Yeah, that was a massive panic attack. His brain basically locked in place. It could've been worse. In November 1984, Enterprise sent 2 F-14s to intercept a TU-95. The bomber and a fighter bumped. The fighter tried to land despite stabilizer damage and loss of hydraulic fluid. It ended poorly. This was during an operation to go after a Soviet submarine. It turned out that the sub crew intended to defect. By the way, there was a CIA analyst aboard the carrier at the time of the crash.
The scene of the Tomcat who was on the ball shaking because of the low speed and those old engines smoking is one of my best parts of the movie! Wrapped all together in amazing music score and scenery
Most of you havent heard of the tragic back story of Cougar. Back in 1983 his best friend was killed in front of his eyes when the car he owned became possessed and tried to kill him. Happened right before his eyes. Then he crushed that car with a bulldozer only for it to try and comeback and kill him and his soon to be wife. Im sure this event tragically brought back some memories of that tragic event causing him to shut down.
This actually might happen more then people think, the modern theaters of combat are as such where we don't have aerial battles like this but probably just the thought of "this isn't training there's another pilot up here who wants to kill me" was enough to break Cougar, you can train for years but you honestly don't know how you'll react until it's for real, and Maverick was right if the MiG Pilots intention was to shoot down Cougar he would have done it immediately, he did have Missles locked on him and could have blown him out of the sky if he wanted to.
I still think about how Mav was low on fuel himself and he probably was on fumes by the time finally landed. A huge risk. The afterburner alone would've used up quite a bit.
Can you imagine being the LSO on the flight deck when this bird comes in, all over the place? I bet there was some interesting conversation down in the ready room later that evening lol.
I think among other things cougar is going to get chewed out by the air boss for failing to take a wave off. I wonder which wire he caught the 1 or 2 wire.?
I wish I could tell you that Merlin fought the good fight, and Ice and Slider let him be. I wish I could tell you that - but Top Gun is no fairy-tale world. He never said who did it, but we all knew. Things went on like that for awhile - Navy life consists of routine, and then more routine. Every so often, Merlin would show up with fresh bruises. Slider and Ice kept at him - sometimes he was able to fight 'em off, sometimes not.
Anyone who thinks they are incapable of feeling fear while they're protecting our nation's interests have no soul, straight up!!! Cougar had enough courage to face these enemy planes as long as he could. Nothing wrong he did, it's human tendency to feel fear, anxiety, stress, and every bit of emotion that he felt. I owe him that amount of respect!!!!

Cougar's guy Merlin sure isn't very helpful. "...cougar, cougar common cougar...let's do it coug...we got a little problem here, that Mig screwed him up, don't think he can make it back."
F-14 pilots like Cougar always thought it was a good idea to apply lots of mascara to the eyelashes right before MiGs mess with them. Btw, RIO's in F-14s could land the plane on a carrier in an emergency. They were trained for it.

Happened right before his eyes. Then he crushed that car with a bulldozer only for it to try and comeback and kill him and his soon to be wife. Im sure this event tragically brought back some memories of that tragic event causing him to shut down.
58 Plymouth fury! Christine!!
“Maverick, you just did an incredibly brave thing -“
Goose:is this how you have fun man
Maverick:yes
Greetings 🖕
4:16 - If I had that type of approach in the NES game I would end up in the drink.
We all did no matter what we did 😂
Can't blame cougar. He had to fight a possessed car named Christine, and Merlin was fresh out of Shawshank prison.
And remember Christine is still after him
ROYAL MALAYSIA AIR FORCE pilot here..salute chief..hope can meet great air killer like this someday.
What do you fly? A Tuk tuk?
that was funny
Hey now... We malaysians like to spend our hard earned taxpayer money on military jets too
You guys should focus more on finding lost commercial airliners and less on dogfighting
Only planes you fly are in flight sim.
Unless cougars wife was in the gas tank at that plane with him, I don't think he would've orphaned his daughter.
+Katie Bailey "Widowed" is the generally accepted term, not orphaned.
@rgtrooper13 You missed the part where I was replying to a since-deleted comment. But thanks for trying to play with the grownups. Moron.
Jack, she would have been half orphaned.
He asked if he had position to fire, as if he had missiles that shot backwards.
No. He asked do I have permission to fire..
Not backwards but ideally fighter pilots like to be in the back of the plane where heat seekers can get a good lock on the rear of the engines.
Cougar panicked because he would never see his baby if that pilot fired on him. He get scared.
My Science Project was a great movie for Cougar.
Don't forget Christine
Christine must have got to him
Looks like all my landings in flight simulator
I still think about how Mav was low on fuel himself and he probably was on fumes by the time finally landed. A huge risk. The afterburner alone would've used up quite a bit.
Can you imagine being the LSO on the flight deck when this bird comes in, all over the place? I bet there was some interesting conversation down in the ready room later that evening lol.
I think among other things cougar is going to get chewed out by the air boss for failing to take a wave off. I wonder which wire he caught the 1 or 2 wire.?
as shitty as the approach was he probably hit the 0 wire
I wish I could tell you that Merlin fought the good fight, and Ice and Slider let him be. I wish I could tell you that - but Top Gun is no fairy-tale world. He never said who did it, but we all knew. Things went on like that for awhile - Navy life consists of routine, and then more routine. Every so often, Merlin would show up with fresh bruises. Slider and Ice kept at him - sometimes he was able to fight 'em off, sometimes not.
Hilarious!
I guess the sisters didn’t let him be...
🤣
Omg haha. Brilliant.
i bet the navy misses the F-14
Yelp
True
Yep. The Navy even planned on bringing the F-14s back into Action.
Where’s my damn wing man? Maverick incoming at supersonic speed 30 seconds eta! Love it
I love helping cougars land… heh heh heh
Great cinematography, this movie is a true classic
Awesome Scene!!!!
Well this right here is why I didn't watch a film called "Top Gun: Cougar" last night.
When I leave the store and take off my mask, 2:08 is where the frame in my subconscious comes from.
Best comment I've seen for a long time 😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Cougar still is a good man and fighter.
He should change his name from Cougar too Kitten
When Couger turned in his wings, Stinger was absolutely PISSED!
Why didn't the commander say " He's a Slacker"??!
Or that he’s just like his old man...He was a slacker too!!
I watched Top of Gun for 18 yr ago, still love this movies
We’re too low, Cougar! We’re too low! Power! Power!
They should have sent Willard and Simkin.
He was a good man
Still is a good man.
I don’t think pilots call it gas... it’s not the family minivan lol
I've heard some airline pilots refer to it as
" gas". Of course its actually a kerosine based fuel ( Jet A usually) I believe the military version of that is JP-8
Open to correction on this of course 😉
Oh... I thought you just meant Cougar had gas. Got the best of him.
My #1 movie 🍿 of all time
Cougar's guy Merlin sure isn't very helpful. "...cougar, cougar common cougar...let's do it coug...we got a little problem here, that Mig screwed him up, don't think he can make it back."
I’m envious of anyone who was in their 20s when this came out. (I wasn’t born yet). Good times I imagine
Great way to bring maverick and goose into no1 contention having cougar messed up and photo pic with the mig. Original.
BETTER THAN THE REMAKE ANYDAY!!
Is the XRP-Army here? Sometimes we need a Maverick too!
"Keep sending him up". No. Wait. LOL
Cougar was good pilot he just feel dizzy and scared but he should continue in the movie because he was number one in top gun
THAT'S GOTTA BE TOUGH
F-14 pilots like Cougar always thought it was a good idea to apply lots of mascara to the eyelashes right before MiGs mess with them. Btw, RIO's in F-14s could land the plane on a carrier in an emergency. They were trained for it.
cougar needs to learn his tomcat is running outta gas next time
That would be my call sign cougar lol...
Maverick’s reckless but his heart’s in the right place
I always feel sad when they show the picture of his wife and baby ☹
im dying when goose says is this your idea of fan man
Cougar is a slacker.
Everybody gangsta until a MIG has a missile lock on you.
Any of you boys seen an aircraft carrier around here?
