I just want to say Thank you so much for this video. Because not all muslims accepted or try to complete the challenges what Allah orders like pray 5 times a day and etc. We sometimes missed and make sins. And also we do this for the angels, as Muslims we're never alone we are also surrendered by a lot of angels that parys with us when we pray, so to respect their presence we have to be clean and perfumed.
"Nadafa mina aliman" which basically means being clean is a part of the worship.
Praying means connecting to God in all religions. Not just Islam.

2-their is always an extreme group in any religion
3-some of the extremest like ISIS takes verses from Quran out of context to justify their actions, that a thing that the prophet Mohammed (PBUH) warns us from doing it, so they basically do that for political reasons.
4-Iran follows a distorted version of Islam they are called Shia, and some of them they even deny the fact that the prophet Mohammed ( PBUH ) reserved the Quran from Allah ( God ) and create their own ritual that does not even exist in the Quran, and also make this persona that they call the "Imam" which is like the Pope in Christianity.
5- most of the Muslim countries do not follow the Islamic laws and try the western laws which fail miserably, and even in a country like Saudi Arabia who has monarchy system for ruling, become corrupted and try to change some of the rules and become much loose as a society will fail into it dooms very soon.
6- if you want to see the more ideal type of society look at the first 300 years of Islam cuz that is how the Muslims should live and rule in their lands with some change to adapt to the modern days.
7- for the sake of argument cuz I see this type of comment a lot I want to say for those who say that the religion is 1400 old and you should not follow it, I would say that the Islamic religion is a way of how you should live your life and how you should react with your creator ( Allah ) and how you should interact with people in generals, so no matter how much time changes humans are still humans, and when it comes to science and knowledge our prophet told us to seek knowledge from the day we born to the day we die, and even there is a story o fone of the companion of the prophet Mohammed ( PBUH ) who comes to the prophet and asks how to cut the date fruits in an Islamic way from it is trees ( cuz in that time people will ask anything to the prophet so they don't make mistakes in their practice for the religion ) and the prophet Mohammed ( PBUH ) told him that the worldly knowledge ( aka science ) is up to the people to discover and devolop but I ( the prothet ) come to tell the people the way of life. ( which is how to live your life and interact with Allah and the people around you )

if you trackback the start of those group all of it start forming after WWII and that due to the fact that they lost their trust in their own government and want to change, but their government rejects them or there is a war happening in their country like ISIS after the US invade Iraq, Taliban the soviet union tried to invade them and even the US supported them and so on.
and the main reason those group has been hated by their own country and the world is the fact that they want a unified Islamic state like before WWI and the western country especially the USA scared of that and also it is allied mainly Israel.
here now you have a group of people want change but they have been faced with violence not only from other country but some times from their own country their response would be also with violence and try to justify their actions by altering the meaning of verses of the Quran and people follow them cuz they want to change.
so again the motive behind those groups is mainly political and use the religion to move people ( familiar isn't it ?? ), and the reason those groups keep increasing is due to:
1- the increase of outer influence from non-muslimm countries mainly the USA and it is allied.
2- and the corrupt politician in their country.
then again I don't support their methodology of doing things and even if you ask any Muslim scholar they would say what they doing is wrong ( those group ).
any Muslim don't like to live in a war zone for years and every Muslim don't like to live in poverty, and any Muslim don't like to be ruled by a hypocrite and a thief, so any human being when they put in those type of situation they become vulnerable and the slimmest amount of hope they found even if they know what they doing is wrong they will keep doing it, this just human nature.
before you look at Muslims as if they are some sort of aliens they are just humans being after all and if you want to understand their action look at them from this way.
