    This is *exactly* the sort of testing that reviewers should do when assessing video editing performance of a system. Nearly every other CZcams reviewer limits themselves to very basic playback tasks and rendering / exporting workflows. The reality is that in many cases >90% of the time video editing is spent on the timeline (trimming/moving clips, adding transitions/effects, adding text etc.) - unless you are heavily into color-grading or motion-graphics. You are generally only exporting videos "a few times a day" - possibly only once every few days if it's just a hobby, so it's the speed and responsiveness of the tasks you perform hundreds of times a day where the difference is felt.
    It's great to see that even with zero optimizations that the M3 Pro is keeping up with multiple 4K video streams. This means there is a lot of room to push it even further with appropriate performance speed ups (see below).
    A few observations from your video that might be interest:
    (1) You were using a UHD timeline in the project, but this is generally not necessary and you can edit everything in 1080p and change it back before final renders/exports. There is no quality lost doing the edit in 1080p because the underlying video is still UHD/4K (with a few exceptions for effects/color-grading/keying which should use the full resolution). The 1080 timeline will put a lot less load on the system and unless you are editing on a massive 8K screen, you will probably not see the difference between a 1080 viewer window or a UHD one given it's normally less than a quarter of the screen real-estate
    (2) I understand that changing the timeline resolution in the project settings is *different* to altering the Playback->Timeline proxy resolution setting. I think the difference is the stage at which the resolution of playback is altered - i.e. only for monitoring, or before other processing. This can change the impact on performance, and has some gotchas when doing text or effects work to prevent you using low-resolution inputs instead of your high-resolution source material.
    (3) I also noticed that in your project settings, the proxy media output was set to ProRes 422 HQ at the same resolution as your timeline - which is the highest quality (non-RAW) version of ProRes, and generates very large files that are unnecessary for a proxy workflow. The default should really be ProRes Proxy 1080p on a Mac, which are a lot more manageable and generally smaller than your H.264 media, with the benefit of playing back more easily when the machine is under load.
    (4) Resolve now has a separate application on macOS called "Blackmagic Proxy Generator" which means you can generate your proxies outside of Resolve, which is a huge timesaver because it no longer locks-up the Resolve UI while it generates proxies. The advantage of the new Apple Silicon Macs is that the generation of H.264,H.265 or ProRes proxies is hardware accelerated, and I've found it to be a 3-5x real time for UHD H.264 files on an M1 Max Mac (e.g. a proxy for a 10 minute clip will take 2-3 minutes to generate)
    In practice I don't notice the difference between H.264 UHD/4K files and proxies on my M1 Max Mac, but I can see that disk I/O (and a little bit of CPU/GPU load) is a lot greater when using the original source media. For 2-3 streams with minimal effects you probably won't notice, but I expect it would become noticeable the more complex the timeline becomes.

      Thank you for your lovely comments and tips. I recently changed my timeline to 1080p since I realised UHD wasn't necessary. I'll definitely give your other suggestions a try, thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge!

    I bought my first, completely new MacBook a year ago, and since then not a day has gone by when I am not surprised by how powerful it is. It is only the 13" MBP with M2, but 24 GB and 1 TB of storage. I have used many different computers and operating systems over the last two, nearly three decades, and yet I have rarely had as much fun working on them as I have on this MBP. Mine is already a beast, so yours must come straight from hell. ;) I hope you have lots of fun and enjoyment with your new tool.

      Your experience seems to be based more on the CPU taking all the load instead of a GPU. The M3 Pro is impressive as far as integrated graphics but it's not a beast, even in Apple world. The beast is AMD and NVIDIA.

Once again people can say what ever they like about apple/macs etc. But you struggled to edit with a desktop gaming pc, while we edit 4k on a tablet. No fans, no noise , no case ..nada. Great video simple, direct , the way it should be. Peace ✌🏻

    Great and practical demonstration. Recently switched to Mac from PC as well. I’ll only do light video editing, but got the same laptop cuz I figured why not. Yeah…never going back to PC again. I can do normal stuff (email/word processing/multiple apps running) and it never even gets warm to the touch. The endless battery life and seamless sync between phone and iPad are the icing on the cake. Really is an astonishingly well made laptop.

    I used Fusion on a 2007 MacBook when performing consulting work. Companies usually used all MS products & were always amazed when I’d present via split screen running Windows & Apple OS simultaneously. It ran flawlessly & actually ran Windows more efficiently. So my guess is that it should run even better today on a MacBook Pro M3 Pro.

    Hey Sam, i built my current desktop 3 years ago to edit 4K video without using proxies, and it does it well, i use PP and as everyone know, PP crashes a lot and i dont blame the computer for that. We have a youtube channel with 60 k subs and are starting to get serious about making YT a thing, and now my wife does most of our vlog editing. I am looking at getting a laptop to edit while my wife works on the desktop, just trying to be productive while she works, i could do shorts or work on after effects, will the MacBook do it, that is the question. • @SamCambetis
      @SamCambetis  Před 3 měsíci

      Hey Larry, I haven't used After Effects but it's probably similar to fusion, but from what I've read online, it can be demanding. The MacBook Pro I have should handle most tasks really well I would think. But if you're doing more intensive projects upgrading to 32GB RAM would improve performance. You might want to chat with people who use After Effects regularly since they'll have better insights. Sorry, if that's not really much help!

      You dont buy Macs for those types of applications. 3D applications rely heavily on GPU and dedicated memory. Apples silicon shares it memory and although it's super fast and efficient, it's not on the level of a GPU with dedicated memory.

      @ZhuJo99 Před 3 měsíci

      No. If your software doesn't run natively on macOs (which most of architecture sw does not) than there is no benefit getting a Macbook. Saying that as Mac user since 1994 who rarely touches Windows.

    • @captureinsidethesound
      @captureinsidethesound Před 3 měsíci

      @@ZhuJo99 , that depends on the 3D application, simple CAD type modeling or organic type sculpting? Regardless, iOS has multiple professional 3D applications for this. I use Nomad Sculpt even for CAD type modeling.
      iOS even has a two Ray Tracing/Path Tracing applications for photorealistic rendering, Armor Paint and OctaneX. Although, they are not heavily marketed and receive negativity from amateurs, they do the job well. Especially, with the M1 or higher iPads.
      There are also browser based applications on the horizon that are optimized for the iPads M-Series and powerful Android tablets using advanced WebGL and WebGPU features. Actually, they are for any mobile silicon with console level GPU performance, including Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or higher.

    If you are a video editor and you don't need portability please buy yourself a PC
    Macbook have too little ram and storage and cost of upgrading is HUGE
    You don't wanna edit ssds hanging to your PC, move files around, relocate projects.
    If you are 3D or motion graphics designer then MacBook will be half as powerful while costing double.
    GET A PC, ADD unlimited storage upgrade at a cheap price , these days full size motherboards come with 3 nvme slots and lots of sata drives,
    All this at the cost of a BASE MACBOOK.
    YOU CAN"T REPAIR MACBOOK and ONLY 1 Year warranty.
    PC parts have 3-5 Years warranty and if one component stops working- change it don't have to buy a new PC.
    APPLE IS A SCAM.
