Having the high beams automatically switch to regular brightness was one of the features BMW was wanting to lock behind a subscription.
The digitalisation of cars is so idiotic. I don't want to fucking have to root/jailbreak my car. Further, sometimes "smart" features aren't particularly smart. It's pretty popular to have proximity detection on, that can detect whether or not you're about to crash into something and brake for you. I've seen it happen in the middle of a road with no abnormalities. No cars other than the car in question around. The car just slammed on the breaks. The driver looked horrified.
It happened to my boss with her old car - every time she drove on a particularly narrow road, the car would slam the breaks because it thought she was crashing/driving off the road.

The inkjet printer ink market simplified:
Inkjet printer with ink: 58 dollars
Ink cartridges: 56 dollars
thats why i switched to a laser printer, higher cost than an ink jet, but i bought this printer in 2016, still on the same toner with 30 percent remaining for all 4 toner cartridge's, unlike ink that dries up then has to be replaced, toner is already a dry powder. 1 inkjet printer i had, if i was out of cyan, the stupid printer wouldnt let me print even if it was just black (& white (the paper))
if you are willing to spend a little more a printer you can get sth like an eco tank from epson where the inc is cheaper than the paper ($10 for 4500 pages)
The print heads in inkjet printers are contained in the ink cartridge itself as they wear out and require replacing. Rather than build a printer that makes the user service apart and be more expensive they just put them in the ink cartridges as they are replaced often.
Dude you have shac as your picture fill and chill

@@MarcinKralka I had that and then it printed the black text blue.
@@MarcinKralka Every inkjet printer prints a secret, almost invisible code pattern on every page, which uses color ink. This code is meant to track you in case you print ransom letters, counterfeit money and other nefarious things at home. That's why it needs color ink for black and white pages.

Bloodshed and upperclass had always gone hand in hand
My very first programming job was while I was still in college. We had an IBM System 34 at work (the precursor to the iSeries) and it had a whopping 128K of RAM. At some point they decided to upgrade to 256K (it also could be upgraded to 512K). I was in the computer room working when the IBM rep came to do the upgrade, and I watched him. He opened a panel on the unit and changed 2 jumpers on a block of 3 jumpers and closed the panel up again, then left. The unit already had the extra memory in it! It just wasn't enabled. I tried to get my boss to let me fiddle with the jumpers to see if I could get us up to 512K , but he was afraid that I'd void the warranty. Turns out that our line printer worked the same way: 3 different models with 3 different printing speeds, each more expensive. Turns out it was the same model with a resister pack in it to slow it down.
I worked as tech in a company that sold PC upgrade parts. The then new PS/2 PC's required special IBM RAM modules but I resoldered the four bit null-ohm resistors on regular 72-pin SIMMs to make them identify as IBM modules, and we sold them way cheaper and plenty of them.

A better example of this is disabling AM/FM reception in smartphones.
Network providers convinced smartphone manufacturers years ago to stop allowing their phones to receive AM/FM signals (even though the phones are perfectly capable of it) because companies like AT&T and Verizon wanted to sell expensive internet based music streaming services instead.
Don't forget about hotspots
In some cases it's possible to unlock the am/fm with an internet radio app that also controls your hardware radio. Can't remember which app 🤷🏻♂️
I'm using an lg g5; fm is unlocked by default, battery is removable (I have 3 and a spare g5 for charging), it has a headphone jack and has an ir blaster. Also has USB-C and fast charging 👍
I swear the G5 was the last great smartphone from any manufacturer... Keep mine safe in an otter box 👍
Yes, many of the same models you have of a certain smartphone there is the exact same on other part of the world with radio built in. People say: "oh, streaming is so much better, you can choose!" But streaming services are not good if you dont know exactly what to listen to (paralysis choice is "awesome" if you are driving!) and radio is widely used to cover news if a disaster happens, because radio have a really high travel distance compared to 4G and especially 5G
The HP Ink service sends you ink cartridges before you need them so you always have them on hand. But if you decide to terminate the service, the full, unopened cartridges you have will not work. You could have a full set of cartridges you've paid for, run out of ink, and have to go to the store and pay for more ink. And there's no way (that I know of) to tell them to stop sending you new ink so you can start using store bought ink and get out of the service.
hp is such a scam
That's fucking horrible!
The service is called HP+, formerly HP instant ink, and you can cancel at any time. Newer HP+ printers allow you to use the cartridges they send you even if you cancel your subscription, so long as you had a valid subscription. They only charge you $4.99 per month for 100 prints and they send you full cartridges each time you need them, so you can't really complain when you cancel halfway during the month; you only paid 5 bucks.

I remember being surprised at how much more cost effective laser printers were after making the switch. The one I bought had a starter toner included which lasted me four years until I had to replace it and I was printing every day.
Flir did this with a bunch of their thermal cameras. They all had the exact same image sensors and screens, just the firmware was different. A bunch of owners figured this out and turned their $1,200 thermal camera into a $8,000 one!
I’ve got a minidisc Walkman that, after changing a couple bytes in its firmware, now thinks it’s a higher end model and has a bunch of extra features. That’s apparently very common in music playback equipment.

@@lefteriseleftheriades7381 300 dpi? How ancient is your printer? From the 80's and early 90's? All modern laser printers are at least 600 dpi, and many are 1200 dpi.
Inkjet printers spray liquid ink onto the paper, and if you don't use it for a long time, the ink can dry out and clog the printhead, so you need to replace the cartridge even if there's ink inside. Laser printers melt dry powder onto the paper, so you don't have the same issue.
@@rfzw ...But cost way more? Decisions decisions. 🤔
Worked on a machine during the 90's and the company had to pay for features to be unlocked. We only need one of the many features that could be unlocked, but since we wanted the most high end feature, we had to pay for all the features that where just software upgrades, at $5000 per upgrade. I think there was 5 total. Software upgrade for cash is not new, it's just everyone is now doing it.
Also happens on thermal cameras. The Flir E4 and FLir E8 have the same high resolution sensor but they software cripple the E4 to a much lower resolution. E4 costs $1000 while E8 costs $3000. Thankfully you can hack an E4 to be an E8 if you know what you're doing.
The thing about microtransaction seat warmers is ... the heating elements are still there. How hard would it really be to just rewire the heating elements to your own thermostat over a separate power lead?
Probably very easy. Hell, you could probably just install custom firmware and get all the features that way. I'm guessing it'll void the warranty but then again if you're hard/softmodding your car, you're probably technically engaged enough that most common damage that isn't covered by 3rd party insurance is probably gonna be stuff you're going to try to fix yourself.
It would break your warranty, meaning when your tesla hits a policecar, they can legally say they weren't at fault because you messed with the car.
Or make a heated seat cover and power source disconnected from any car electronics. Keep your warranty. Some newer cars have standard power outlets, like the RAV4 primes 1500watt socket in the back. Plenty of power for a seat warmer.

Time to invest in aftermarket ECU's. To be honest, you don't need to hack anything. @Waldel Martell I agree, but i'm affraid of times when we have no choice. There are less and less places where you can use old cars or get new parts for them. And we are going to a time when you can't buy it for less, and can't fix your stuff. I can hardly imagine any good reason to create 30 slightly different version of the same part for cars, sometimes just in size a few mm just to not fit in the same place or a few pins, same power output and data transfer, or simply just a firmware switch with the same components, just to avoid cross compatibility. And be able to sell the same thing same quality just with different letters for more. Not like the turned off cores in cheaper CPUs. Because than at least the housing would be the same, to be able to just put it in cheaper cars where the function is is not needed, but it is not compatible, and if it is once got put together can't change anything. And why hiding everything away even if it making the manufacturing process more complicated, just to not be able to change it your self. How is it going to be cheaper for anyone? If they would really wanted to make it cheaper they would make everything compatible and easy access and repair. Instead we throw away anythind slightly faulty. And do we need to create this many cars, when we don't know the demand, and if they can't sell just let it rotting away in huge yards before it get crushed. They yust figured out that people can't track their micro transactions ant they can benefit more even if they are selling everything with every car. When you pay for something because a road trip or weather condition, because it is "just" x much and jour trip takes longer or the weather stays bad and you have to pay "just" one more time. Compare it to when you buy the car with that function and you can use it any time (for example AC or heated window). Not mentioning the change of therms of conditions, system errors, prica changes. And if it brakes you have to go to the dealer and pay full price for service and replacement. If you try to repair it they shut down your car that you payed for because it is unsafe for you to plug in a one way connector. It is already happening, just look at Tesla (i also lowe the idea of it, but not the buisness policy, not like i ever going to have any problem with them, i never going to have enough money for anything they sell :-D but if others are following it...). And if you went to service, than now you can pay to use a part, that you already purchased twice, and who knows how many times during it's life span. Sorry unfortunetelly i can't see how it is going to be cheaper :-)
Regarding the chip difference example i think "you missed a spot". As manufacturers have a high probability of success otherwise it would not really be feasible, some parts are intentionally shut down even if the chips are in perfectly working condition in order to artificially create different product tiers. Pretty much as how games are launched nowadays with the 60$ for the base game but can go over 100$ for the gold edition or whatever that has other content available to the player, but it's not something that it wasn't already build in.

The title of this video got me so excited... I was not disappointed
Some Canon printers had the "feature" that they would only print a certain number of pages and then just stop working completely. Others would tell you that the ink residue pad was full and it could no longer print. These "features" seem to have gone but I'm waiting to see what the next "feature" will be.
It's all in ink tank models from all major brands. Including currently lesser eveil epson & brother.
What next, people wait for scene groups to crack Denuvo on their car's seat heating?

Me: Can I please print this black and white document, please, the paper is due tomorrow!
Inkjet printer: Haha Nope! I need more CYAN!
Y'all should do a video on soldering things. But maybe not in an attempt to unlock extra cores.
The printer ink problem exists in the pharmaceutical industry too with blood glucose monitors. The device is cheap the strips are crazy
thats why i switched to a laser printer, higher cost than an ink jet, but i bought this printer in 2016, still on the same toner with 30 percent remaining for all 4 toner cartridge's, unlike ink that dries up then has to be replaced, toner is already a dry powder. 1 inkjet printer i had, if i was out of cyan, the stupid printer wouldnt let me print even if it was just black (& white (the paper))
It's not a problem in the way that you think it is. Or the way that this video portrays it and correctly. Inkjet printers have print heads that wear out and need to be replaced. Rather than build a printer that's expensive and requires the user to service a part they build the print heads into the inkjet cartridges themselves which get replaced often. This way they can build cheaper print heads that don't last very long and need replacing as often as the cartridge would.
In England they give the devices to doctors to hand out for free and then the doctors prescribe the expensive strips.
@@Verdigo76 "Rather than build a printer that's expensive and requires the user to service a part"
You say as the user services THAT SAME PART MORE OFTEN BUT IS TIED TO THEIR INK meaning not only do they have 2 potential ways for it to break/run out early wasting consumer's money but also wasting company time and money.
It is an absolute problem.
car jailbreaking is gonna blow up if cars become real-life DLC
One of the most common ones I've seen... Fm radio in phones, but no fm app. Some apps can make the built in radio work, but not always
4:12 Drop never ceases to disappoint. They had to have a thick, unbending USB cable protrude from the edge? They couldn't have built a channel into the underside? Even cheap OEM keyboards include routing channels. I'd rather have that than a detachable cord at any cost.
01:40 A Crysis of Conscience you say? 🤔
Last month I bought a refillable printer (an epson ecotank) and so far I'm really happy about it, feels like freedom when you don't have to worry too much about the price of ink. I'm using the printer much more than I would before.
sometimes the disabled cores are cut from power delivery so you just cant turn them on. now if you could it would be neat to turn them on and just cut the clock speed by core or disable turbo/boost by core for stability.
Some iPhones have an FM radio. Can’t use it tho!
Which iPhones ?
I'm going to guess it was the ones without headphone jacks.
@@bilateralrope8643 nah it was the old ones
It's like with the Switch, ya buy the console, ya pay for the internet but still have to pay for a subscription to play online.
if bmw does paying for heaters and it works out and all the car companys start doing it older cars will become a luxtory because you would only had to pay for gasoline and maintence
You mean like every other console?
I mean, nintendo are the cheapest, and the company that waited the longest to publish this feature though...
@@korotoawo
LOL right? Funny of them to point out the Switch only.
You're not paying console makers to access "the internet" you're paying them to access the servers that host the games, servers that cost money to run.
It's like complaining you have to pay a monthly fee to access the internet because you brought a gateway so why can't you just use it... They have costs too.
Video suggestion? Maybe a video about all the microphone settings like de-esser, compressor, limiter, expander, gate, pass filter etc.. those are pretty confusing
I really liked the videos about all the graphics settings :)
What about Hyper Threading? Is it disabled at a hardware level as well?
I knew the micro-transactions would happen eventually with cars. With how much they control electronically they could force you to pay extra for just about anything.
The chip thing reminds me of the old 5.25 floppy disks. They would test both sides of the disk. If both passed then they sold them as double sided for more money. Ones that didn't were single sided. We used to take a hold puncher and put a notch in the right spot so the computer could use both sides. I can honestly say not once did a self made double sided disk ever fail me.
The same was done with 386 and 486 dx/so chips. If you was lucky you could set up a sx as a dx
2:52 Imagine having to jailbreak your car's OS just to get heated seats.
Like the Dell computer you get when you order a warranty from them?
Man: Buy this printer. Trust me, I look like Trudeau.
Me: All the more reason to distrust you.
that's the joke, my dude.
I love the fact that these videos are short. Everything is clear and explained properly. Don't have to watch for 10 minutes
In the case of Tesla, it was to get around the problem of eligibility for EV credit. Model 3 SR was over the price of eligibility so they came out with a software limited range to sell the car at cheaper price (to make it eligible for credit) and then sell the normal range as an after sale upgrade.
I say this every time, but I'll say it again: Riley is a precious gem and an incredible addition to LMG.

That’s what jailbreaking is for. You can get the features you want on your consoles and handhelds whether the manufacturer wants you to have them or not.
Awesome presentation, great info.
Except that it contains wrong information. Print heads are the most expensive part of printer except that they are not in the printer at all. Print heads wear out and need to be replaced often. Rather than build a printer that requires a user to service a part and be more expensive they put the print heads in the inkjet cartridge itself so that it gets replaced along with the ink and is a much easier process. The rest of the parts in a printer are inexpensive so if they break you can just get another printer and the manufacturer doesn't have to sell replacement parts. If you don't like this arrangement then you can always shell out the $$$ for a laser printer and experience what it's like the other way
@@Verdigo76 printer = 34 USD

Yes, clearly 34>56
I have noticed this in laptop batteries. They have put condition in their controller board IC that it stops charging the battery after certain amount of battery health. Even though the lithium ion cells in your battery can still be charged and give you more than 1 hour backup.
It just gives you the error "Connected But Not Charging".
Maybe that's there to improve battery health
@@sobhaks7231 what I will do with a healthy battery that stops charging to reserve it's health?
It’s designed to keep battery healthy on laptops that are always connected to power. It should help on the long run.
On my 2 Lenovo laptops I have the option to activate that mode or not.
@@guillaumecourtens9594 No, you didn't got my point. The thing you are talking about is called max charging limit. I have set my laptop to 88 percent. It stops charging at 88%.
But I was trying to say that when your battery's health is poor it stops charging at all. Even though it can still be used for some extra months but you have to buy a new battery quickly when your old battery do not charge at all.
Companies often dispute “but I paid full price for the hardware, why do I have to pay for the feature?”; they claim that in those cases you paid for around 30-50% of the hardware related to the feature. And paid subscription or extra payments are there to cover the difference plus cover those who don’t buy it. (tldr, you have not paid for the hardware, but when you do, you pay more)
When he said “speaking of taming wild beasts” I expected a manscaped ad.
So true.

What blows my mind is that part of the point in streamlining the manufacturing process is to reduce costs which can be passed to consumers. Until it's too efficient. Damage it a little.
Seriously, what happened to just buying stuff and owning it forever?
Inflation happened. And it happened for too long!
Or you know, just buy a new printer for half the price of the ink refill and it comes with ink too, responsibly recycle your old printer and bam, you saved a buck
Because most new printers only come with "starter" ink cartridges... i.e only half full!!
Why not buy a laser or led focused printer instead? Instead of having to recycle the printer and the ink cartidgre every time, you just need to buy the powdered ink. Yeah it's more expensive short term, but in the long run you'll be saving both money and the environment.
or everyone dont responsibly recycle then governments legislate on the company's bad practices as printers start filling landfills
Get a Epson refillable tank
This goes way back.
This was (is?) IBMs operating model for some enterprise systems. IBM used to have a "computing on demand" offering. IBM would lease a system to a company, and the company would receive a fully loaded version of that model. Only the resources agreed to in the in the lease were active. If the company needed additional CPU/Memory/Disk, temporarily or permanently, they called up IBM, paid the money, and IBM would remotely enable the entitled resources. Or the lease may include predetermined times of increased resources, such as in retail which requires increased transaction processing capability during the holidays. Eventually someone had the bright idea that those unused resources could be used by other customers. So now we have "the Cloud" which is the same leasing concept, but instead of sending the computer to physically reside in a single company's building sitting there with unused resources, IBM (or Microsoft or Amazon or whoever) keeps the computers in their own data center and leases that one computer to multiple clients keeping all the resources busy.
There was also the Athlon/Duron pencil trick, but I do not remember if that was due to crippling of the CPU or if that was an intentional "feature" for over clockers.
There were also stories of the 486SX vs. DX, but not going to repeat because I'm not sure if they were ever proven/verified.
2:30 I was talking to the technical support person about the low toner warning on the laser jets we have in our office. While we keep extra cartridges on hand, the support person told me that when the low toner warning comes on, we really have about 20% remaining.
