Affordable/Starter Bobbin Lace Materials

There are substitutions for bobbin lace:
Pillows - cork board, foam board, and insulation foam
Bobbins - clothes pins, popsicle sticks, and beaded skewers
Pins - plastic/glass head versus stainless steel
Thread - #10 crochet thread and embroidery thread

When you're using the clothespins, do you just open them to get a bit more thread as needed?

When making beaded bobbins would it be a good idea to make 2 of the same color and use as a pair, or does it really matter?

I think that is a great idea! When you are doing cloth stitch, it will show you that your pairs are staying together. Alternately, how far apart your pairs go during half stitch.
