I HAD to build a Les Paul style guitar after the Electric Shelf 335 ! (Guitar Making ASMR)

- It took me more than one year to finish this build, not so much because the build was complicated, but life is...
A little bit of context: this was supposed to be the material for a tutorial on how to make guitars at home for the beginner woodworker. But then I broke my wrist, and ended up making a Telecaster for that tutorial , using only one hand (most underrated video on CZcams by the way).
In March 2021 I began this build and didn't want to use the original Les Paul shape, so I redesigned the plans to my tastes. And then Crimson contacted me for the GGBO, so I did the One Piece Build which took me a few months, and then I made the Blue One for another partnership, that also took me a few months, and then life happened, and procrastination hit hard.
I immediately had mixed feelings about this build because I intended the one-piece top to be symmetrical, but the carving exposed some sapwood here and there, and I do have very bad OCD's ... Long story short, when all the pieces came together I just fell in love with the whole thing again, it sounds gorgeous to my ears and plays heavenly, I think it's my go-to guitar now ... (until I build the next one I guess). Also, I wanted this guitar to be an ode to wood, so I hope it shows!
Some specs:
- One piece top, unknown wood
- Two piece body, sapele
- 5 plys neck, cherry, padouk (from my neighboor's decking), mahogany
- Ebony fretboard (Madinter's Crelicam)
- Maple bindings
- Eucalyptus pickguard and truss rod cover
- 50 year old maple for the backplate cover
- Grover 502CK locking tuners, Schaller GTM bridge and tailpiece
- All Switchcraft electronics, modern wiring, 47nF caps
- Seymour Duncan Phat Cat P90
- 22 frets, Dunlop 6140
All the wood comes from Lochten et Germeau (BE) and Madinter (ES).
For the demos I only used 3 pedals:
- Paul Cochrane Timmy clone, on veroboard
- Klon centaur clone, on veroboard
- Marshall Guv'nor clone, on veroboard
Everything was recorded directly into Logic using a 2notes Torpedo Captor through my Egnater Tweaker head 15w)
Everything was filmed with a Canon EOS RP and a couple of lenses (Sigma 18-35 F1.8 and Canon 85mm F2 macro)
---------
And hey, thanks for 100K subs, it happened last week, so I'll begin my Red Special build right now, it shouldn't take too long, I'm very very emotional about that build!
Bisous !

did you check my last video where I make a guitar using *Ikea furniture* as a source of wood ? go watch it now ! czcams.com/video/zkj93O-x9VA/video.html
If you still have it, couuld you be so kind and drop the tune?
Cool@

What causes guitars that have that deep well I'm not for sure the right words if it's dwell or what it is but it was on a I believe I played a Chad Atkins model gretsch and it was just a sound that I've never been able to replicate, I have not a very good guitar player I just played for myself I was using I think it was a fender super twin amp, that was way back in the seventies maybe I would love to recreate that sound one more time while I'm still able to play, excellent job that you are doing I'm glad I found your videos,
I will never again complain on the price of a custom guitar again. Fantastic job.
if it's LP copy it's not custom guitar....
@@jutublizard So it is only valid when the custom guitar is made by the brand whose model it is??
I worked at a custom shop for years and let me say there is a LOT of CNC work out there now for consistency purposes. So I would still complain a little because this process in the video I feel like is the traditional custom build where most places that we would all recognize the name of do not do it like this anymore.
@@jutublizard incorrect
@@jutublizard you are clueless...most custom guitars are inspired by famous models from let's say Gibson and Fender, and does not make it less valuable.
When your daughter becomes a master luthier in the future, I'll be sure to buy one of her guitars! You, sir, are both a great builder and a great father.
Naaaa, I'll buy all of her builds first :p
@@tchiksguitars hahaha! Spoken like a fellow dad! Wouldn’t be great if she went on to become a world class violin maker! Violins to rival Stradivari! The time and patience that you appear to put into your guitars only refined with the patience of a woman. I measure the patience of a woman by the unwavering patience of my wife who has the patience of a saint!! She deals with our four children and my child like behavior😂😂. You build absolutely beautiful guitars!! Thanks for sharing!!
@@tchiksguitarsNow YOU HAVE TO BUILD AN SG
@@timothycormier3494 she's not particularly patient (well she's 5 so she has that as an excuse), but she'll get there, I wasn't patient either before guitar making. I remember my first builds : couldn't wait for the finish to cure before putting the strings on and play it.
@@tchiksguitars I believe it.
I can’t believe you made something so beautiful in only 25 minutes!
I immediately looked for some reply of someone trying to correct you hahaha.

I realized that one thing I especially love about your videos aren't necessarily the guitars (although they're beautiful each and every time) - but how calm and relaxing the cinematography is. Your workshop really comes across like a place to be calm, to take your time, to lose yourself in your work and to be creative - really just for the sake of creativity. So nice.
You are too kind. My videos are a lot of things, because I think I'm relatable somehow, just a random dude in his random garage doing random stuff
This is so wholesome in every way. The light, the pace, the happy kid, the gorgeous guitar. You're anything but some random dude. Outstanding work, outstanding life.
But...i really didn't care much for the clean sound of those pups! Lol! Congrats on another great build!
Сколько стоит у вас заказать гитару?
And people wonder why good guitars aren't cheap. They're a labor of love, passion and devotion. Great work!
I love the moments with your daughter. They remind me of how interested mine is in the things I do. Actually just two days ago I gifted her an Alvarez acoustic because she wants to play an instrument to accompany her singing. Beautiful work.
That’s the same acoustic I have
Playing the guitar at the end was a real amazing surprise, not only you have created an amazing instrument that looks like a piece of art
Thanks !
I think you have to be a true fan of music and guitars to do this for that amount of time. It's a sin not to be able to play!
The way you craft it with love in every touch and even with your child around feels warm and gentle. Even a non-craftmen or non-guitar player can understand how valuable your build is.
After watching the full video I felt nothing but pure admiration for love and dedication you have for your family and music!
You, sir, are my favorite guitar builder!
And you're my favorite member of the notification squad
I second that! My favorite builder as well! Awesome craftsmanship! Love that you get your kiddo involved. Keep up the excellent work my friend!
@@tchiksguitars Слушайте,а вы никогда не думали открыть свой собственный бренд гитар? Я бы прикупил у вас пару штук,а ещё было бы прекрасно если бы выпустили учебник "как сделать гитару самому, инструкция для чайников")
@@tchiksguitars Can you make me a custom wood floor guitar and how much will it cost?
@@user-vh5so1bq8e thx. I've done that (the tutorial) and no I won't sell anything ever, it's just a hobby :)
I was already loving the beautiful craftsmanship, and the thoughtful & elegant camerawork that was on display, but then the sheer wholesome of the bits with your daughter put this over the edge for me, and made me think that if someone asked me to show them an example of the best humanity can offer, this could be on the list. It was the humor in the "do you want to help me shape the neck" bit that made me *need* to comment. I realise this sounds incredibly hyperbolic, and it's not like this video is about a cure for cancer or something, but I feel like creativity, skill, humor, and kindness is the stuff of life, and this has me feeling all the feels. Rock on mate.
Your description gave me a warm fuzzy feeling.

Cherry on top: I built that guitar with one hand, so you can probably do it with two :)
Totally failed proof method for people with little to no experience in woodworking.
Guaranteed results.
Can also cure hair loss, increase your chance at gambling and bring back the loved one.
Elvis tried it, loved it.

@@chapichale1074 thx ! I do not sell my guitars no :) or anything for that matter

What is a "failed proof method" failed suggests it didn't work, so no good to anyone
I'm not usually a Les Paul fan, but I'm OBSESSED with this. This has to be one of my favourite builds of yours - aside from the ES-335. These just keep getting better and better, keep up the good work!
Thank you ! Not a Les Paul fan myself :)
I have been looking forward to this video for a while, and what a great guitar. I love your attention to detail in all that you do. An absolute pleasure to watch.

It’s very nice to see the shop being shared with the little on! The giggle of a little one could change the world! Very relaxing to watch this video
Not everyone can play guitar very well. Not everyone can build a guitar well.
But to build a guitar with a sound that will make people passionately want to own it, and to play guitar like you do!
I am in awe, sir. Amazing.
People should be wearing your face on their T-shirts!
You undersell yourself. I've never played a Les Paul (and I've played many) that I thought was terribly well made. This, seems exquisite. I'm a builder/luthier myself and really love how you approach the craft. Gorgeous guitar

I LOVE that you got your daughter involved! That’s fantastic! And yeah, great job on the guitar. You have skills, my friend.
Dude, I've been watching your builds from the beginning of your youtube channel. "Mesmerizing"! It makes building a guitar from scratch look so easy. It is definitely NOT easy and you do it with such grace. Including your daughter in your progress is very magical because it shows the outside interference of doing a project like this and how you handle it with utter enjoyment while sharing it with her. I always look forward to your work. Keep it up!!!
Thanks for those kind words !!
One of the best LP builds I've seen.
You Sir have put some great thoughts into my head for my next build.
Everything about this video shows how much time and dedication you put into everything, not just the guitar building but the video production as well. One of the best videos I have seen to date, the pure quality of the build, smooth camera transitions (first time the subscribe block was shown was flawless), humorous/wholesome moments with your daughter, all just work so perfectly together and shows your own style of making videos. Of course I wish they were more often but you cannot rush life and quality ;D
I look forward to the next build!
Thank you for those kind words :)
I subscribe this comment completely.
I'm so glad I found this channel, it's awesome. I've had my heart set on making guitars for a while, and while I love coming up with designs and wiring schemes, I've always seen the woodworking aspect as just something that has to be done, not something I really look forward to; but your channel has definitely changed that. Your videos have been a tremendous help for letting me know where to even start with tools (with so many options and different approaches to building can get overwhelming very easily) and it's also been very motivating. I'm very hopeful that I'll be able to start building instruments this summer, and you've helped me to overcome a lot of my toughest obstacles so far.
Also, I want to share a small tip that I learned from a luthier I had the opportunity to make a guitar with once: He taught me that when you're making the neck of the guitar wait until you've attached the neck and bridge, adjust the truss rod as needed, and _then_ install the frets; this way you shouldn't need to do much, if any, touch up work on the frets for the final set-up (I've only tried this once, but he has many decades of experience and used to work at Martin, so I trust him). I'm not sure if you could still use a fret press, he only hammers his in, but it seems like it saves a lot of time in the long run and I've never seen anyone else do it.
Amazing work! So sweet that your daughter helps you with everything. Sounds beautiful!!! I want one now!
Just wanted to say I appreciate you, I'm nearly finished with my telecaster build, and its been an incredibly rewarding prokect to work on!
Congrats !!
I first read telecaster build as testicular build. Oh how i laughed.
Wow makes me stand back and blows my mind on the craftsmanship and having to remember all the steps involved truly an art bless you
That this is BEAUTIFUL. Amazing work. The fact that it sounds as good as it does isn't surprising. You nailed this build.
putting the adhesive tape to the binding alternately up and down shows how much attention you put into your work. Well done.
P.S. your daughter is number one and you are a great dad! you are building guitars and above all memories !!!
@cranmerguitar taught me that :)

The most beautiful of all is that you passed on to your daughter the love of building a guitar, she will be a great master like her dad, great job
Hopefully :) I'd be happy if she finds anything she's passionate about.

I could watch you build guitars all day, it's just so fascinating and relaxing at the same time. Although I don't have money to buy an electric guitar I deeply respect and appreciate the craftsmanship.
11:02 your daughter has that work-from-home mentality 😂
Ahahaha true !
Pants are overrated anyway!
I can tell you really like wood when I see your final productions. Very little finish on the guitars, just the bare wood plus some oiling to protect them. It gives them a very nice look, one that you don't see often in music stores. Awesome work 👍
thanks!
Always a pleasure to watch these amazing builds. My wife, kids and I have been following your videos for a couple of years now.

i would much rather pay 1500 dollars for a guitar built with this much love and care than whatever tf Gibson has been releasing nowadays.
This cost probably way more than $1500. If it was that cheap I would have bought one myself. Custom built guitars are very expensive but well worth the price

I took just a shade over 17years to finish mine, but mine was a carved top single piece mahogany body, loaded with 3 custom wound humbucking P90s and a peizo bridge... Each HP90 has its own set of controls, each coil of each pickup wired independently together, with nearly all cancellations wired out.. I finished it, nearly 10years ago, and im still finding new pup combinations... It just keeps on giving..

brilliant work man, I really enjoyed learning from your process. looks like building the body isn't difficult, building the neck looks crazy. great job again man
Building the body is 100x harder than building the neck :D (carved body top, angled mortise, wooden bindings). Where's the neck is just any neck haha
