- 2010 In The Footsteps Of Patton - Stephen Ambrose tour with our host and guide, Kevin Hymel.
The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in France is located on the site of the temporary American St. Laurent Cemetery, established by the U.S. First Army on June 8, 1944 and the first American cemetery on European soil in World War II. The cemetery covers 172.5 acres and contains the graves of 9,387 of our military dead, most of whom lost their lives in the D-Day landings and ensuing operations.
Thank you so much for your very thoughtful post . . . the cemetery/memorial is, indeed, spectacular and emotionally moving. What a majestic setting!
i live in normandy and have gone to this cementery , i have never seen so beautiful cementery and so beautiful garden . a lot of americans here sometimes crying ( they cry their soldiers died ) . very impressive .
My Great Uncle is buried there Julian Strand which would be my Dads uncle he died on during the D - Day. Invasion of German Occupied France.
Many thanks to your Great Uncle and his family for his service and his sacrifice. The Normandy American Cemetery is a beautiful place of honor for his eternal rest.
