    • @1959rui1
      @1959rui1 Před 5 lety +27

safranebirurbo1, it's not a excuse. If the Group B incidentes was only Portugal 1986, the B's never ended.
I don't say this because be Portuguese but only one disater, even fatal, wasn't suficient to end the Group B.
If you read the FIA (FISA at the time) decision was taken due to a series of events and that the cars were becoming too powerful and moving so fast without other mechanical and security components (brakes, suspension, etc.) accompany this evolution.
Maybe it was precipitated because the new Group S (never competing) had cars with mechanical component all as it should be, but there are also many other things that have never been properly clarified

    • @samis4660

Group B was abandoned because the cars became too dangerous. Not because of spectators.

    • @787Martin

Its was a combination of both. The cars were getting to fast to handle at full capacity ( u don't have abs,esp ect) And the croud and the controle of it was getting out of hand as well. Even the drivers back then said it was not safe or just madness. But the lancia stratos is not a group b car, its group 4. The 037 and the delta s represents lancia in group b. same that there were so many shitty drives or later modified hillclimb cars in the clips. unworthy of the group b legend this...

The Stratos was a Group 4 car, predating Group B by a good ten years! Also, some dodgy examples of various cars are shown - the first clips of the S4 are a converted road car (rear lights give it away, as well as wrong rims). And the T16 at No8? The most successful Group B car of all!

  • @cschnauz

The S4 was an F1 car for the forest. It could do 0-62kph in 2.8 seconds on gravel, more like 3 seconds as opposed to 2, but I like you hyping up the numbers. In ‘86 Henri Toivonen did a lap at Estoril in it that would have put him mid pack in qualifying for that years F1 race!
The Stratos as sick as it was was a grp4 car.

8th on the grid. Although the Estoril WRC circuit was shorter than the Estoril F1 circuit that year plus as already pointed out, the F1 qualifiers that year was in the wet.

Little sidenote; the rules stated that only the mid section of the production car had to be used. The manufacturer was free to design the front and rear of the car. For instance, the mid section of the Ford RS200 was from the Sierra.
Technically, the 959 was designed to be a Group-B car, but by the time they could use it in racing, Group-B was banned. So Porsche decided to enter their 959 in the Paris-Dakar rally.
    The Stratos was not a Group-B, but a Group-4 and 5 car.

I’ve especially loved the Quattro S1 since 1982 when I was 14 years old and first watched rally races and heard that distinct 5 cylinder growl and the turbo chirp and flutter. Love that car and the Lancia at the end is fantastic as well, the power they squeeze out of a 1.8 four cylinder engine is amazing. I swear I can hear both the supercharger and the turbo sounds! And I know the difference between straight cut differential gear whine and supercharger whine!

    for the record:
the socalled group A or N needed 5000 units manufactured within 12 months instead of 4000.
    the 205 T16 had a 1775 cc engine.
the lancia stratos was socalled group 4 car which where 400 units required, like in opel ascona /manta 400.
the porsche 959 was a prototype car never homologated as a group B and only used in rally raids

Don Rowe delta s4 was the fastest and most insane group b rally car ever produced. Full stop, end of story. They were winning hands down the 1986 championship when the tragic ends of Toivonen and Cresto retired them from the competition and saw group B banned forever. The only other car that gave it a run for its money is the Peugeot 205 T16 evo2, from far away though. Audi had the huge merit of introducing 4wd in the rallying word and that gave it an early edge, but as soon as the other competitors caught up with the technology all its inner limits (excessive weight on the front, oversteer and overall poor handling) got exposed. It was a mid tier car at the end of the magic group b era. Still the best sounding of the lot though 👍🏼

The 959 content is not to great from the looks of the videos but that's because there is not much video content available, seems like it's more a 911 :P. But you should have mentioned that it could never compete, unless it was practically designed for group b. It was later used for the Rallye Dakar and just was theoretically an adjusted group b car :)

    • @jeanackle
      @jeanackle Před 2 lety

You got that quite wrong. And the actual story is much simpler: the 959 was designed (among other goals) to compete in the Group B rally championship. By 1986, Porsche had not yet produced the 200 959 cars required to be enrolled in FIA's WRC Group B class, so the 959 would only enter the competition in 1987. But Group B was cancelled in 1986 midway through that season. That's the only reason why the 959 never run (at least as official Porsche team car) in FIA's WRC.
Porsche did however enroll three 959 in the 1986 Paris-Dakar rally (a rally NOT sanctioned by FIA), where the they finished in 1st, 2nd and 6th positions. The Dakar rally has no production requirements (you can runa a one of a kind car if you want to), and that's why Porsche was able to run three cars in the 1986 Dakar.
As for the footage, although three actual 959 were raced in the 1986 Dakar, Porsche ran modified versions of the 911 in the 1984 and 1985 Dakar races. These 911 were meant to test several of the different car systems intended to be implemented in the 959 (which indeed they were).
So, if some of the 1984/85 "959" look like 911, it's because they sort of still were 911...
But, again, the 1986 Dakar 959 are proper 959.

Delta S4 for being the most insane. Audi S1E2 for being the more musical. Peugeot 205 T16 for having won it all. Honourable mention to the Lancia 037 for winning a championship over 4WD opponents/
and the obvious WTF for the Strato's being here.

Imo the S1 should be on number 1 spot in every WRC/Group B list, just because it sparked all the revolution in the sport and across the entire automative world. Put simple - if it wasn't for the S1, there wouldn't been all the rest of the great cars. 037, Delta Integrale 4s all could've never been brought to see the light of day.

I’d have a hard time picking between the 6R4 or Quattro. I mean just listen to that V6 in the Metro or that 5 Cylinder in the Audi. They are 2 of my all time favorite engine notes. Just beautiful...!

That Bozzy footage of the 205 T16 had a noob driver not worthy of the car. Didn't know how to race it and makes it look awful compared to the actual rally footage.

TrixX PC Gaming my guess is its a very expensive and historical car that they didn't want to push too crazy and possibly crash

those cars have 0-60 mph any time they want and final speed was their choice, only you can choose gear box

I personally love the Rs200. It looks really cool and it is quite quick. Just imagine, with a bit of tuning, what could these monsters do on tarmac circuits today.

I believe the Lancia S4 was 2.5s 0-60 on gravel, plus 560bhp as standard (Markku Alen said in the last Group B race they had 620bhp in a 890Kg car, plus the brakes weren't that good). Also some of the other figures are for the homoglation cars not the rally cars (e.g. the T16).
Back when I used to go to the U.K. Rallys (loved Group B) they had a stage on a race-track. Markku Alen in his S4 did it in a time that would have put him on the 2nd row of the grid for that year's F1 race (on the same circuit)...
Oh and yes, the Stratos was Group 4, but nice footage - loved that car, even looked at getting one once...
The problem with the RS200 was Group B was killed before they got the full-spec engine, and they only ran with early lower-performance engines before then.
BTW when Michelle Mouton went to do in Pike's Peak in her Sport Quattro, Audi apparently offered her a choice of the standard 550-ish bhp or turning it up to 720-730 (I forget which), she went with the former and won. (I drove up there once when it was still dirt, with no barriers, quite exciting... not in a good way...)
Oh and watch this with the subtitles on...
