- Alien: Covenant is out next week! So this week I took a look at the much maligned by many but also loved by many, Prometheus. Polarizing film for sure. Guess how I feel about it? Here's everything right with Prometheus.
I had intended to put this disclaimer right before the video, but alas I forgot.
Prometheus is rated R.
It's a pretty soft R. Primarily for some scenes of mild gore and blood, violence, and some minimal profanity.
It's all censored, but it's still not for everyone.
For particularly gross or terrible scenes you may not want to relive,

Please do Everything Great About John Carter.
That's a movie that'll be perfect for you to do. Good story, likeable and well developed characters, great performances (especially Kitsch, Colins and Dafoe), stunning visual, great action, really funny moments and a beautiful score from Micheal Giachino.
It's a really great movie that didn't get the right marketing campaign from Disney it needed to attract an audience at the box office.
Granted on an overall production/marketing budget of $350 million it needed to earn $600 million worldwide to be a financial success which I definitely think it could have. Most audiences who watched it at cinemas (including me) loved and were begging for a sequel. It's such a shame we'll never see the epic Barsoom/John Carter Trilogy Andrew Stanton planned.
It is based on the novel which inspired Star Wars, Avatar, Dune and even Superman himself. I highly recommend you read it.
What do you say Cinemawins? Will you do it? I'm sure your fans would love you to. There have been requests. And much like Prometheus, John Carter is criminally underrated that needs recognition to why it's great to begin with.

I saw Prometheus without ever having seen an Alien film solely based upon the music in the trailer. It just grabbed me. Saw the film in IMAX which was stunning and I enjoyed it, though it gave me a few nightmares. Since then, I have watched Alien and I still like Prometheus.

Interesting enough, the sounds in the Prometheus trailer were a direct callback to the sounds of the Original Alien trailer.
Same. Never saw aliens (besides random clips on cable) but saw prometheus. I tried watching aliens since but prometheus is so much more expansive and awe inspiring than some aliens running around.
They are simply completely different types of movies that happen to be in the same universe

When the two characters are running away from the crashing ship, they do change direction. It's even shown in the clip within this review. The ship is rolling as it crashes.
Yup. Originally the win included what you said, and that there was falling debris that kept pulling them back to the center and they were bordered by large rocks all around and a few other small things. But it's already 30 seconds long as is, so I shortened it.

exactly i agree. when people take the "would you survive a world zombie outbreak" test, ithe people who are survive are those who are utterly ruthless, are not distracted by sentimentbut rather make logical decisions, are in all out survival mode. and are very thorough. when you are in survival mode, you surrender your conscience, as the conscience which in civilised society is a very useful tool that keeps your place of privilege in the confines of fthat same society,that'sthe smart thing to do. its the same smart thing that the main protagonist from 'the thing' 1982 did, he flamethrowed or mulatov cocktailed bombed every bit of the thing, and even tied up everyone and tested their blood one by one.to find out who among them is infected. anyone who tried to stop his ruthlessness he shot dead. character was played by a long haired kurt russell. and he really was the smartest horror film character ive ever seen. Rather than screaming at the stupid dumb people, usually high school graduate-university undergraduate age range, and actually being glad when they get killed with a "serves you right for your retarded decisions" shouted at them (even though they are dead and can no longer here you.. Even though even if they weren't dead they wouldn't be able to hear you, as they are inside yourTV)screen-not real.And its the stupid horror movie characters that made me stop watching horror movies. ok, i did end up watching the japanese original The Ring, and i dont think the protagonists do anything particularly stupid. although i wish one of them had run outside away from the tv sets to see what would happen. would the girl monster with the longest fringe ever suddenly jump and appear in front of them again? we will never know.
Vickers is an unsympathetic character, so viewers are not inclined to accept her decisive actions.

i learnt many languages to good proficiency, especially russian as i lived in russia and another russian speaking satallite country. ive read a couple of books a week since i six years old. i had a very traumatic childhood. and i experienced the greatest bereavement as the love of my life died nine years ago.
i have experienced more in my life than the lives of the average twenty people added all together. i am neither young nor old in actual years. but my mind is that of an older person. in the extreme scenario of a zombie apocalypse, you have to throw any known examples out of the window. yes people with families will be protecting them. but people will do anything to protect their families. fear and paranoia would be rampant. families would stay by themselves. because our love and care very rarely extends to people outside our loved ones
charity is a luxury afforded to those who are materially stable enough tp have time and concentration to think abstractly, because altruism is abstract, as it has no direct benefit pn the giver, barring an every so brief gleam of self-pride. in this extreme scenario, there would no law,when there is no law, as seen by psychological tests done in the fifties and sixties, even very normal family people are able to be convinced to really really harm another person.
so its every family for themselves. look at the coronavirus. people are stockpiling supplies, more than they need, out of fear, leaving other people unable to get basic supplies. i couldnt get paracetamol, baby wipes or any cleaning products, or bread in my supermarket. and this coronavirus is nowhere near a zombie apocalypse. so no, what happens when authority, law and order has completely broken down, is every man and every family for themselves. because what we care about is ourselves and those we love, when we are in danger.
that is driven by our evolutionary biology. the reason we act in decent ethical cooperative way normally, is because law and authority are there to compel us to. you steal, you kill oneone, you go to prison. so it is socially advantageous to obey the law, to be a good citizen. and being conscientious, kind, friendly, all of that people mostly do at work,it is to gain greater social status at work, e.g promotion , pay rise.
if we band together in a community it is because it serves our own interest in someway. not out of altruism. in this extreme scenario of total collapse, just like the coronavirus stockpiling of groceries, banding together serves no benefit, rather we are seeing coronavirus stockpiling, leaving many people unable to get basic medicine and household good,s when there was plenty of supply for everyone if people had not stockpiled more than they needed.
so no, a pandemic like this is shown what people what families do-selfish self preservation. and we love our loved ones as ourselves because we have an emotional invested interest in them. the only way people return to being cooperative team working citizens is if authorities reestablish control, and then law is again the tool by which to compel people to cooperate. .

the stockpiling by shoppers is not false. it is a fact documented in every country affected by coronavirus. supermarkets are having to drastically reduce their range of products to meet the extra demand caused by people overbuying-stockpiling supplies out of fear.
even medical staff in my country have begged people to stop over buying because after their four eight hours shifts in the hospital they cant even buy fruit and vegetables as people have completely exhausted their supply.
yes supermarket try to restock, but cannot do so to meet the demand. people come in after supermarkets have tried to refill shelves, and they empty the shelves. i talk about altruism because you are driven by a biased philosophical agenda that people are driven by some kind of socialist goodness or community spirit of working together. that is why i use the word altruism, as altruism is doing good, when there is no benefit to be gained by it. however people rarely do truly altruistic things, but rather act selfishly for their own survival.
it is social darwinism in action and evolutionary darwinism in action. humanity acts according to these two principles-one social one biological. anarchy is happening every family is helping themselves,not each other. what causes society to reestablish order after anarchical breakdown is law and order opposing itself once more; like when the occupy movement happened in britain and america during the credit crunch crisis caused by the irresponsible activities of banking investors.
what caused this anarchical movement to stop? society? no. the police came and dismantled their tents, their camp communities,. and banned them from gathering there again, so the movement dissolved. it is only the police, the armed forces e.c.t that stop anarchy. in every country you mentioned, the armed forces and the police asserted themselves, dissolving anarchical or individualist movements.
this is what you fail to understand, as you have an idealist humanistic fantasy of some inherent goodness in human beings.i know the exact history of all the countries you mentioned, and in each case it was only police and armed forces, imprisonment, punishment or threat of punishment that reinstalled order.
and that is how every society works. fear of imprisonment or torture or execution or fines is the main thing that stops crime. fear of being socially cut off is the secondary reason. as people try to keep in good standing legally so they can remain in good standing in communities and not suffer the shame of being ostracized. this comes from human ego, a wish for honour, for a good reputation. taken to extremes this even results in honour killings in extremely religious places, like muslim and hindu rural villages.
humans are neither good nor bad. but behave according to set biological parameters which are entirely predictable. before ten pm, the supermarkets near where i live have no bread at all, no baby wipes and absolutely no washing up liquid, bleach or any other cleaning products left. so rather than produce twenty types of pasta, produce just a few so food production can be concentrated on bare essentials. this is a documented fact.
and it is your fantasy if you think this is not happening. your fantasy is driven by your biased philosophical agenda, that people are not at all selfish and irresponsible or anarchical and out of control; yes of course societies reestabish themselves, because the rule of order forces it to do so. which is why supermarkets are limiting how many of each item people buy e.c.t. again it is regulations and laws which stop anarchy. anarchy naturally occurs during things like pandemics. and know what is happening in my own supermarkets where i am, as well as my whole country and elsewhere in europe. .
you are wrong in all counts, which is where idealistic philosophical bias leads to, rather than the road of cold facts.

Prometheus is one of my favorite Sci-Fi movies ever. Grand story telling, fantastic cast, Fassbender, great visuals, Fassbender, dark ironic humour, and Fassbender. :) A great way to kick start the Alien prequels.

I feel like including it in the alien universe was a mistake, but I love it for what it was (and tried to be): a heady Sci-fi merging of creationism and evolution.
Just really cool concepts, and I'm even okay with the Jesus-was-one-of-them to an extent.

I saw Prometheus a few months after I'd had a hysterectomy, so I spent the rest of the movie after Shaw's self-performed C-section kind of curled up in horror. The hospital wouldn't even let me *walk* for the first two days, so watching Shaw run around and take hits to the abdomen made me cringe a lot more than any of the graphic deaths.

The biologist is also HIGH when he sees the snake. They were smoking marijuana in the last shot, which is why he's giggling and stumbling around as he approaches the snake.
That scene with the goo on David’s finger is also great because it shows that the goo doesn’t interact with a synthetic form in any way

There's a comic that is excellent, where a synthetic comes in contact with it and actually does become something between machine and man. I think it's "Aliens: Fire and Stone" or something similar
It's nice to hear some other people supporting Prometheus. I absolutely loved this movie, and didn't really understand all the hate it got. I've since read/watched multiple breakdowns that go into the minutia of the move and explain the "plot holes," and it's only made me love it more.

The main problem I have with Prometheus is the lack of an arc of any kind. It seems to just go in random directions and I'm like "Wait, whats happening?" The overall question it attempts to answer is never revealed and its like the movie said "You'll have to see the next one to learn the answer!"
That and nobody other than Shaw was really given a personality or reason to be there. David putters around in the background fucking with things, but we've seen that whole "android who questions its creator"thing a hundred times before. The map guy and the guy who is freaked out one second and then tries to touch the alien wiener snake the next, Captain idris Elba....I can't remember anyone elses name other than Weyland, Shaw and David because no one had enough character or story focus.Compare that to the original Alien, where I can remember every characters name.
But thats none of my business.(Sips tea.)

I just binged the first two Alien movies, then Prometheus and Covenant this week so I'm thrilled you did this video! I had theories about a few of the alleged "plot holes" and am happy you covered so much. I loved this film and the questions it posed, how it trusted its audience with subtlety instead of blatant hand-holding like some modern films fall prey to. Yes, perhaps it could've been a BIT clearer when it DID want people to know something, but as you said, that was never really the intention of the filmmakers. Also couldn't agree more about the Fassbender praise; he crushed it in this role.

*Thank you* for commenting on Idris Elba's character being ex-military; I was waiting for you to mention that. I always hear folks criticizing his character for just "knowing" that. I saw his character was an ex-military pilot right away and was shocked it wasn't so glaringly obvious to everyone else

You clearly don't understand what an atrocity against both humanity and cinema "The Room" is. Batman and Robin and Fan4shit are bad. But they aren't "The Room" bad. I can say with absolute and unwavering conviction that "The Room" has absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
It is literally impossible to win "The Room".
I still want a third one so bad, Covenant I still enjoyed although I know it wasn't as good as the Promethus. Fassbender could win an Oscar for playing David he just needs the right script. Plus he got scary evil at the end of Covenant I really want to see more of that.

The one thing I always thought dragged this movie down was the fact that it was part of the Alien universe. I really wanted Prometheus to be its own thing and just be the next Ridley Scott series, but instead we got a prequel. Not terrible, just a letdown.
Also, Noomi Rapace and Idris Elba were fantastic in this movie.

The fact that the guy who edited the script agreed with you is exactly why Prometheus wasn't as good as it could have been. If they had just kept the things that prevented the plot from having holes and kept it as an actual prequel to Alien, then it would have been an even better movie.
I've been searching for a review like this mankind has been looking for its creators haha. Thank you so much for redirecting the critique of this film. It's good for audiences to take time on a film, let them be true art.
I absolutely love you set your self apart from other similar channels with further commentary and analysis. It makes your videos so much better and uncopiably unique. Because no one is you.
I only watched this movie recently, and we got the blue-ray edition which has some extra stuff that was originally on an app for the movie. Basically a bunch of different clips, like an introduction to Earth and the people on the Prometheus, there was one that was saying happy birthday to David, and even a TEDtalk from Weyland. It was a weird choice to put on an app, but getting it in the blue-ray disk and watching it from there added a bit more depth to the whole movie.
It took me watching Alien Covenant to actually appreciate how good Prometheus was in comparison...
Possible alien Covenant spoilers! I was kinda annoyed that they swept much of anything to do with the Engineers in Covenant. I was hoping for the prequel trilogy to focus solely on the Engineers and then the final film would introduce the actual Xenomorph. What we got was just some average movie where the alien kills almost everyone sigh. Liked the film but it could've been so much better
I watched Prometheus and alien covenant back to back and I can't get enough of the twisted, perfect David. I love how his character is written. David has to be my fav character out of the two movies.
I was so happy to see this video pop up. I really enjoy Prometheus. We bought it when the bluray was released but didn't actually get around to watching it for years. I'd heard a bunch of bad stuff about it by then, but didn't know what to think as I hadn't seen it myself. I think I ended up watching Stuckmann's analysis of it before I even saw the movie. So IDK if I was just more inclined to enjoy it because I'd seen some explanations for the things people didn't like/didn't make sense to them.

thank you cinewins for putting the time and effort into adding warnings for the icky/gorey/straight up rank bits! in the future, you might wanna add something in the beginning clarifying what the warnings are for so people can decide if they really wanna look away or not.
I love this movie. The surgery scene is absolutely amazing. I will never understand the hate this movie got.... It's beautiful, complex, thought provoking, well acted, amazing special effects, sets, music, sound... Love it.

I am a fan of Prometheus for all of the reasons outlined here. In the end it left you dazzled, puzzled and wanting more.
Awesome vid dude: recently re-watched this movie in preparation for Alien Covenant and watching this has gone a long way to changing my opinion of this movie, giving me a new found appreciation for it. Many thanks and keep up the great work.

I think you let pass a little nod to Aliens, whem they are inside the Engineers space craft, and someone screems "Dave, we are leaving", in the same way Hicks says to Drake, during the first time colonial marines face the xenomorphs.

Another kind of nod to Aliens, is David doing his rounds while the Prometheus is enroute to the planet, since in the original script for Aliens, Bishop would have been doing rounds aboard the Sulaco, doing maintenance and making sure the marines were okay in their cryotubes, but these scenes were never shot.

i remember seeing in the cinemasins comment section someone called you a sniveling fanboy or smth, and that you made this channel as ""revenge"". i forgot who said that, but they're missing the point. just like jeremy doesn't hate every movie and is saying they're terrible, you don't love every movie and is saying you love them. he just points out the negative aspects of movies, and you point out the positive. and i honestly love you both for it. as an aspiring artist, its so great to see what people consider good and bad technical aspects, esp from two different people, not to mention that in general i love getting a complete picture of the films

11:50 my big take-away from the alien ship crashing is how strong it is. Humans have never built anything close to that strong. It's like its a kind of grown shell, maybe they have engineered a space mollusk that makes carbon fibre/nanotube shells.
Or they have giant vats filled with organic liquids that they can just grow their ships in molecule by molecule since they are masters of genetic manipulation

I don't think i liked it nearly as much as you did, i felt that there were many plot holes and things that didn't make sense, somewhat bland characters (other than David) and too many things left unexplained (which would have been ok if the premise was executed better). Ultimately the movie is pulled back by a flawed script and lack of clear intentions and answers.
That said, i still found myself having a sense of appreciation for what the movie was trying to do. It tried to do something different from the standard Alien fare and stands out as a wholly unique Sci-Fi film. It presented an interesting new mythology, took risks and tried something different. The fact that the cinematography and score are beautiful helps too, especially in the first half, before things start to go wrong.
I guess what I'm saying is that I admire the movie more so than i like it. If Scott had been more clear about his intentions from the get-go, I'm sure there would've been less divisiveness. I don't emphatise with those who praise it as a masterpiece, nor do i sympathise with those who were disappointed or who outright hate it and say its Phantom Menace-level bad, but i can see where both sides come from.
Ironic that now with Alien Covenant, and many other franchises/movies people are complaining about lack of originality, but when something that's wholly original and takes things into a different direction is released, people hated on it endlessly and demanded it to be more like the originals. Guess there's no pleasing everyone.

Last paragraph is true... but you fell into the trap which the video lambasted.
You can't claim there's plot holes AND NOT LIST ONE. What didn't make sense? Who was bland and why?
An unnamed plot hole is just a confession: "I was really paying attention."
As for the characters, bear in mind the almost-trope way that scifi films which center on a crew force most characters to be relatively one note. This serves three purposes.
1- You can identify primarily with one of them, based on how you would [like to] behave in a situation.
2- You can see the gamut of responses by having different people react differently, rather than running one character through all that development.
3- Finally (and most importantly), the one note crew becomes a foil with which you compare everyone else. Yeah, Shaw and Holloway are obviously very well developed and dynamic, but it's the piss-ant geologist and people pleasing biologist that make you realize the pilot has a ton of depth. The kind of depth you wouldn't notice if you weren't paying attention.
We open on Janek putting up a Christmas tree, and we see his end in a crucifixion pose. We get the impression he's chummy with everyone, but not terribly well respected. Yet he's the only one who breaks through Vicar's cold shell. For real fans, the casting means the second you see him you know he's going to fill Parker's shoes: someone underappreciated who will actually say and do the right things, and end up crucial to saving the protagonist & world.
I was one of the people who enjoyed Prometheus, it definitely has flaws and plot holes, but I was interesting in what it was giving us. With the backlash from the fans who were expecting another Alien, the original plan for where the squeal was going got changed and we got Covenant instead of a further exploration of Shaw, David, and the Engineers. That was a big let down for me.
The killing of Shaw off screen really disappointed me, and it really made the transition between Prometheus and Covenant disjointed. If you don't believe me go watch them one after the other.

I really loved this video! I was about 13 when I first saw Prometheus and I didn't really get it, nor did I know it was connected to the Alien franchise. However, I do remember what I liked most about the film was David. I recently rewatched Prometheus and loved the complexities that were in the film, even though it did leave me confused. But this video really helped me see deeper into the story! I'm about to watch Alien for the first time and really I'd like to give the credit to both you and Prometheus.

For the nostromo being less advanced, i see your point but... i don't think the difference would be that huge with a 400 years gap. That the Prometheus got some tools (let's say scanners etc) that are more precise, maybe. But not a full holo display that doesn't exist anywhere 400 years later. Plus, i think it makes the holograms from the Engineer looks kinda bland since we already saw one in the human ship. Makes it looks like they're not that much advanced, compared to us.
Kalaam Soulstealer Alien takes place 28 years after Prometheus, not 400. I agree with all your points about the futuristic technology though. I much prefer the more lived-in feel of the Nostromo vs the sleek yet bland looking Prometheus.
Kalaam Soulstealer I feel like because of space travel significantly lengthening time between contact of humans it's entirely plausible that technological advancement becomes a lot more piece-meal and slowed so weylands custom science vessel would have better tech than a scrap junker

I think the issue of not knowing why the Engineers decided to kill off the human race is really, amazingly irrelevant, because, ask yourself: Is there a reason they could give that you'd be okay with? Any reason where you would feel," Well, that's justified; exterminate away."? I doubt it. The idea is confronting the notion that you can do whatever you want with a life because you created it, an idea which is reflected in everyone's treatment of David. He clearly resents being made to serve, and we see he ultimately doesn't care about his makers, especially after how they treat him. Holloway is basically a racist towards him the whole time (or whatever the equivalent term would be...he's disrespectful towards David for being an android, as if that's somehow David's fault).

Prometheus was a FANTASTIC movie, as was Covenant. Honestly, all of the negativity seemed to come from people who were incapable of actually thinking for themselves and needed to be spoon-fed every detail in order to understand the story. I cannot wait for the next part of the story!!

I'm a fan of the original series of Alien films but I felt HR. Giger's artistic influence in this film so much more powerfully. Beautifully shot and I do absolutely understand why some people didn't like it, especially fans of the original. But personally I fell in love with the concept and I feel that it not only did the source material justice but surpassed it. It's been confirmed even before covenant was released that this is intended to be an entirely new saga of films and not just a trilogy so I'm entirely confident that eventually, all the answers you want will be there. Great video, I often feel like I'm the only one that actually liked this absolute masterpiece.
This movie seriously is underrated. It's to be honest my favorite in the Alien franchise along the original. Probably because it builds mythology instead of just randomly shooting Xenomorphs the entire movie. What makes this movie REALLY special is the amazing score though. I was so glad when David was playing that melody on the flute in Alien Covenant.

There’s also a subtle character info on Vickers when she burns Holloway. She was just using the flamethrower to keep him away if he tried to come on board, she kept telling him to back up and was pained to actually kill him herself
something that just occured to me, the three men sacrificing themselves for humanity have their arms in the crucifix pose yes, but its important that there is THREE. Jesus and the two criminals!
The movie was very heavily laden with mythology of various strands. Janek flanked by his pilots... Janek also having the christmas tree (technically pagan symbol though) and also speaking of marking the passage of time, as the Janus myth involved. The temple's boobytraps seeming to 'curse' those who approached the altar, a man 'entranced' or 'tempted' by a snake, a impossible conception, born on Xmas day, and also nods to UFO abduction myths and Frankenstein.
You know what? I often watch your videos just to improve a bad day. And the positivity on a movie so heavily trashed was very well appreciated.
I actually didn't like Prometheus enough to ever finish it, but my reasons had more to do with the thing you mentioned at the end, plot retreads. It's squeaky clean presentation I felt made the bare cliches prominent. Whereas a movie like Alien3, one of my favorites, was also a retread but had enough character and baggage to distract.
But I should really finish this movie.
I have experienced (to a lesser extent) that feeling of something dangerous falling down on you. I could have gone left or right, I could have realized it was stupid to just run in a straight line away, but I didn't think of that. I was panicking, as you said, "Away" was all I was thinking of
