Saw someone on TikTok making a video on how the story starts with ‘this is a true story’ and towards the end of the show you see Donny deleting his timeline police report and starting to write his story. We can see him typing ‘I felt sorry for her’ and then continuing to write the story.
Now… when he is typing this, the sound of the keyboard and the font seem to be very similar to when we see it in the beginning of the episode ‘this is a true story’.
This would mean that when we see this phrase in the beginning of the episodes, we are seeing Donny’s story, his true story. Not Richard Gadds.
This would make sense as we are seeing a true story in the eyes of a fictional character - Donny
I think people have just gone too literal with this whole thing.
    It’s a drama series.

    • @DanielaRachel08
      @DanielaRachel08 Před 28 dny +12

I believe this would then make no case in court. But they would have to break down each bit of this to clarify what they mean. Which kind of breaks the magic of storytelling, foreshadowing, etc.
This series was not a documentary, it’s a drama series.
Otherwise they would have real names, including the main character.
It’s a ‘true story’ for the character of Donny, inspired by true events of Gadds life

This type of affirmations is dangerous. It stipulates that male stalker are taken more seriously by the police which is absolutely false. There are numerous cases of women being stalked by a stranger or ex spouses and boyfriend and in worst cases, even killed. In many of this cases, the police did nothing until the abuser harmed their victim. "Approximately 15% of women and 6% of men in the United States have ever experienced stalking." (CDC, 2014).
This statement also completely ignores all the abusers in the public space who are free after confessing to horrible things to women (celebrities for exemple : C Lo Green, steve tyler, etc, etc).

The Coen Brothers put the same title card at the beginning of all their films/tv series ~ we all know it's a joke and like Reindeer, it CLEARLY says at the end that its based on but not 100% true. She WAS done for stalking in the past - MPs wife, over 10 years ago. She has history. BUT Netflix states very clearly at the end of every episode that it's fictional, based on true events, but not entirely. It's in black and white titling, in writing, so why is everyone carrying on about this? Fiona has no legal leg to stand on!!! This is typical internet bullshit! There is no case legally! Piers took a big gulp when she said there was only a year difference between them in age ~ odd thing to say, shows she's looked him up. Hope he doesn't have a busstop out front of his house. She is quite OBVIOUSLY mentally unstable. "If I DID send emails...." = 112 per day over a year ~ sure, that's normal. 🙄 Richatd can say as much as he wants that he was really fucked up. So what? Fiona didn't come out for OVER A DECADE about all this till she was attacked online by people "identifying her" that she HAD to say something. Silly her to trust Piers for a fair go, but we all make mistakes. Richard's telling a version of his life story, NEVER claiming anywhere that³³ it was all 100% true. Yes, Fiona IS mentally unstable, quite obviously. And Piers does what he always does - exploits vulnerable people for his personal gain ("of course I want clicks"). He doesnt care about either of them. The Netflix publicity office must be laughing at how easy this SHOW was to promote. She has to prove it was her, she's going to have to do complete disclosure. The case being open and shut due to them saying "I wasn't talking about you" is not that simple. They would have to disclose to the court, whom the story is portraying. If they say its not portraying anyone real then the producers of Netflix that stated under oath in Parliament have now broken the law.
The court can decide that just the fact its called baby reindeer and that she called him that as enough to conclude that it is about her. Its not very simple at all. She would not have to disclose everything if she didn't want to, just enough to suggest that its about her and they'd have to prove its not.

Netflix would have to provide information that Gadd gave them about the real stalker during disclosure. Gadd would also have to provide all the info he had too. They can't refuse if the Court directs them to disclose the info to Harvey's lawyers - that's contempt of court. They can't deny it is her at this point because they used her real tweets.
Apparently the Netflix legal dept is supposed to he very good so it is baffling as to why "this is a true story" appears at the start, but the certain parts and characters have been fictionalized bit is at the end credits. The only defense for it I can think of (I'm not a lawyer) is the "d'uh" defense: Gadd didn't record every conversation so those parts are reconstructions based on his recollections, audiences know this, so there is an assumption that a reasonable person would understand that it cannot be a blow by blow retelling of the events. It's a weak argument tho. Netflix can throw Gadd under the bus and say they had no reason not to believe him.
I don't think this will ever see the inside of a court. Harvey should be fearful of disclosure and what will be dug up from her past. Start taking bets on how many legal teams she gets thru. She might aim for a settlement but she likely would struggle to abide by any confidentiality clauses attached to it. She probably wants her own Netflix doc

Does she imagine that by doing this she can find a bit of a silver lining? What the hell is she demanding money for? She must realise that it puts her in an extremely unsympathetic light. And can we all remember that this story has not been told only once it's been told and world wide published twice!!! So while fiano tried to move on with her life Richard is milking it making as much money as he can From what's happened. Everyone is pointing the finger at her but in actual fact Richard gabb is actually the one people should look more into.

I wonder how long it will take, or could it even happen, that something more 'state' visits her and encourages her to enter psychiatric therapy. I have a horrible feeling that the general public are tossing about possible reasons for her behavior, and there does seem to be something there, and yet nobody will go and get her into treatment. I'm guessing she has nobody close to her to urge her to talk to a psychiatrist about an obvious psychological issue. What will happen to her? What will happen to Richard? If this meet and greet event story is true - her mental state is rapidly degenerating.
And now Richard Gadd must be in a state of shock watching all this unfold. Maybe, maybe not fully, worked through what happened between them years ago and now she's not only back on the scene but her bizarre degeneration is front page news.
Would the Netflix series have been as popular if it hadn't been billed as a true story and if Richard Gadd hadn't been playing himself? Either of those things would have let the sleeping dogs lie. Would anybody have gone looking for the real Martha if it hadn't been so blatant?
I believe she did what was portrayed. I also believe she is seriously deranged and probably has been for a long time. I don't think she's got any sort of grip on reality. She should have been in treatment. Even if you don't care if something extreme happened to her, in the past, to knock her into her deranged state - you must care about if the untreated Fiona will continue forming dangerous one-sided attachments to people?
