  • Today, we're tearing apart my 2003 E53 X5 in order to service the radiator, water pump, thermostat, and hoses, one of the major weak points on the M54 motor! We also find out what a "failed" water pump looks like, and why it's so important to service these components before they leave you stranded.
Parts (these are for 3.0L M54 models only)
    Radiator - 17117544669 (automatic - 17107544668)
Expansion tank bracket (manual) - 17111438818
Expansion tank bracket (automatic) - 17111438819
    Water pump - 11517509985
    Thermostat - 11537509227
    Upper Radiator Hose - 11537500733
    Lower Radiator Hose - 11537508688
Lower Radiator hose temperature switch - 13621433077

Ayyy mine is an 02 5 speed same metallic grey also!! Thank you for all the information my guy!! The next clear day I have here in Texas, (probably Saturday) I'm gonna be throwing on a new radiator, pulleys, tensioner, expansion tank, belt, and water pump and it's gonna be wonderful my baby has been sitting for a month now. Before that it was sitting for a month and I fixed the alternator.. the next day my new belt snapped going down the highway. At least it had a warranty and i found it and got a new one for free lol thank you again dude!!

The HEPU metal water pump is good choice. I took the same one in my E53 X5 BMW 3.0i 2001.

for bleeding you should turn the key to position 2, get inside and turn the heat all the way up and fan speed to the lowest setting.
this should activate the 2nd electric pump that m52tu and m54 motors all should have as far as i know.
    nice video!

Good advice, and don't add too much or forget to unscrew the bleeder screw!

Great video man! Question, why you did not flush the cooling system with water several times before adding antifreeze?

You din't replace two plastic Hoses under the intake, they usually rostet because the connected to the engine block. I know it because I couldn't find slow cooling leak......

Cool how the wp had holes for jack bolts. Good design. Too bad they aren't made like that anymore

Great job Chris. Luckily, the M52 and M54 are easy to bleed. My M50B25 was a pain in the backside until I was told to put the front of the car up in the air. Later I discovered it was because of the poor design of the heater core in the dash. The core is the highest point of the M50 cooling system, not the radiator. Have a great weekend. Dutch regards, Nico.

M54 has a secondary bleeder screw that really sucks to get to.

I am wondering is this Manual transmission ? how come you didnt have to unplug the hoses from transmission coolant?

lovely video, will be doing the same changes very soon. Only negative is that the bleed procedure explanation was horrendous, very unclear what you were trying to say. Will have to find a different video for that bit.

The thermostat is only original, I see that you are installing the Wahler thermostat, two thermostats of this company died after a year of use, they kept the temperature, but there were leaks from under the heater and that's why I decided to put on the original thermostat
