#Yuzu #odin2 #emulation - Hry
There's a new update out now with Native Code Execution (NCE). This is huge news for switch emulation as the CPU now runs the game entirely natively. Only the GPU remains emulated which means a lot of games will have a huge performance bump!
The new update for what, which emulator are we talking about?
@@dri_him yuzu, it's a seting you can toggle in the CPU options. Skyline's not getting any updates lol
@@glazedbelmont noob here. Do you think retroid pocket 4 can run switch games?
@@squirtle4519 basic ones, yes but you won't be playing breath of the wild or Mario kart 8 on it
@@glazedbelmont thank you for your reply!
Exactly the kind of information we needed, thank you for uploading this so quickly!
Another great video, Russ! I appreciate you showing the RAM utilization to determine what might be playable on the base. It’s good to know some games will run on it!
love your videos man keep it up! So happy when I get to see new uploads every kind!
Thank you Russ! This video answers my question from the first impressions video 😁 What i see here is a nice list of fully playable switch games and it's probably the challenge Ayn wants to win.
I don't know how much yuzu emulator can push emulation further, if zelda games will be more smooth and how many playable games will be added. It's already a win.
The fun part is that emulation below switch on this device will be smooth and the game list available to play is endless.
Super excited for your full review Russ, love how thorough you are JUST looking at switch emulation 💯
I think it's still pretty early to do a proper Switch emulation on Android test video presently at the moment since the Android port of Yuzu is pretty much in its alpha stages, while the upcoming Strato emulator seems nowhere else close to being released. But nonetheless it's still nice to finally see a fairly large YT channel try to cover this topic.
A snapshot in time of where the emulation is currently at in October 2023 is always useful, especially when looking to buy a product in October of 2023 lol
Thought Strato was coming next Thursday
I play almost all games on yuzu... very very few have pbs...
So no, its not that early.
It's funny you say that because some people have already finished BOTW on yuzu with NCE+turnip drivers on odin 2,progress is incredible.
Given that Nintendo is suing Yuzu and it seriously might disappear, we might not have much longer to wait.
Thanks again Russ! Waking up and seeing an RGC video in my notifications makes me so happy, I enjoy it with my coffee routine 😅
Looking forward to seeing the Odin 2 PS2 video, please test Ratchet Deadlocked/Gladiator🥺
I won't be using my Odin 2 to play Switch games, but the fact it can at all is a great sign of just how far dedicated 'retro' handheld devices have come in the last few years.
Well, this is running the flagship processor (QC 8g2) with custom drivers, an overclock and cooking. Which means it will stay relevant and competitive for a decent time. AYN can just focus on the small things, and to just keep making these and shipping them out.
But the testament to why such an affordable "retro" handheld CAN emulate a current selling console has several factors. First is the one stated above (QC 8g2), secondly it's because both handheld/console are running very similar software-hardware so not much differences, third it's because the emulation developers are that talented, and most importantly fifth point is because the NSwitch is overpriced and underpowered.
Just for context, the NSwitch has performance closer to the 2005 Xbox than the 2014 XB1. It was released trying to compete against the PS4 Pro. And it is currently trying to compete in stores against the 2020 XSX. So yeah, from a Docked or Home Console perspective it is woefully underpowered. But if you look at the handheld performance, and judge where it should be, it's actually not bad. For context just picture the GBA vs Dreamcast, NDS vs PS2, PSP vs GameCube, 3DS vs Wii, PS Vita vs Xbox 360, and NSwitch vs PS4 Pro.
edit: spelling
@@ekinteko Power of the original console does not matter much though when talking about computer configurations and trying to emulate those by software. The fact that Ayn Odin 2 follows the computer architecture of an Ayn Odin which was better suited physically for PlayStation emulation is incredibly impressive (though with mods) that you don't get close to maxing this thing out emulating a system that is purely software.
@@12stormy13why would it not matter? The faster console will need a faster pc/phone to emulate.
@@ekintekowhat oc? How much?
Yuzu still doesnt have nce like skyline does, so the hardware being similar doesnt matter, its just the 8g2 happens to be strong enough.
@@bulletpunch9317 The AYN Odin2 is about +10% faster than the Samsung S23 Ultra, and it can sustain that performance indefinitely. The Samsung seems to start throttling after 10 minutes.
The NSwitch is ARM-based and so is the AYN Odin2. If the NSwitch was built on x86, it would be much harder to emulate on the AYN Odin2. So it's much less about software-emulation and moreso about language-translation. They're also somewhat close in software (Android vs Custom Unix), which allows this translation to work in the first place.
Just think about the difference in performance between the GameCube and the QSD 835. It's a huge difference maybe x16 or more, and that's with the highly optimised Dolphin Emulator. Now compare the QC 8g2 to the NSwitch hardware and it's a difference closer to x8 or less. And that's with an emulator (Skyline/Strato/Yuzu) which is fairly immature or new. Not sure if you get my point with that.
Similar case with the PS Vita and the Vita3k Emulator. Yet we still don't have the original Xbox emulator on Android. Our Windows 98 is okay, but the Windows Xp emulation on AndroidOS is pretty clunky. Whilst emulating Windows7 is basically impossible, as is the likes of Xbox 360, PS3, and WiiU. All of these platforms are arguably slower than the NSwitch.
We can't expect XB1 or PS4 emulation on ARM, maybe on macOS running M1/M2/M3 with Max/Ultra variant. That's a more Desktop System with dedicated hardware co-processors. But not on any Apple A-Bionic or Qualcomm Snapdragon or MediaTek Dimensity chipsets. It's just too taxing having to do software-emulation of x86 into ARM architecture. Just look at the current state of Windows 11S, software-emulation isn't going too well for Microsoft and they've had a decade into it.
I really want to see Steam come up with some way to leverage these types of handhelds other than steam link, whether it be an android app or something that works well in ARM linux builds. I feel like this could really open up the industry and make these handhelds even more popular.
Extending Proton support to ARM hardware would transform the market completely, Apple's Rosetta has show it is possible.
@elektromagnetik2786 Yes, good point. That actually might be the catalyst. Maybe Valve will partner with Apple for a 5" iPad with controls built-in 😅 seems strange to think about but you never know how these things will go.

Great video as always. Your intro to appease Nintendo made me chuckle!
The thing I love about Switch emulation, especially with handhelds that can support it, is the fact you can play in docked mode.
I was always curious about that: Aren’t HUD elements in some games smaller in docked mode?
@@LordRaydenTube you know, I never even thought of that, however that's actually a valid question, but no, in my experience, I haven't had issues with Switch games running in docked mode, on handhelds (Android phones, Android handheld & Windows handheld consoles) & texts/HUDs coming out smaller.
@@LordRaydenTubefrom my experience some switch games do have the HUD get smaller in docked. But it's nothing drastic

If anyone is wondering why totk crashes the ram monitor. I've actually done some testing with the game, currently on Yuzu it will just eat any amount of RAM that you throw at it. However full speed floats around 8-10gb from what I can tell. But if your device has 20, 30, or even 40gb of ram it will devour all of it and shutdown all background activity even your home screen whi h is typically exempt.

Fantastic video as always. ARM processors have come such a long way and they're great for portable devices like this one. I hope we start seeing more support for emulators on android, or even a linux distro that can run on this hardware. It would unlock a lot of capabilitirs for devices like this.
Emudeck is on its way to Android... 😁
Made my preorder after your impressions video. Excited hope it delivers on time….. for the first time…💀
This honestly makes me wish we had a WiiU emulator of android. I feel a well optimized WiiU emulator would be VERY easy for SD8 gen1 & gen2 CPUs. Perhaps Yuzu will just get optimized enough for us to just rely on switch ports.
All that being said, I am excited for PC emulation on high end Android especially for simpler titles like Indy or older native PC titles.
YT has videos showing the sd8gen2 working with Winlator, and it looks *very* promising, to say the least. Maybe not so much for the Odin2 base model, but Pro and Max should do very well.
Finally, we can play Switch games on the go :P
this is an amazing analysis, thank you!!
Honestly if I wanted to play Switch games its recent enough that I'll just use my Switch, but I am thoroughly impressed with the device's performance! Biggest I'll go is to the Gamecube/PS2, but it makes me giddy to think that I have all this extra headroom meaning that it'll probably handle anything I throw at it with relative ease (shader compilation slowdowns notwithstanding). Definitely going to get me one of these when I can spare the $500+AUD

Great video Russ, much needed for all enthusiasts! Have you already checked the possibility of using part of storage space as extra RAM in Odin 2, to make harder games run smoother maybe? It'll ve worthy for most of us getting an Odin 2 soon to see this extension in action.
Appreciated the clarity at the top of the video. You may have covered your perspective on Switch emulation in the past, but I'm relatively new to the channel and found it reassuring to hear that you're supporting hard-working devs.
I got an retroid pocket 3 plus and this was my first emulation handheld. I am really looking forward to the GC and PS2 tests. And I really want to buy this device 😅
Between emulation and streaming (Moonlight, GamePass, GFN) and I have high hopes to get the Odin 2 to act as an "all in one" device. I've got a Switch, but am really psyched to be able to play a decent selection of Switch games on the Odin to be able to travel with a single device.

Honestly i got the 8gb ram spec and i think for the catalog i play that will be more than enough.... i expected the ram usage to get close to 8gb in some games and that's ok i have a Nintendo switch if i want to play those games natively... more happy with this purchase after watching this. Great video russ as always!

Great video and exciting to see switch emulation improve with such hardware. You noted that you were unable to get Yuzu to work with an external controller. Did you try using the Odin software to disable the built in controls?
Hey Russ, you are a lifesaver as always. Great in depth content, i really appreciate it. On some android phones, there is an option that you can select a portion of the internal storage to act as an additional ram. I wonder if this option is present in Odin 2, and if so, would it be beneficial to incerase the Switch performance of the base model that has 8 gb of ram. I am on the fence of ordering between the base and the pro, and the 75$ difference is a meaningful amount of money for my budget. 😅
Dude, I HIGHLY recommend using the Turnip graphics driver with the Yuzu Android emulator. If I could run Sea of Stars and Persona 5 Royal on an 8GB SD 865 with next to no rendering problems then I'm sure running them on an 12 GB 8 Gen 2 should not be a problem. I had the exact same graphics issues you went through when trying to run Sea of Stars without it.
Ah i thought he tried all these drivers, i know taki would
Russ said he was using Turnip drivers at the beginning of the video. The problem is most likely the 8 Gen 2, apparently Turnip drivers aren't as mature for the Gen 2.
@@aru3 Oh, I must've missed that. Well, I guess that really shows what good drivers for the appropriate systems can really contribute in terms of performance.
I'm personally really confident that this thing is capable of running TotK at full speed, and I cannot _wait_ for Strato to come out.

Russ, will you be posting an Odin 2 guide to your website soon? Or updating the original to include the 2? I’d love to have my memory card ready for when it arrives.
Excellent review as usual Russ. can you do Vita emulation testing on Odin 2 as well? thanks
First off, great list of switch games, I have around 40+ physical games and even more on digital. I already own ayn odin 1 pro so the only advantage I see to getting these models is better switch emulation and possibly better gamecube, wii and ps2 emulation. I also have my steam deck as well as a PC should I ever wanna use Yuzu, though in the case of the steam deck it’s not quite as travel friendly as any Odin handheld. I do have plans to switching to an Android phone in the future, probably to a Redmagic 8s pro since those have the same chipset and memory as the highest end Odin 2 model. Either way, awesome video as I always enjoy seeing switch games running on other devices
I just bought an Odin Pro because I thought it would do GameCube and PS2 flawlessly. Was I wrong?
@@81684hnxv I don’t think so as some ps2 and gamecube you may have to lower the resolution but aside from that most if not all of them should run great. To answer your question, it’s a ps2/gamecube friendly device but not a flawless one as far as I know
@@81684hnxvYou mean the original Odin ?
It's funny how fast emulation progress is,just 3 months ago botw was not playable at sub 20FPS @ 720P/Handheld mode but now few people have already finished botw on odin 2 using NCE+Turnip drivers pretty much making the game playable at 720P locked 30FPS with very few crashes here and there.
With 5 minutes of setting up,one can completely paly through zelda botw without any issues on powerful chips like snapdragon 8 gen 2 or 8 gen 1+
Ofcourse using custom drivers also crashes some games but overall compatibility has improved a lot,in a year 90% of the switch games will be playable without using any custom drivers.
I really like the look and performance of that.
I would really like to see (if possible) an updated Yuzu guide for the Steam Deck, that include some details of "that" game... :)

Maybe in some years the odin 2 switch performance will get better due to emulators improvements
That’s very likely
Thanks for this dedicated switch video! I was considering the 8GB Odin 2 for GC, PS2, PSP, and Wii but when I saw that Switch was an option, I started to consider the other models. From these benchmarks, it looks like the 8GB should be enough (with some Z exceptions), other than those you mentioned, am I wrong in thinking that the 8GB version should be enough?

I love that disclaimer for the Nintendo emulation because you're right it's a touchy subject but it is a compliment to have other modern devices to upscale it. Enjoying our favorite games in an easier way but still aiding the developers etc. I wish Nintendo cared to preserve it's rich history of games and memories but they don't do that.
would it make any sense at all to snag a odin lite right now for a strictly emulation device or should wait for the odin 2 to start shipping to buy that instead?
Ram utilization is always tricky to measure because processors like to use more ram that necessary. Meaning that 50% usage on the pro might not necessarily mean 6 gb of ram used on the base version. You can see this with how most games will use 30-40% ram even if they are lighter and probably only need a fraction of that. I wouldn’t expect that to mean there is hope to run a game like TOTK on the base version. But it’s something to consider especially for those games that are around 7 gb on the pro version.
I'm worried about the difficulty with controller support when connected to a TV. Is that just with Yuzu? Are the other systems smooth in recognising one or multiple controllers?
That's what I was worried about too

Unless things have changed with Vita 3K, then the newest good MLB game we can emulate on Android is Sony's "MLB 11: The Show" for PS2 and PSP. Those rosters are well over a decade old. I don't own a Switch; but, I'm liking the idea of picking up a physical copy of last year's "The Show" for cheap (because I'm not a Pirate from Pittsburgh... Go Reds) and running it on the Odin 2. Obviously having that little extra wiggle room is nice, but I can't see a practical reason other than possible future proofing if they come out with other system emulation down line (PS3, XBOX/ 360). So Handheld mode is 720p 30 FPS and docked 1080p 60FPS right? Can't you turn the resolution down to 720p in docked mode to maintain the 60 FPS ?
Agreed on the question of Switch emulation-my original model Switch (hacked) is still alive and kicking, but sometimes I want the bigger screen of my Steam Deck or 4K upscaling on my gaming rig. And as you mention, I feel it’s a necessity to rip all of my games (online especially) given the potential ephemeral nature of their availability.
Iirc resolution wise, the Switch and Steam Deck are both 720p

@@regis_c not to mention the SD screen looks like crap without even comparing it with a Switch screen
@@regis_c resolution isn’t the reason I reach for the Deck over the Switch at times, it’s literally the larger screen size for these aging eyes. I can run many of my favorite games (with hacks) in a 16 by 10 aspect ratio, filling the screen, and for those that are “stuck” in 16:9, the bump in screen size is still a deal maker for me. It’s 0.8” bigger-6.2” versus 7”-and even letterboxed it’s still meaningfully more legible for me. For me this is definitely enough because sure you can't play every switch game but you can play ps2 game cube an Wii no problem at 1080p
The main issues with those is the screen ratio, you have to make choices for emulation 16/9 is king if you don't care about ds and 3ds because those 2 actually benefits of a 20:9 ratio and on a 5~6" display it makes the difference so right now I'm keeping my phone+kishiV1 combo not ready to put money to have a more ergonomic experience for that I have a chipped switch lite with a full 1tb microsd just a shame that the lite didn't came with an oled display
