I absolutely love these tips and await the parcels to arrive with my first properly thought-through capsule wardrobe! Thank you!

    I had the perfect long leather trench in 1977 bought in Florence. The best clothes were in the past. I had long denim buttoned skirts in 1978, I bought a prefect beige wool blazer with gold buttons in 1959 with my savings before I went to University. The 1980s vogue patterns have shoulder blazers with nipped in waist. Black fine if it suits you. Not if it doesn’t

      Me too. I find black, white and grey make me look ill, whereas warmer colours look better. I'd like to see how to make warmer colours work in a classic look. I guess navy with cream is a good start, but not easy to find in the last quarter of the year as black/cooler colours seem to dominate. Sometimes I add brighter warmer colours to black to make it more wearable, but then lose the minimalist neutral/classic look I am going for.

    I had a wonderful knitted dress in 1967, i remember my country grandmother in 1945 had a wool double knit bomber jacket and straight loose pants which was a stunning outfit, she was slim, active light footed and genius, long hair in a Gibson roll around her head. She taught me as a three year old wearing that, to thread a needle. I had another superb knitted pale thick cotton knitted dress I made from two country road sweaters in 1980 as I could not find a knitted frock. Now I have a cashmere light camel polo neck knit dress. I love knits. Linen, cashmere, beautiful leather.

      I was a 'flower child' in the late 60s but remember weirdly buying a black knit midi dress in a vintage clothing shop in Chelsea. It had a high neck, padded shoulder, fitted all the way down with a kick pleat at the back. It was from a French couture boutique, and it was so chic. I had it for years. It would have been the height of fashion right now.

    • @gloglos100
      @gloglos100 Před 11 měsíci +2

      @@vivettebell1610 oh yes maybe from the 40s. It would have been wonderful. I think this latest trend refinement is so close to the better 1980s.
      Your dress would have done well in the 70s with the long line. In the1940s was a breakaway of knitted and cut to move easy clothes of excellent quality I gather from reading. The kiss lock on purses and funnel neck was invented.

    • @vivettebell1610
      @vivettebell1610 Před 11 měsíci +1

      Yes, @gloglos. Definitely 40s vibe.
      It was such a departure from my flowing floral stuff, beads and bells, and floppy Broad brimmed hats. My mother thought I had taken leave of my senses buying second-hand clothes!!! But it must have been a forerunner to my underlying and newly emerging taste for classic styling!!! Well...maybe!!

    there is a fine line, as you get older, of looking old in classics because you are not on trend at all. Someone who is 30 always looks great, literally because they are 30 but.....as you get much older it can look boring. thoughts?

      @mariareina5533 Před 11 měsíci +4

    Every time, when we approach fall, I find it tricky to pair my tops with different necklines to corresponding blazers/jackets/etc. Plain and full-coverage (turtleneck, crew, etc.) basics are easy, but v-necks, tops with smaller cutouts are a pain. Same goes for the blazers, etc. I’ve just been playing it safe for a while, but I’m sure it can be better than this 😄
    Would really love to see you cover dos and donts on matching necklines.

    Likewise I have a black velvet coat from 1980 cut in the long oversize style have been wearing it for last couple years and also soft tan leather trench coat same vintage actually fits me again having had 6 children and am now in my 60's, good style never goes out of fashion. Have always had this sense of classic style in so far as the items could be purchased. In the 80s we had beautiful local boutiques where good quality woolen and other natural fabric were available, not so many now unfortunately. There is nothing to compare with actually seeing and feeling the items you are purchasing

      @@liana2136 yes! Please who sew understand clothes differently. I have made from Linton tweeds in Carlisle UK too, they are on the net. They were the source of Chanel’s tweeds and lots of the couture clothing. We’ll definitely there are 1980s cropped jackets with exactly the side view look we see on Lydia. Looks to me like manufacturers grabbed some old patterns. There is a Montana for the amazing big puffed sleeve blouse too. Probably 1970s. I was pleased to find the 1960s cape pattern from givenchy made in green leopard knit…I bought a cape second hand made from that pattern. The designer didn’t quite get it , non knit fabric, plain wool fabric bind the sides and a tussle and it’s fantastic. Best cape design ever. I even made in 5he 60s a python skin coat short of course like our dresses after seeing marlon Brando in a python bomber jacket in the Rose Tattoo. Oh and dark green suede shirt and jacket with western fringes and a pin tucked all over shirt wonderful shirt to go with it. I pin tucked the fabric first.

Your pintucked fabric technique sounds lovely for that added texture/dimension. I'm looking at an OOP Vogue cropped jacket (8937)with raglan sleeves. Linton tweeds must be spectacular! As someone with longer hair, I often find myself sticking to a very few specific, and perhaps boring, hairstyles/jewelry rules depending on the neckline of my top, color of my outfit, and how much there is already going on.

    At the moment, I'm on the lookout for a pair of reasonably priced silver ballet flats, I'm not going to splurge as these won't be something I use a huge amount, but they will add something special to an outfit, and I'll still be wearing them in five or even 10 years time.

    Thanks for the video, Lydia! ❤ I agree on all points and guess what's in my shopping list (I almost fell out of my seat when you showed it on screen) - the Massimo Dutti low-heel knee high leather boots at p.2 in your list. 😊 The moment MD listed them on the app here in Bulgaria I knew I had to have them, so I can "unlock" all my transitional and winter dresses. ❤ I'll report back when I receive them. Hugs from me and enjoy the last days of summer! 💎🌹💎

    Very inspirational as well as informative and do hope you don't mind me adding a little tip. For those who might find a heel on a boot a tad too high for them; a shoe cobbler/maker can often reduce the height of it.. To determine by how much --- as it will depend upon the shank (rise) and pitch, place its sole/toe box on a flat solid surface with the rest of the boot overhanging then slide it forward so its heel meets the edge. Where it lines up will be the amount (noting a new cap will be added).

    Hi Lidia, I believe I have most of the type pieces you’ve identified except I do feel a little ‘sloppy’ with the larger unstructured jackets. I am happy to see that the fitted trend is emphasized as I have so many suits ! I do have low pointed leather shoes but I find I need to wear more structured shoes if I am walking a distance rather than hopping in and out of a car ! I would like a wide pair of denim however I find that I do not get to wear them much as the straight or slim ones fit better in boots when it comes to the Canadian winters! 👠❤️💄

    Hello!! I can tell from just three videos of yours that I have seen so far, Lydia, that you must live in a city. I feel like dressing appropriately for my location, and I now live in a small town a half an hour away from the city. You look great, but I don't see myself wearing blazers unless I'm going to the city. I have a black leather blazer that doesn't go with my look. I'm around cats, fish, chickens, and a dog most of the time. What do I wear?? I want to be a little trendy with with mostly classic pieces. Thank you for reading my comment. I did purchase a long shearling coat for fall and I think I know how to style it, but I want to see what influencers would do with it. I only wear t-shirts with my plaid shirts and I have almost ten of them. I live in Maine. Have the best day ever!!

    Love this video - and not just because I love all these trends and own many already! The one I struggle with the most even though I love the look is the cropped jacket (the Jackie O collarless style as you show here). Being short-waisted and wide-shouldered with a small waist and long arms means most jackets like this fit me very badly. I am hoping with the style‘s new popularity that I may find something this season though.

      I have a similar build- very short waisted and long arms. I hate bracelet length sleeves on me because it just feels like the sleeves are too short. but I found (first time ordering) a Massimo duti cropped knit sweater jacket that has great proportions. (it's navy with cream stripes and minimal shoulder epaulets). Id never heard of the brand before seeing it here but it's very nice quality and extremely affordable.

    Thank you for the video, it definitely puts the trends in nice order and the examples really add to it. There are definitely things that just happen to be on trend this A/w, but ive been wearing some of them for years. Leather? For A/W? - groundbreaking 🤭🤭 i do love incorporating leather elements into mu wardrobe, looking forward to wearing my khaki beige power blazer this season. I dont feel tempted by the cropped/short jacket trend. I personally feel those work best on women with smaller boobage area, its just how it is. I do however find cropped trench coat working for a bigger chest, so it's all good😁 ballet flats are a trend I adore on other people, but do not gravitate towards myself.

America side of the Atlantic, if you are looking for an investment piece long coat, The Checkroom out of Chicago does 100% sustainable wool coats, fully lined with quality tailoring and unique but timeliness detailing, that are suitable for actual winter conditions (i.e. -15 Celsius/5 Farenheit, colder if you layer a puffer vest underneath and wear a big scarf).

    We’re having yet another heatwave here 🥵🌴 so my autumn spirit is put on ice atm 😅😉
    What I am learning about trends, is that fashion does enjoy extremes. We had the skinny, fitted models go to wide oversized ones, and back again it seems with the blazers and cropped tops… So ladies! Keep your outdated quality clothes in storage, it’ll only be awhile before fashion mood swings sets in to guarantees the return of every item, it’ll only be a matter of how to style it properly to stay current 🤘
    That said I am so pleased to hear pointy shoes are on trend, excellent time to restock! They do add femininity and elegance to any outfit, it is my little power go to/feel good item 😘

    The thing you need to remeber about fashion shows is that half of it is haute couture and conceptual and not meant for everyday wear.
    Designers will have specific pret-a-porter (ready to wear) collections and cruise collections that are for everyday wear and don't need to be modified.

Honestly formal outwear is not really my style. I prefer more casual looks. Any ideas what I can wear without feeling like I wear a costume? • @liana2136
      @liana2136 Před 11 měsíci

      Great question. I'd go to a sewing supplier (Wawak is good) and look for shoulder pads that work for the garment. There are different styles of pads depending on the sleeve style. A fitted set in sleeve uses a different shaped pad than a dropped shoulder sleeve, where seam is below the shoulder.
