      I always heard it was one of two things and it could be interpreted either way. When he spoke of writing it for Generation X he said it was inspired by a concert in Tokyo where kids would literally dance facing the mirror by themselves.. • @merlball8520
      @merlball8520 Před rokem +1

      It helped that he actually had talent as a vocalist. Punk relies heavily on style and lyrics so the vocal quality doesn't have to be that strong, and it often isn't as a result. Billy Idol transcended the genres he worked within because he was talented enough to do so.

  • @garypatrick3001
    @garypatrick3001 Před rokem +81

    Billy Idol started in the band Generation X, which was part of the late 70's British Punk scene. The song "Dancing with Myself" was originally recorded as a Gen X song. When he moved to NY to embark on a solo career in the early 80's, Idol re-recorded this song as part of his debut EP record "Don't Stop." ("EP" standing for Extended Play, which was a collection of several songs, but not enough material to considered a full "Album.") Mony Mony was also on this debut EP. Both those songs were getting some club play when Billy released his self-title debut solo album, featuring the song "White Wedding." The video for "White Wedding" really blew up on MTV in late '82/early '83, catapulting Idol into stardom in the States.

    Someone may have already answered you but you are up to almost 600 comments so I may have missed it... You asked when Billy started... He started as a guitarist for the punk group Chelsea in the 70s. He left that group with one of his band mates and became the lead singer of the punk group Generation X still in the 70s. They had success in the UK. In 1981 he left the group, moved to New York and started his solo career. Dancing With Myself was actually a hit from his band Generation X but he owned writing credits on it and reissued the song on his debut album and made it a hit for his solo career.

    Today is Triply Billy Day! (Joel, Ocean, Idol). This was one of his earliest hits... in fact, it was his first single as a solo artist (aftering being part of the band Generation-X). It didn't do much, but after the huge success of "White Wedding", he re-released it, along with this video, and it EXPLODED. Then came "Rebel Yell", and he never looked back.
    Still to come on your list has to be "Hot in he City", "To Be a Lover", "L.A. Woman" (his amazing cover of the Doors song), and "Flesh For Fantasy". And if you want to check out MUCH OLDER Billy Idol, check out "Bitter Taste", which was released only last year! (He's STILL got it.)

His style of dress and his stage antics are something I've styled myself after for years. He's also 80's. He was also one of the few white Motown artists. Songs you'll love by him- Goody two shoes, Stand and Deliver, Puss in Boots, and Strip. Also I think you might like to check out Motown's 25th anniversary special in which he sang a Diana Ross song to Diana Ross. It was brilliant. I dunno why but this song kind of reminded me of him. chalk it up to the British accents and the similar style of music, and cheekiness.

    He was already tuned In with the music video thing and he rocked it . Many many artists and bands said they would never do a “music video “ or share live footage and they fell behind . Look at Madonna , David Bowie , Duran Duran , Cyndi lauper , Queen , they thrived in this environment . Again I have to say , I love your channel guys

    He began as a guitarist in the punk rock band, Chelsea, in 1976. Left that group and formed his own group Generation X which was successful in the UK with 3 studio albums but disbanded in 1981. Moved to the US to launch his solo career in 1981. His biggest success was from 81-88.

    Even if you didn’t grow up in the 80’s , but let’s say 90’s or even 00’s, you’d still know this song and many others because of radio. We listened to radio so much more than now. So we got exposed to all kinds of music. I’m a 90’s kid but I know most of these songs so well. All just because of having radio on all the time.
    Love this song! ❤

    post-punk, pop punk. we danced 🕺 to this often back then 😆 its new wave too. I was a kid that time. oh ya, Billy is definitely punk, came out of that scene. New wave is basically punk rock and dance music fusion. some had synthesizers

    Billy Idol was in a punk band called Generation X before going solo, and this song was originally a Generation X song in 1980 before Idol did this solo version as his first single in 1981..

    Billy Idol came out of the late 70's punk scene in London. There were some strong musical divides between the punks and the teddy boys. There were some notable crossovers and Billy had a punk look but was heavily influenced by Elvis and 50's rockabilly which was what the teddy boys favored. So his look is a punk leather version of a 50's Elvis and so is his sound, even White Wedding is a punk take on surf type of guitar lick. This song was by far his biggest hit as it played non-stop on MTV, pop radio and dance clubs. Mony Mony was a later hit but it wasn't as big as this one was. That may well have more to do with Billy's notorious hell raising lifestyle at that time than it did the quality of the music though. Billy did eventually get himself cleaned up but he lost a chunk of his career in his prime.

    This is pop-punk and Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols is on guitar. Billy was a hard core British punk rocker who managed to successfully transgress the sound for the 80s and an American audience. The guy is an absolute legend.
